”Brat Wei, the old man won’t say too much.”

Yao Lao straightened his posture, his expression turning solemn. ”Thanks to you, not only has the old man successfully revived, but I’ve also managed to step into the Dou Sheng realm. With this strength, I can barely say I have some standing on this continent.”

”At the very least, I finally have the confidence to speak to you face-to-face. So, this old man will shamelessly ask you—are you willing to become my disciple?”

”If you do, I won’t promise you wealth or power, but this I can guarantee—whoever dares to touch you in the future will have to step over my corpse first!”

”You, are you willing?”

As he spoke, Yao Lao’s face couldn’t help but show a trace of nervousness. His eyes, however, were full of hope as he looked at Wei Yang, even his breathing slowing unconsciously.

Xiao Yan also widened his eyes, looking at Wei Yang expectantly. After owing so many debts and not knowing how to pay them back, what could he do? The only way out—drag Wei Yang into the water with him.

If Wei Yang officially became his senior brother, and considering their hometown connection and now being future in-laws, with so many ties intertwined, he didn’t believe Wei Yang would still have the heart to demand repayment.

After all, between family, can that really be called a debt?

It’s called mutual help!

Under the tense gazes of Yao Lao and Xiao Yan, Wei Yang’s expression turned serious. He slowly stood, straightened his robe, then dropped to both knees, bowing deeply as he respectfully called out, ”Disciple Wei Yang, greets the master!”

Since things had already been said this far, Wei Yang naturally couldn’t bear to refuse. Besides, taking a Dou Sheng as his master wasn’t exactly shameful. In fact, in name, he was already considered Yao Chen’s student.

Most importantly, Wei Yang genuinely respected Yao Lao’s character and principles. This was a man who truly treated his disciples with all his heart.

”Good!” Xiao Yan clapped his hands in excitement, shouting aloud.

”Good, good, good! Excellent!” Yao Lao’s old eyes glistened with emotion as he hurriedly stood and grasped Wei Yang’s arms.

”Up, up, good child, quickly rise.”

Yao Lao’s lips trembled slightly as he helped Wei Yang to his feet, murmuring, ”This old man, now has no regrets left in this life~”

The knot that had burdened his heart for so long was finally untied today.

Xiao Yan, standing at the side, couldn’t help but smile brightly at the sight, feeling genuine happiness for the two of them. As for that earlier joke about canceling debts, that was just for laughs.

The real reason was that he could finally see Yao Lao and Wei Yang breaking through that invisible wall between them. This master-disciple bond was now fully established—not just in name, but in truth.

Yao Lao had always regretted not being able to take Wei Yang as his disciple, and as his disciple, how could Xiao Yan not know? Yet, there was nothing he could do but worry from the sidelines.

After all, such matters weren’t something he could easily meddle in. Interfering with good intentions might have made things worse. Now, the two people involved had finally resolved everything perfectly.

Xiao Yan couldn’t help but exhale deeply, a lingering sense of guilt in his heart finally lifting. All this time, he’d faintly felt that because of his existence, there had been an awkward tension between Yao Lao and Wei Yang regarding that disciple title.

If not for him, Yao Lao would surely have chosen Wei Yang as his personal disciple back then. If that had happened, perhaps Yao Lao wouldn’t have had to endure so much hardship and suffering over the years.

That thought had always weighed on Xiao Yan’s mind. But now, everything was finally as it should be!

”Mn, Xiao Yan, from now on, you’re the junior brother, and Wei Yang will be the senior. What do you think?” Yao Lao said excitedly, pulling Wei Yang along as he looked to Xiao Yan.

”No problem, I’m fine being the junior,” Xiao Yan grinned broadly, then bowed respectfully toward Wei Yang. ”Xiao Yan greets Senior Brother!”

His attitude was sincere. He didn’t dare dream of being the senior—he’d probably get beaten for that. Besides, being the junior had its own perks.

Wei Yang quickly reached out to help him up, smiling. ”No need for formality, Junior Brother.”

The three of them exchanged glances and soon couldn’t help but burst into hearty laughter.

”Hahahahaha~”

Their joyful laughter echoed through the secret chamber, lingering for a long time.

Outside.

As the heaven and earth energy anomaly gradually faded, countless people were left dumbfounded by the sudden change.

”What’s going on?”

”Why did the energy fluctuations suddenly disappear?”

”Could it be... Yao Chen failed his breakthrough to Dou Sheng?!”

As soon as those words were spoken, countless people were instantly thrown into an uproar.

Failed to break through to Dou Sheng?!

Although it sounded unbelievable, given the current scene—the sudden disappearance of the heavens-and-earth energy—this was the only explanation that even remotely made sense.

As for succeeding?

That was simply impossible!

Even breaking through to a mere Dou Huang, with full preparation, would take at least ten days to half a month. Let alone breaking through to a Dou Sheng?

From the moment Yao Chen began his breakthrough until now, it hadn’t even been ten full days. How could he possibly have succeeded?

The amount of energy required to step into the Dou Sheng realm was astronomical. To succeed in less than ten days?

Even if the heavens themselves poured energy directly down his throat, it couldn’t be that fast. After all, no matter how much energy you have, you still need to digest and absorb it bit by bit. That process takes time.

So, the only logical explanation now—was that this breakthrough had failed!

After coming to that conclusion, countless people couldn’t help but erupt in commotion again. Soon after, their gazes turned complicated. Some sighed in pity, some looked regretful, some smirked in schadenfreude, while others quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

A full spectrum of human emotions played out.

On top of the Inner City walls, the figures of the Three Leaders appeared.

Staring into the distance at the Wei Mansion, where those countless streams of energy had gradually faded into nothingness, the three of them felt an indescribable heaviness in their hearts. For a moment, they didn’t even know how to feel.

After a long silence—

”Failed, huh?” Xuan Yi murmured softly, eyes closing slightly.

”As expected, stepping into the Dou Sheng realm isn’t that easy.” Xuan Kongzi sighed.

”Yao Chen was a bit too impatient. He took too big of a step all at once. He hadn’t even reached the Ban Sheng stage yet and still tried to directly ascend to Dou Sheng.

The gap in required energy alone was massive, not to mention skipping over the entire Ban Sheng stage—from Nine-Change straight to Dou Sheng—it’s practically impossible.” Tian Leizi said calmly, his expression unreadable.

Xuan Kongzi and Xuan Yi both fell silent.

Indeed, under normal circumstances, one should first advance from Nine-Star to Ban Sheng before stepping into Dou Sheng.

Throughout history, there had been a few who managed to skip the Ban Sheng stage entirely and directly ascend to Dou Sheng, but every single one of them had encountered some heaven-defying stroke of fortune.

For example, consuming some divine treasure of heaven and earth—like a Bodhisattva Heart. Or possessing extraordinary bloodline blessings. But whether it was bloodline fortune or rare treasures like the Bodhisattva Heart, such things only existed in ancient records.

Even the comparatively ”common” Bodhi Heart was something that appeared maybe once in a thousand years. As for bloodline blessings—that was even harder. It required a direct blood relative to have ascended to Dou Di.

Of course, aside from these two methods, there were still other ways. But all of them were extremely harsh. So, Yao Chen’s failure this time wasn’t strange at all. If he had somehow succeeded, that would have been the truly unbelievable thing.

Watching as the energy fluctuations in the sky finally faded away into calm—

”Should we go visit that old Yao Chen?” Tian Leizi asked.

”No need. At a time like this, I doubt anyone in the Wei Mansion would want to see us,” Xuan Kongzi shook his head, then added, ”Regardless, the fact that Yao Chen was able to resurrect at all is already a good thing. Even if he failed this breakthrough, I believe he’ll still have another chance to reach Ban Sheng in the future. Let’s wait a few days, then pay a visit.”

That last line was directed at Xuan Yi. Xuan Yi nodded slightly without saying a word, then turned and left.

”Let’s go back too,” Xuan Kongzi said with a sigh as he watched her departing figure.

Tian Lei Zi nodded.

On a personal level, they couldn’t help but feel regret for Yao Chen’s failure. But for most people, this outcome was actually a good thing. The Hall of Souls wouldn’t need to send more people, and the Pill Tower wouldn’t be placed in a difficult position.

Within Holy Pill City, life could continue as usual.
