Chapter 259: Chapter 258: The Trial of the Snake

---Konoha Council Chamber---

The air inside the Council Chamber was heavy, thick enough to choke on.

It was a windowless room, illuminated by the harsh glow of overhead lanterns that cast long, unforgiving shadows against the stone walls. The architecture was severe... concentric semi-circles of raised seating looking down into a central pit, designed to make anyone standing there feel small, judged, and isolated.

Today, the seats were full.

At the highest tier sat the Sandaime Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. He wore his official robes and hat, his face a mask of stone, though his eyes betrayed a deep, weary sorrow as he looked down into the pit. Flanking him were the village elders, Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane, their expressions pinched and anxious.

Below them sat the Clan Heads. Hiashi Hyuga sat with his back rigid, eyes closed. Shikaku Nara looked bored, leaning his chin on his palm, though his eyes darted around the room with sharp intelligence. Chōza Akimichi and Inoichi Yamanaka exchanged quiet whispers, while Shibi Aburame sat in silent, bug-infested stoicism. There were other clan heads as well, like the Inuzuka Clan Head, and other minor clans that didn’t seem relevant.

Opposite the clans sat the Civilian Council Representatives... merchants, guild leaders, and influential figures who managed the village’s economy and logistics. They were fidgeting, wiping sweat from their brows, their eyes wide with a mixture of fear and indignation.

ANBU operatives stood stationed at every wall, statues in porcelain masks, their hands hovering near their weapons.

And in the center of the pit, kneeling on the cold stone floor, was Orochimaru.

The Sannin was stripped of his usual pomp. Heavy chakra suppression cuffs locked his ankles and wrists, glowing with sealing script that kept his serpentine power dormant. Yet, even in chains, he smiled... a thin, mocking curve of pale lips that unsettled everyone who looked at him.

The heavy oak doors creaked open.

Heads turned. The tension in the room spiked.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway strolled in, hands in his pockets, an unlit cigar rolling between his lips. Beside him walked Jiraiya, the Toad Sage, looking unusually grim. They didn’t bow. They didn’t ask for permission to enter. They simply walked to the side of the room, leaning casually against the wall between two stiff ANBU guards.

Orochimaru’s golden eyes flickered to the side. He saw the crimson coat. He saw the relaxed posture.

’Tch.’

The Snake Sannin clicked his tongue, a sharp sound in the quiet room. He looked away, his jaw tightening.

Hiruzen cleared his throat to begin the proceedings, but before he could speak, a hand shot up from the civilian sector.

”Lord Hokage,” a portly man in fine silk robes stood up, his voice trembling slightly. ”Before this trial starts... where is Shimura Danzo?”

The name dropped like a stone into a still pond.

Murmurs erupted instantly.

”Yes, where is Lord Danzo?”

”He never misses a council meeting.”

”Especially not one involving a traitor of this magnitude.”

On the dais, Homura and Koharu stiffened. They exchanged a quick, worried glance. They had tried to send messengers to the hidden Root headquarters hours ago to coordinate their stance, but the messengers had returned empty-handed, claiming the entrance was sealed.

Danzo was gone.

Shikaku Nara’s eyes narrowed. He looked at the empty seat usually reserved for the warhawk.

’Suspicious,’ Shikaku thought, his mind racing through possibilities. ’Danzo missing on the day of Orochimaru’s trial? Did he flee to avoid being implicated? Or...’

Shikaku’s gaze drifted to the wall, landing on Alaric. The blonde man was calmly lighting his cigar with a flicker of chakra on his finger, looking utterly unbothered by the question.

’Or did someone remove the variable?’

Hiruzen sat silently for a moment. He looked at Jiraiya across the room. The Toad Sage met his gaze and gave a microscopic nod.

”Regarding Shimura Danzo,” Hiruzen spoke, his voice projecting authority that silenced the whispers. ”I have sent ANBU to his residence. There has been no response. I will launch a full investigation into his whereabouts after these proceedings.”

Orochimaru, kneeling on the floor, let out a soft, rattling chuckle.

’Did you run, Danzo?’ Orochimaru mused, amused despite his predicament. ’Are you so afraid that I would spill your secrets to save my own skin? How disappointing.’

The civilian representative sat down, looking unsatisfied, but another stood up almost immediately. This one was younger, sharper-faced, pointing an accusing finger toward the wall.

”And why is Jonin Alaric Jonathan Kenway present at a council trial?” the man demanded. ”He is not a Clan Head. He is not an Elder. He is not a member of this chamber.”

The murmurs rose again, louder this time. Hostile eyes turned toward Alaric. To the civilians, he was an outsider... a rich merchant who had bought his way into the ninja ranks and now stood in their hallowed hall like he owned the place.

Hiruzen’s lips twitched with a faint, almost cheeky smile. He looked at Alaric.

Alaric took a long, slow drag from his cigar. The ember now glowed bright orange. He exhaled a perfect smoke ring, watching it drift toward the ceiling before he deigned to answer.

”My, my...” Alaric drawled, his voice smooth and echoing slightly. ”Questioning a shinobi’s presence in a trial that doesn’t concern the civilian representatives? That’s bold.”

He pushed himself off the wall, taking a few lazy steps toward the civilian stands.

”The one in trial,” Alaric gestured loosely with his cigar toward Orochimaru, ”is a shinobi criminal. He committed shinobi crimes. Forbidden Jutsus. Human experimentation. Breaching village security barriers. Attempting a coup via invasion using foreign shinobi forces.”

Alaric stopped, looking up at the outraged faces.

”Civilian governance is meant to oversee trade, infrastructure, and welfare,” Alaric stated coldly. ”Not deciding the fate of shinobi matters they do not understand.”

He ended with a simple shrug, turning his back on them.

The room froze for a heartbeat. The insult was direct, surgical, and absolutely dismissive.

Then, the dam broke.

BAM.

The first civilian slammed his hand on the table, his face turning purple. ”Weapons!? Weapons are not the issue! You shinobi... always deciding for the rest of us! Who gave you the right to speak to us like cattle?”

”Ha!” another shouted, standing up and shaking his fist. ”And you, Jonin Alaric, who are you even? You have a service record of one mission for the village! And you think you can insult the Civilian Representatives like this!?”

”We fund your missions!”

”We build your walls!”

The chamber erupted into overlapping voices, a cacophony of accusations and indignation. The Clan Heads remained seated, watching the spectacle with varying degrees of annoyance and amusement. Hiashi’s eyes were closed. Inoichi looked tired.

Homura rose from his seat, raising his hands. ”Order! You will show respect! These matters are delicate—”

”Delicate?” a civilian barked, cutting off the Elder. ”You call the deaths of innocents delicate? The sacrifices we make... our families, our lives—mean nothing to you shinobi! We are the ones who suffer when you play your war games!”

”Your lives?”

The voice was quiet, lazy, but it cut through the screaming like a knife.

Shikaku Nara didn’t stand up. He didn’t raise his voice. He simply looked at the civilians with eyes that had seen too many battlefields.

”No civilian died during the invasion, but a couple shinobis did...” Shikaku stated, his tone precise and cold. ”This is not about disrespect. It is about reality. Orochimaru is a threat to all of Konoha, yes. But he is a threat that requires a kunai to solve, not a ledger. Your opinions, your outrage... they cannot protect the village from a Sannin.”

Shikaku leaned back. ”And... we are a military dictatorship. We allow a civilian council out of courtesy, not necessity. Whether or not Alaric-san is here doesn’t concern you.”

”...”

”...”

”...”

”...This is pathetic,” Hiashi Hyuga’s voice followed, icy and sharp as he opened his pale eyes to glare at the civilians. ”The criminal kneels at your center, a man who has killed the Kazekage, yet you quibble over governance and protocol. Do you, Civilian Council Representatives, have no discipline?”

Chōza Akimichi slammed a massive fist lightly onto the table, rattling the wood. ”And who was the one who stated that the civilians’ lives mean nothing to us!? We minimized the damages of the invasion for YOU! We evacuated the civilians because we are here TO PROTECT the civilians! Do not insult the blood my clan spilled holding the gates!”

A civilian woman, desperate and hysterical, leaned over the railing, pointing a trembling finger at Orochimaru. ”Then execute him now! Right here! What’s the use of this trial? Cut his head off and be done with it!”

”SILENCE!”

Hizashi Haruno, the head of the civilian merchant clan and representative, stood up abruptly. He looked furious, not at the ninja, but at his own colleagues.

”And you think execution solves anything?” Hizashi shouted, turning on the woman. ”What are you doing!? Bickering in the presence of Hokage-sama! You are shaming us!”

The room trembled under the weight of the anger, the factions teetering on the edge of a riot.

In the center of it all, Orochimaru tilted his head. He watched the arguments with the detached curiosity of a scientist watching rats fight over cheese.

”How... entertaining,” he murmured, his raspy voice slithering under the noise, drawing everyone’s gaze.

He smiled, wide and predatory. ”Konohagakure no Sato... the ’Strongest Village’... can’t even keep their so-called civilian representatives in their place. Kufufufu.”

BOOM!

The sound was singular. It was sharp and absolute.

Hiruzen’s cane struck the floor once.

The room flinched. Every voice faltered. The civilians sat down instantly, cowed by the sheer pressure radiating from the old man in the hat.

Hiruzen leaned forward. He didn’t look like a tired old man anymore. He looked like the God of Shinobi.

”This chamber is not a place for shouting matches,” Hiruzen said, his voice calm but heavy with the threat of violence. ”Orochimaru is a shinobi matter. It will be dealt with by shinobi. The Civilian Representatives are only here to be informed, not to control the outcome. You have no voice in regards to the fate of Orochimaru.”

He turned his gaze slowly to the man who had started the uproar about Alaric.

”And to answer your question,” Hiruzen pointed a withered finger at the civilian. ”I requested the presence of the Konoha Shinobi who captured the criminal in trial... do you have a problem with that?”

The civilian opened his mouth, then closed it. He looked at Hiruzen’s hard eyes. He looked at Alaric, who was blowing another smoke ring. He looked at the ANBU who had shifted their stances slightly.

”...”

”...”

”...”

Silence reigned.

Hiruzen nodded his head, satisfied.

”Well then...”

Hiruzen sat back, his gaze fixing on his former student kneeling in the pit.

”I, Hiruzen Sarutobi, Sandaime Hokage of Konohagakure no Sato, hereby declare the start of the trial of the prisoner named Orochimaru, member of the Sannin, former Jonin of Konoha.”
