Chapter 272: Chapter 271: The Hollow Circle

---A Cavern somewhere---

The cavern was an abyss of silence and stone, buried so deep beneath the surface that not even the hum of the earth’s crust could penetrate it. The air was cold, stale, and smelled of damp rock and centuries of forgotten malice.

At the center of this void stood the Gedo Mazo. The demonic statue dominated the space, its nine closed eyes staring blindly into the darkness, its wooden hands raised in a frozen plea or threat.

Far across the continent, in hidden lairs, behind waterfalls, and within shadowed ruins, the remaining members of the Akatsuki felt the familiar tug at their chakra. It was a summons that could not be ignored.

One by one, they formed the seal.

Magic Lantern Body Technique.

Pain’s chakra reached out like an invisible spiderweb, gathering their consciousnesses from across the nations and pouring them into the hollow space of the hideout.

Projections flickered into existence. They were ghostly silhouettes, wrapped in shifting prisms of rainbow light, their bodies translucent and their voices warped by distance and chakra interference.

Pain stood at the apex of the circle, on the right thumb of the statue. His Rinnegan gleamed with cold, unyielding clarity, the only source of stability in the shifting room.

”Kakuzu’s ring has gone dark,” Pain announced. His voice was flat, devoid of emotion, yet it carried the weight of a judge delivering a verdict. ”No signal remains. No trace of chakra. Status.”

The quiet stretched, heavy and expectant.

On the left thumb, Kisame Hoshigaki’s projection materialized with a lazy tilt of his head. Even in this spectral form, the bandages of Samehada were visible, slung over his shoulder. He grinned, revealing rows of shark-like teeth.

”Heh... so the old skinflint finally spent his last heart,” Kisame chuckled, the sound distorted like grinding stones. ”I figured those extra lives would keep him ticking longer than any of us. Greed must’ve finally collected its due.”

Next to him, Deidara leaned forward, his single visible eye wide with manic energy. A tiny clay bird balanced on his finger, twitching as if alive.

”Art is fleeting, yeah!” Deidara scoffed. ”But going out without even a decent explosion? That’s just pathetic, un. The guy was supposed to be the wallet... now who’s paying for my next batch of C3 clay? I need high-grade materials!”

From the shadows of the ring finger, Itachi Uchiha’s form emerged. He stood perfectly still, his cloak motionless. His crimson Sharingan regarded the circle without warmth, without judgment... only quiet calculation. He said nothing, merely filing the information away.

On the pinky finger, Konan’s paper wings stirred with the faintest rustle, like dry autumn leaves.

”This weakens us more than we can afford right now,” she murmured, her voice soft but piercing. ”Kakuzu handled the finances, the bounties, the black market procurement. His network of underground exchange stations was extensive. It will take months to rebuild that infrastructure. And the ring... we must recover it. We cannot recruit a replacement without it.”

Pain gave the smallest nod. ”The cause is unknown. There was no distress signal. No final report. Either he got careless and was overwhelmed... or he chose betrayal and severed the connection. Neither can be tolerated.”

The weight of every gaze shifted toward the final projection, standing on the index finger.

Hidan stood slouched, his triple-bladed scythe propped carelessly against one shoulder. His chest was bare, revealing the Jashin amulet around his neck. His crimson eyes flashed with an irritation that bordered on glee.

He exploded before anyone could speak.

”Oi! What the hell are all of you looking at me like that for?!” Hidan shouted, waving a hand. ”That greedy, penny-pinching fossil ditched me two days into the damn hunt! Said my ’stupid Jashin prayers’ were wasting his precious time! I told him... go ahead, run off by yourself, see if I care! He wanted the whole twenty million for his greedy ass! His problem, his grave!”

Deidara let out a short, mocking laugh. ”Classic Kakuzu. Always chasing the next coin purse. Looks like someone finally cashed him in.”

Hidan jabbed a finger forward, his voice rising in pitch. ”Hey! The partner rule only works when the damn partner doesn’t bolt like a dog after a bone! Jashin-sama doesn’t babysit misers! If anything, this is karma biting him in his five ugly asses!”

Pain’s voice sliced through the outburst, calm and merciless.

”The rule is absolute. Partners exist to cover each other’s weaknesses. Your immortality was meant to shield him from sudden, overwhelming destruction. You failed to enforce the protocol. Kakuzu is dead. The organization has suffered a loss.”

Konan’s tone followed, quiet but edged with steel. ”Hidan. You will find the body. You will retrieve the ring. You will determine what... or who... ended him. You will do this alone. Consider it penance for your lack of control.”

Hidan barked a laugh... sharp, wild, almost delighted.

”Tch! Fine! I’ll track down whoever turned that cheapskate into a corpse and offer ’em up to Jashin-sama piece by bloody piece! But if it’s some punk who got lucky...”

His grin stretched wider, eyes gleaming with sadistic promise.

”...I’m gonna make it last days. Weeks, maybe. I’ll make them wish they died with him.”

Pain’s Rinnegan swept the circle one final time.

”The loss is recorded. We adapt. Bounties will be rerouted through other channels. Missions proceed without pause. Retrieve the ring. Eliminate whatever threat proved capable of felling one of us.”

A single breath.

”Dismissed.”

The projections began to dissolve.

Kisame’s vanished with a low, amused chuckle that lingered like smoke.

Deidara’s faded mid-eye-roll, the clay bird crumbling into nothing.

Itachi’s form simply ceased to exist, as though it had never been there at all.

Konan lingered a heartbeat longer, her paper wings folding once, then scattered into motes of light.

Hidan remained in the physical world, alone in the ruined shrine he’d claimed as temporary shelter. The rain outside pounded against the rotting roof. He hefted the scythe, the metal singing softly against the stone floor.

”Damn partner rule...” he muttered, his voice low and venomous. ”Damn Kakuzu... damn whoever did this.”

He kicked the door open with a crack of splintering wood and stepped into the cold night, the rain instantly soaking his silver hair. He grinned at the storm.

”Time for a ritual.”

---Tanzaku Gai - Forest Clearing---

The clearing was silent, save for the settling dust and the crackle of freezing air.

Two statues of ice stood as monuments to the battle. One was Ganri, encased in jagged crystals, his face frozen in defeat. The other was Kakuzu, a masterpiece of glacial preservation, his masks shattered and his body locked in a final, desperate lunge.

Haku knelt on the ground, his chest heaving. His arm throbbed where the bone had cracked, and his leg burned from the lightning graze. But he was alive. And he had won.

WHOOSH.

A figure dropped from the sky, landing silently on the grass.

Alaric folded his gravity-defying flight, his crimson coat settling around him. He took the cigar from his mouth, exhaling a cloud of smoke that mingled with the mist.

He looked at the scene. The uprooted trees. The craters. The frozen Akatsuki member.

”My-my...” Alaric murmured, a genuine smile touching his lips. ”It seems I trained you too good.”

He walked over to Haku, who was still kneeling, letting the Ashura no Mon seal do its work.

”An A-Rank and an S-Rank missing-nin, captured the same night,” Alaric complimented, looking down at his student. ”Kakuzu probably won’t have much on his head given that he’s a bounty hunter himself... but Takigakure will pay a pretty penny just to confirm he’s finally dead. And the bingo book update will be... entertaining.”

Haku let out a long sigh. The teal glow of his chakra faded as he relaxed his focus. ”I got lucky... Ganri was a veteran, but he was rash. And Kakuzu... his hearts were too vulnerable. I just sniped them with a couple of Jutsus because I knew his weakness.”

Alaric stared at Haku for a moment. He took a drag from his cigar, the ember glowing bright orange in the gloom.

”Lucky?” Alaric asked quietly. ”That’s interesting.”

Haku blinked and looked up, confused. ”Sensei?”

Alaric walked past him, stopping in front of Kakuzu’s frozen form. He tapped the ice with one knuckle. Clink. It was solid as diamond.

”You think you won because Ganri was rash,” Alaric continued calmly, studying the frozen fear in Kakuzu’s eyes. ”And because Kakuzu’s hearts were ’too exposed’.”

He turned back to Haku, his eyes sharp but not unkind.

”That’s not luck, Haku. That’s pattern recognition.”

Haku frowned, wincing as his arm knit itself back together. ”But Ganri made mistakes. He let himself be drawn out. He followed me. And Kakuzu-”

”-Kakuzu didn’t make mistakes,” Alaric interrupted flatly. ”He made assumptions.”

Alaric crouched down so they were eye level.

”He assumed you were young. He assumed speed without lethality. He assumed you’d break before his durability did. He assumed he was the hunter.”

Alaric’s voice dropped, heavy with certainty.

”Kakuzu is strong, yes... but strong shinobis die to someone who breaks their assumptions.”

Haku hesitated. ”Still... his hearts-”

”-were vulnerable because you made them vulnerable,” Alaric said, sharper now.

He gestured toward the battlefield... the shattered trees, the scorched earth where Haku had maneuvered.

”You cut his threads. You froze his chakra flow. You forced him to defend multiple vectors at once. Kakuzu’s hearts aren’t weak, they’re independent. Independence becomes a liability when the opponent can control the tempo of the fight.”

Alaric straightened up, towering over the boy.

”Ganri was a veteran, yes. And veterans die first when they get dragged out of their comfort zone. You took advantage of his range. You took away his calmness.”

He looked down at Haku, his expression unreadable but his eyes warm.

”You didn’t win because they were sloppy, because they aren’t sloppy.”

”...”

”You won because you were better prepared. You fought smarter.”

”Still...” Haku swallowed, looking at his hands. ”I almost died. If that lightning had been an inch to the left...”

Alaric nodded once. ”Good. That means you fought someone worth killing. Growth happens at the edge of death, not in the safety of a dojo.”

He placed a hand on Haku’s head... not gentle, but steady and grounding.

”Don’t insult your own work by calling it luck.”

His lips twitched into the faintest, proudest smirk.

”You fight the way you do because you trained under me. And I don’t produce lucky survivors. I produce monsters.”

He removed his hand and turned away, walking toward the frozen bodies.

”Get patched up. You earned it. I’ll treat you to somewhere nice soon. Maybe a hot spring resort that serves actual food.”

Alaric stopped in front of Kakuzu. He pulled a sealing scroll from his sleeve.

”As for me,” Alaric said, his eyes glowing red for a split second as he activated Vulcan to extract the metal ring from Kakuzu’s frozen finger. ”I’ll just quickly seal their chakras before this ice melts. We have a payday to collect.”
