Chapter 274: Chapter 273: Return of the Anomaly

--- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - The Kenway Mansion---

The master bedroom of the Kenway Mansion was silent, save for the rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. The sun had just risen, casting a warm, golden glow through the heavy velvet curtains.

The room was opulent, a blend of Colonial practicality and European luxury that Alaric had designed himself the moment this mansion was built. A massive four-poster bed dominated the center, draped in silk sheets.

Suddenly, the air in the center of the room twisted.

FLASH.

A brilliant golden light erupted, silent but blinding. It swirled for a fraction of a second before coalescing into a solid form.

A man appeared. He was 6’4”, with platinum blonde hair that fell just past his ears and piercing blue eyes that held the weight of power. He wore a crimson coat that looked slightly travel-worn.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway blinked, his senses expanding instantly to check for threats.

There were none. Only the familiar scent of lavender and old wood.

”I’m back,” Alaric whispered, his voice raspy from disuse.

He looked around the room. The paintings on the walls. The rug Penn had bought from an auction in Boston. The small crib in the corner that was now empty.

Emotions swarmed him... relief, nostalgia, a deep, aching love that he had suppressed for twelve months. Although he knew, intellectually, that only six days had passed in this world due to the time dilation, his soul felt the weight of the year he had spent in the Elemental Nations.

He walked to the balcony doors and pushed them open.

The cool morning air of Pennsylvania hit him. It tasted different than the air of Konoha. Cleaner, perhaps, but less vibrant with chakra.

Alaric walked to the edge of the stone railing and looked out.

Philadelphia stretched before him.

It wasn’t the city he remembered from his previous life in the 21st century, nor was it the small settlement he had arrived in. It was his city.

The Celestial Mall dominated the skyline to the east... a massive structure of glass and steel that defied the architectural limits of the era, built with his Wood Release and protected by his seals. To the west, William Penn’s Palace rose like a beacon of governance, its white stone gleaming in the sun.

The streets were busy. Carriages rattled over cobblestones. Merchants set up stalls. Smoke rose from chimneys.

It was alive. It was thriving.

”Only a few days,” Alaric muttered, leaning on the railing. ”And yet, look at those new foundations near the river. Penn must have approved the expansion while the family took the contract.”

He chuckled softly. ’Heh... they didn’t waste a second.’

He took a moment, letting the normalcy wash over him. No Tailed Beasts. No Akatsuki. No hidden villages plotting war. Just commerce, politics, and family.

He turned back into the room, his boots clicking on the hardwood floor. He checked his reflection in the mirror... he looked the same, perhaps a bit sharper around the eyes. He adjusted his collar, smoothing out the crimson fabric.

”Time to say hello.”

Alaric walked to the door and opened it. The hallway was quiet, lined with portraits of his and his family’s portraits.

At the end end of the hallway, he descended the grand staircase, the sounds of life growing louder as he approached the dining hall.

The smell of coffee... rich, dark, and expensive... wafted through the air.

He reached the double doors of the dining room and pushed them open.

The scene before him was one of domestic perfection.

Leonard, with a newspaper on his hand, and Bernard Kenway were sitting at the head of the table, sipping coffee from delicate porcelain cups, discussing shipment manifests.

Eleanor, Alaric’s mother, was seated next to them, drinking tea and reading a letter, a content smile on her face.

Linette, ever the efficient manager, was standing by the sideboard, holding a stack of papers and speaking in low, rapid tones to Caroline, who was nodding while feeding her daughter, Jennifer, a spoonful of porridge. Edward Kenway, looking tired but happy, was making funny faces at his daughter, trying to get her to laugh.

And at the far end of the table...

Kassandra.

The Eagle Bearer. The Misthios. His lover.

She was wearing a simple morning gown that did nothing to hide her warrior’s physique. Her hair was loose, cascading down her back in dark waves. She was eating her breakfast... a plate of eggs and fruit... with one hand.

In her other arm, she held a bundle.

Hunter Kenway.

Their son was awake, his light blue eyes... so like his father’s... staring up at his mother with fascination. He cooed, reaching for a lock of her hair.

Alaric stopped in the doorway. The sight hit him harder than any jutsu.

He cleared his throat.

”Hey everyone!”

The room went silent.

Every head turned. Spoons froze mid-air. Papers were lowered.

For a second, there was only shock.

Then, chaos.

”Mate!” Edward jumped up, nearly knocking over his chair. ”You’re back! Bloody hell, that was fast!”

”’Laric!” Linette dropped her papers.

”Son!” Eleanor beamed, setting her tea down.

”Welcome back, son,” Leonard grunted, though his smile was wide. ”We didn’t expect you for another week.”

Alaric grinned, stepping into the room. He accepted the hugs, the handshakes, the pats on the back. He laughed at Edward’s jokes and promised Linette he would look at the budget later.

”Kassandra told us you went to the unexplored territories,” Bernard said, pouring another cup of coffee. ”Find anything interesting?”

”You could say that,” Alaric winked. ”A few... exotic animals. Some interesting local customs.”

He gently extricated himself from the family and turned toward the end of the table.

Kassandra hadn’t moved. She sat there, watching him with a calm, knowing smile. She knew. She could feel the shift in his aura, the subtle weight of the time he had lived that they hadn’t.

Alaric walked toward her. His heart beat a little faster.

”Hey...” Alaric’s smile softened, becoming intimate and tender.

”Hey,” Kassandra replied, her voice like honey. She shifted Hunter in her arms, turning the baby to face him. ”Your son misses you. He was just asking where his loud father went.”

”Yeah,” Alaric finally reached them. He sat down in the chair next to her. He reached out, letting Hunter grab his finger. The baby’s grip was strong.

”I miss both of you...” Alaric whispered, leaning in to kiss Kassandra on the forehead. ”You don’t know how much time I spent there. It felt like... a lifetime.”

The head chef bustled out of the kitchen, carrying a fresh pot of coffee. He froze when he saw Alaric. ”Master Alaric! You’re returned! I shall prepare your breakfast immediately! Steak and eggs?”

”Please,” Alaric nodded gratefully. ”And keep the coffee coming.”

As the chef retreated, Kassandra took a bite of a strawberry. She looked at Alaric, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and warmth.

”Let us eat first,” she said, resting her head on his shoulder for a brief moment. ”Then... you will tell me everything. Every monster you fought... or every world you’ve saved.”

Alaric looked at his son, then at his wife, then at his family filling the room with laughter and noise.

”Yeah,” Alaric said, relaxing into the chair. ”I have some stories.”
