Chapter 254: Chapter 253: Quiet Debts

---

The invasion had started a little over an hour ago. Now it was over.

Alaric walked alone down the main street that led from the Chūnin Exam arena toward the center of the village. The sun was still high, but the light felt tired, like it had seen too much in one day.

Broken roof tiles lay scattered on the ground. A few shop signs hung crooked. One food stall had lost its front wall, and noodles were still steaming in a pot that no one had turned off yet. But people were already moving again. Chunin shouted orders. Civilians hugged family members they had found in the shelters. Children ran past Alaric, chasing a loose dog that had gotten scared during the fighting.

”Sector seven clear!” someone called from a rooftop.

”No major fires left in the market district!” another voice answered.

Alaric listened as he walked. The news was good. A few buildings damaged. Some shinobi hurt. But no streets full of bodies. No crying parents looking for children who would never come home.

The Sandaime had acted fast. The elite jonin had moved faster. And Shikaku Nara had planned it all from the shadows. He shifted units like pieces on a board and kept the worst of the attack away from the places where normal people lived.

Alaric had done his part on the roof. People would talk about that later. For now, he just kept walking.

He passed a group of academy students helping an old woman carry her things back into her house. One of them... Konohamaru, the Hokage’s grandson... looked up and saw Alaric. The boy’s eyes went wide from the humongous crimson coated man, but Alaric only nodded once and kept going.

A thin trail of smoke still rose from the forest beyond the walls. That was where Naruto and the others were handling the rest. Alaric didn’t need to be there.

He stopped for a moment, closed his eyes, and reached out with his senses.

Haku’s chakra signature glowed steady and calm inside the hospital building three streets away.

Alaric opened his eyes, turned left, and headed that way.

---

The hospital courtyard was busy, but not panicked.

Stretchers lined the walkway. Medic-nin in white armbands ran between patients. Some carried trays of bandages. Others pushed carts with bottles of medicine. A few civilian volunteers handed out water.

Inside the main doors, the noise was louder. People called for help. Someone was crying quietly in a corner. A chunin with a bandaged arm sat against the wall, staring at nothing.

A senior medic stood on a chair near the entrance and shouted over the crowd.

”We’re short on trained medical ninjutsu users! If anyone here knows even basic healing techniques, please come forward and help!”

Alaric didn’t raise his hand or announce himself. He simply walked deeper into the room and looked for the people who needed help most.

He found the first one quickly: a young chunin lying on a mat, blood soaking through the cloth pressed to his side. A medic was trying to stop the bleeding, but her hands were shaking from tiredness.

Alaric knelt beside them.

”Move over a little,” he said quietly.

The medic looked up, surprised, but she made room.

Alaric placed two fingers on the chunin’s chest, just above the wound. He didn’t glow green like normal medical ninjutsu. There was only a faint golden pulse that lasted half a second.

The bleeding stopped. The torn muscle inside closed. The skin sealed itself without a scar.

The chunin took a deep breath and opened his eyes.

”It... doesn’t hurt anymore,” he whispered.

Alaric was already standing. ”Rest,” he told the medic. ”He’ll be fine.”

He moved to the next patient.

A civilian man with a broken arm and burns on his face. Fixed in ten seconds.

An older woman whose heart had started racing from fear. Calmed and steady again.

A genin girl with deep cuts across her back. Skin whole, cuts gone.

He didn’t rush. He didn’t speak much. He just went from person to person, touching a shoulder here, a forehead there. Wherever he stopped, pain ended.

Some patients fell asleep right away. Others looked around in confusion, then relief.

Sakura ran past with a tray of supplies. She did a double-take when she saw Alaric, but he was already moving on.

Shikamaru leaned against a wall, arms full of blankets. He watched Alaric for a long minute, then gave a small nod. Alaric nodded back.

Thirty minutes passed like that.

Slowly, the loudest cries quieted. The most serious cases stabilized. Medics found time to breathe.

A man in a clean white coat walked up to Alaric. He looked about fifty, with gray hair and tired eyes. A small name tag read: Director – Konoha General Hospital.

”Excuse me,” the man said. He bowed deeply. ”I’m the hospital director. I’ve been watching you work.”

Alaric wiped his hands on a towel someone had handed him.

The director continued. ”I don’t know exactly what you’re doing... and I won’t ask... but you just saved a lot of lives today. We were looking at losing at least twenty critical patients before you arrived. Now... we might not lose any.”

He bowed again. ”Thank you. Truly.”

Alaric shrugged. ”Glad I could help. Village took a hit. Least I could do.”

The director smiled, small and tired. ”If there’s ever anything this hospital can do for you, just say the word.”

Alaric gave a short nod. ”I’ll keep that in mind.”

He turned and headed for the stairs.

---

Third floor. Room 319.

He slid the door open without knocking.

Haku sat on the edge of the bed, wrapped head to toe in white bandages like a bad costume. Only his brown eyes and a bit of hair showed.

Alaric leaned against the doorframe and raised one eyebrow.

”Really?” he asked.

Haku sighed. ”The medics insisted. They saw blood on my clothes and wouldn’t listen when I said I was fine.”

He started unwrapping the bandages from his arms. Underneath, his skin was smooth and unmarked.

”I healed ten minutes after the fight,” Haku said. ”But explaining the Ashura seal to five different nurses sounded tiring.”

Alaric shook his head, a small smile on his face. ”Lazy.”

Haku finished removing the bandages and stood up. ”Where to now?”

”One more stop,” Alaric said. ”Come on.”

They walked down the quiet hallway to Room 308.

Inside, the blinds were half-closed. The light was soft and gray.

Rock Lee lay still in the bed. Heavy casts covered both legs. His face was pale. Machines beeped slowly beside him.

Sitting beside him on a small stool was Might Guy. The usually exuberant Jonin was slumped forward, his face buried in his hands. The Green Beast looked small, defeated by a reality he couldn’t kick his way out of.

”Ahem.”

Alaric cleared his throat from the doorway.

”Alaric-san! Haku-kun!” Guy stood up, striking a half-hearted pose. ”The... the Power of Youth is resting right now! What brings you to this humble abode?”

Alaric stepped inside. Haku closed the door behind them.

”Cut the act, Guy,” Alaric said softly, walking into the room. Haku followed, closing the door behind them. ”I told you last night. I’d pay a visit.”

Guy’s face changed. Hope flickered there, but he tried to hide it.

Guy’s smile faltered. He looked at Lee, then back at Alaric. ”The medics... they said the surgery is 50/50. And even if it succeeds, he might never be a ninja again. His spine... bone fragments...”

Guy’s voice cracked. He clenched his fists. ”He worked harder than anyone. It’s not fair.”

Alaric walked to the bed and looked down at Lee.

”Fairness is a fairy tale,” Alaric stated, standing over Lee. ”But lucky for you, I don’t believe in fairy tales. I believe in equivalent exchange.”

Alaric looked at the sleeping boy, scanning and analyzing him briefly before nodding his head a little. ’If I guess it right... Spinal compression fractures. Muscle avulsion. Nerve damage. Nasty. But fixable.’

”Guy,” Alaric held out his hand. ”Get me a glass of water.”

”Water?” Guy blinked, confused. ”Are you thirsty?”

”Just get it,” Alaric ordered gently.

Guy nodded quickly. He went to the small sink in the corner, filled a plain glass, and brought it back.

”Hold it steady,” Alaric told him.

Guy held the glass with both hands.

Alaric brought his right hand up. He focused a tiny amount of chakra to the tip of his index finger and pressed it against his thumb. A small cut opened. One bright red drop of blood formed.

Alaric held his thumb over the glass.

Drip.

It hit the water and spread slowly, turning the clear liquid a soft, warm pink. A faint light glowed inside the glass for a few seconds.

Guy stared. ”What... is that?”

”My blood,” Alaric said. He wiped his thumb. The cut closed instantly. ”It heals things. Even things medical ninjutsu can’t always fix.”

Guy looked at him like he wasn’t sure this was real.

”Relax, Guy-san,” Haku said, his voice calm and assured. ”Sensei defied the laws of physics to make me faster than sound in a month. Fixing a few bones is... mundane for him.”

Guy looked at Haku’s perfect skin. He looked at the glowing water. He looked at Lee.

He took a deep breath.

”Okay.”

He sat on the edge of the bed and gently lifted Lee’s head.

Guy gently lifted Lee’s head. ”Lee... drink this. It’s... it’s a special medicine from a friend.”

He tipped the glass. Lee, half-awake, swallowed the liquid instinctively.

The pink water went down.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then, a soft, golden light began to emanate from Lee’s chest. It spread down his spine, into his legs, wrapping his broken body in a warm cocoon.

CRACK. SNAP.

The sounds of bones resetting echoed in the quiet room. It wasn’t the sickening crunch of injury, but the satisfying pop of alignment.

Lee’s breathing deepened. The pained expression on his face smoothed out. The color returned to his cheeks.

Ten seconds later, the glow faded.

Lee blinked. He looked around the room. Then he sat up... slowly at first, then faster.

”Guy-sensei?” he asked. His voice was clear.

”Lee!” Guy’s eyes filled with tears.

Lee pushed the blanket off. He bent his knees. He wiggled his feet.

”No pain,” he whispered.

Then louder. ”No pain at all!”

He kicked one leg out. The plaster cast cracked and fell away in pieces.

He kicked the other. Same thing.

Lee jumped out of bed and landed on both feet. Perfect balance. No wobble.

”I feel amazing!” he shouted. Tears ran down his face. ”Guy-sensei, I can move! I can run again!”

Guy dropped the empty glass on the table and grabbed Lee in a huge hug.

”LEE!”

”GUY-SENSEI!”

They held each other tight and cried loud enough for the whole floor to hear.

”It’s a miracle!” Guy wept. ”A miracle of YOUTH! Alaric-san! How can I ever repay—”

Guy turned around, ready to bow, to pledge his life, to do anything.

The spot where Alaric and Haku had been standing was empty. The door was slightly ajar.

There was no note. No demand for payment. Just the lingering scent of cigar smoke and the echo of a job well done.

---

The hallway outside was quiet. Their footsteps echoed softly as they walked toward the exit.

Haku glanced at his teacher. ”You didn’t want to stay for the thanks?”

Alaric lit a fresh cigar and took a slow drag.

”Debt’s paid,” he said. ”That’s enough.”

They stepped out into the late afternoon sunlight. Konoha was still standing. People were still moving forward.

And somewhere behind them, two green-clad shinobi were laughing and crying at the same time.

Alaric smiled faintly around the cigar.

Not a bad day’s work.
