I Am Your Natural Enemy

Chapter 239: Chapter 116: The Heavens Defy, Shelves (5k)_3

This time, there’s a big client footing the bill, so of course adding one more doesn’t matter.

Wen Yan didn’t mind having another one, either. If someone special shows up, just add them to the mix.

A kid who clearly spots an opportunity, yet knows not to hurt others—even if nothing else, at least his heart isn’t bad. He can be taught slowly.

Besides, Fuyu Mountain has never expected everyone they pick to achieve something.

After following the people from Fuyu Mountain around for half a day, getting familiar with the routine, Wen Yan drove himself back to Virtue City once it was dark.

He needed to go back and receive those three items sent over today.

After driving for several hours and arriving at the gate of the villa district, he saw a Scorching Sun Department transport truck parked there.

The local Scorching Sun Department member delivering the goods would rather wait here than go inside—they probably know a thing or two about what’s going on here.

Wen Yan felt a bit helpless.

”Couldn’t you just have called me? You waited here for so long.”

”It’s fine, I’ll leave once the shift’s up. This is standard safety protocol.”

”Alright then, I’ll take it in myself.”

Wen Yan pushed a simple little cart, loaded up the three packaged items, and brought them home himself.

He took the items to the basement, unboxed them, and assembled the shelves by himself.

After placing the shelves in the corner against the wall, the moment he put the stone sculpture up, Wen Yan’s gaze narrowed slightly.

The wall behind the shelves suddenly seemed to disappear—a window seemed to appear there, through which he could see a dark, overgrown patch outside.

He picked up the stone sculpture, and everything instantly returned to normal.

After putting the stone sculpture back, giving the shelf a gentle shake would also restore everything to normal.

After repeatedly testing it, he found that only when the shelves were set in the corner, with the stone sculpture placed on them, would a window appear between the two shelves, revealing an area of overgrown weeds.

Wen Yan took down the stone sculpture and looked at the shelves in front of him—no wonder no one had realized something was off about them when they were in the warehouse for so long.

The warehouse shelves had aisles on all sides, with no walls, let alone any corners.

Wen Yan took out a selfie stick, attached his phone, and stuck it through the opening to film around outside.

After looking at the footage, it was clear the place was wild and overgrown. Judging by the plants there, it was probably not in Nanwu County, but he couldn’t be sure where it actually was yet.

He took down the stone sculpture and put the Everbright Lamp on the shelf instead. The rear of the shelves became pitch-black, without a sliver of light.

He grabbed the selfie stick, stuck his phone out to take a look, and the instant his phone was out, the area outside suddenly flared up with firelight.

He immediately pulled his phone back and saw it was inside a tunnel, parts of which had already collapsed.

It seemed the noise had triggered a response, lighting the candles on the stone walls, illuminating everything inside.

Wen Yan quickly removed the Everbright Lamp, and the passage behind the shelves vanished as well.

He felt like he was starting to figure out what the shelves were for.

Thinking for a moment, he turned to look at Sparrow Cat, who was watching curiously nearby.

Sparrow Cat immediately retreated a few steps.

”Why are you looking at me like that? What are you thinking?”

Wen Yan grabbed Sparrow Cat and set him on the shelf. The rear of the shelves lit up brightly with flames, and Wen Yan only needed to glance to confirm that it was the Nanwu County Scorching Sun Department’s warehouse.

He quickly snatched Sparrow Cat back down.

”What were you thinking just now?” Wen Yan asked seriously.

Sparrow Cat muttered and answered honestly.

”I was thinking, if I die like this, it’d be so not worth it.”

”That’s it?”

”That’s really it.”

”Then try thinking of something else—like the Scorching Sun Department’s warehouse in Guanzhong County. There must be some treasure there you really want.”

Wen Yan put Sparrow Cat on the shelves again, but behind was still the Nanwu County Scorching Sun Department’s warehouse.

Wen Yan felt a bit disappointed. Looks like it’s not a universal portal, but fixed.

He asked Sparrow Cat, but Sparrow Cat couldn’t give any explanation either.

Wen Yan thought for a moment, then went to the Uncle’s Golden Pagoda and lit three sticks of incense.

”Uncle, please help me out.”

He placed the Uncle’s Golden Pagoda onto the shelf, and instantly a familiar scene surfaced on the wall behind.

Wen Yan hurried upstairs and saw, on the living room wall, a window over a meter wide and half a meter high, revealing the basement inside.

Now Wen Yan finally understood a bit.

As long as the shelves were placed snug in a corner against a wall, whatever item you set on them would open a window to the place that item most deeply wants to go.

That must be how it works.

He returned to the basement, took down Uncle’s Golden Pagoda, then brought over Little Zombie, placing him on the shelf—but nothing happened.

Wen Yan tried getting up on the shelf himself, but nothing changed either.

Sparrow Cat, seeing this, suddenly got a bit ruffled.

”What the hell is this thing!?”

”So it’s only useful with objects, living things don’t work?” Wen Yan probed tentatively.

”Nonsense! Am I not alive?”

”Well, I don’t really know, then.”

Sparrow Cat flew up by himself, and nothing happened behind the shelves.

Only when Wen Yan picked him up and placed him on the shelf did a window appear on the wall.

Wen Yan tested it out: the bottom and middle shelf levels both worked like this, but the top shelf didn’t.

He guessed maybe it required being between the two boards and the frame to form a window.

Looking at Sparrow Cat, Wen Yan suddenly recalled how he first met Sparrow Cat.

”Are you still hung up on your ancestor’s corpse?”

”No way, you already said it’s gone, so what am I still hung up on?” Sparrow Cat said unconvincingly, eyes drifting aside.

”You cat—lying is just like a real cat, you can’t even make eye contact.”

”Fine, but that’s not my fault, it’s all because of that Fake Mo Zhicheng. He’s dead and I still can’t let it go.”

”Do you think—it’s possible your ancestor’s corpse is in the Nanwu County Scorching Sun Department, right in their warehouse?”

”Right across from here?!”

Wen Yan didn’t even try; Sparrow Cat flew up there himself, but no window appeared.

”Are you out of your mind? That’s the Scorching Sun Department warehouse over there! You want to steal something from there? Do you realize the second you step inside, you’ll be shot dead?”
