I Am Your Natural Enemy

Chapter 246: Chapter 119: Spouting Nonsense, The Weakened (5k)

Wen Yan followed the Seventh Great-Uncle Master and the Eighth Uncle-Master Ancestor out of the underground cave.

The Eighth Uncle-Master Ancestor waved his hand, and the cave behind them returned to its original state, leaving only a bare patch of ground.

Wen Yan continued on with the two Uncle-Master Ancestors for the afternoon’s business. Sitting in the car, he took out the phone the Scorching Sun Department gave him and started checking internal files.

He searched for information about Holy Knights, and a huge amount of data popped up, even more than he’d expected.

Wen Yan was somewhat surprised; there actually wasn’t that much information about devils in the Scorching Sun Department.

But regarding Holy Knights, there was a lot, and even quite a few detailed case files.

With just a quick glance, he discovered that a couple of years ago, there was a huge case in Europa related to Holy Knights.

Wen Yan didn’t read for long before he started to feel this case looked familiar, like he’d seen it before.

He pulled out his personal phone and searched for keywords in his watch history, and sure enough, found a related video.

Someone had reuploaded a video from a conspiracy theorist blogger abroad. It covered how a small town in Europa was utterly destroyed in a massive fire, and it happened to be on a weekend, with a lot of people gathered in the church—ending up with a significant number of deaths.

This overseas conspiracy blogger even went there to investigate himself and pointed out a lot of suspicious details. According to the public report, it couldn’t possibly have burned down the entire building so quickly—people inside definitely had a chance to escape and couldn’t all have perished.

Even if it was ultimately deemed arson, there shouldn’t have been zero survivors.

It was more likely that a certain fringe religious sect that was popular locally at the time was conducting some kind of evil ritual.

When he first saw this video, Wen Yan hadn’t landed his job at the Virtue City Funeral House, so he just watched it as a story.

Putting away his personal phone and returning to the Scorching Sun Department’s phone, he checked the files again—and sure enough, it was this incident.

And the version in the Scorching Sun Department’s files was: some guy pretended to be a Holy Knight, used Holy Light to fool a super-rich guy, and got a ton of funding—helping him level up.

In the end, this guy wasn’t a Holy Knight at all. After making continuous progress with all these resources, he then staged a job-change ritual, left a huge mess, and vanished.

This incident caused a massive stir outside at the time, and even inside the Divine Land, you could see related news coverage.

But all the reports labeled it a disaster. Later, when they couldn’t keep it under wraps, it was said that after investigation, it was a man-made arson tragedy. As for the arson suspect, he was shot dead on the spot during arrest for violently resisting with a firearm.

You can still find the arrest footage now; filmed from a helicopter, it clearly recorded the whole process.

This case—plus the involvement of the keyword ”resurrection”—

Holy Knights immediately shot to the top of hot searches among professionals, departments like the Scorching Sun, and all sorts of supernatural circles all over the world.

At first, the information wasn’t easy to find.

Even the Church had to rummage through its massive internal library, flipping through books slowly.

But after just a few days, intel and data sellers had made a killing, and prices for related info crashed since more and more people tried to cash in.

Someone bought the full set of information for five million, then immediately turned around and started selling the whole set for one million apiece—a few sales would recoup costs, and everything after that was pure profit.

Ten times ROI in just a few days.

Some people made a killing, and others quickly followed suit—the bubble burst in no time.

The Scorching Sun Department staff on assignment in Europa got a complete set of Holy Knight files for just ten thousand.

Unlike a one-of-a-kind artifact, this data could be duplicated by anyone who’d ever attended school; once you recouped your costs, anything else you sold was just gravy.

The files spelled it out in detail: the Holy Knight class did, in fact, have some potential for resurrecting people.

But the restrictions were huge.

First, not just any Holy Knight would do—it had to be a top-tier one, specifically a Redemption Paladin who’d advanced to the highest level, and even then, it was only possible they’d gain the power of resurrection.

Key word: possible, not guaranteed.

Second, the resurrected person had to have an intact corpse, and already be properly buried through formal procedures.

Then, at the time of resurrection, everything also had to go through strict formal procedures—following the proper ritual step by step. Only then was it possible to bring someone back from the grave.

When Wen Yan saw the first requirement, he immediately knew He Changfeng was talking bullshit.

The Scorching Sun Department’s files were the most reliable and thorough set of data put together by those wily Europa businessmen during that period—after all, even scammers have to maintain a reputation or they can’t keep scamming in the future.

He Changfeng was definitely not a top-tier Redemption Paladin. By his own account, there was no way he could’ve completed all the necessary procedures for a Holy Knight resurrection if he was trying to make every second count at the time.

”Sure enough, he’s been hiding the truth. Then again, if it were me—dead for so many years and suddenly pulled back by a stranger—I wouldn’t blurt out everything either. For safety, you have to toss out some bait and string people along to buy time.”

Wen Yan thought about it. Given that He Changfeng’s consciousness had just resuscitated and his soul was incomplete, his performance was actually really impressive.

Unfortunately, He Changfeng would never have imagined that several years after his death, some huge incident would break out in Europa, ”Holy Knight” would blow up on the hot lists, and thanks to all those cutthroat businessmen, secrets about Holy Knights would be plastered all over the black market.
