High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 394: Chapter 63: Cousin, You’ve Been Tarnished_1

As the sun slowly climbed out of its slumber, the freshness of the morning became increasingly intense.

Plants, after fermenting overnight, produced a mesmerizing freshness; mixed with the thin mist from dew evaporation and fresh flavours rolling out of the soil, it released a breath known as ’vitality.’

This scent was particularly distinct on the tree-lined path.

In the crevices of moist stone slabs after frost, small weather-beaten patches of moss stubbornly stood upright in the early autumn morning; above their heads, the frost-bitten pagoda tree leaves ultimately refused to cling to the branches, laying out a red leaf carpet of varying brightness on the blue stone path.

The tree elves blocked most of the tree holes with dead grass, leaving only a narrow slit to observe the shadows coming and going under the tree, as well as the rotating drama on the long bench beneath the tree.

The long benches were initially provided by the school for the teachers and students to rest their feet.

But on this chilly morning, these cold benches clearly held no appeal for the hurried pedestrians.

Of course, appeal is relative under any circumstances.

In the eyes of the small creatures living in the University of Firsts, a bench that was dry, could bask in the sun, and was away from the damp stones was highly appealing.

Zheng Qing quickly accepted this setting, too.

After chasing off a defiant puppy, scaring away two tail-basking squirrels, and kicking away a mottled toad, the black cat who couldn’t sneak into the library finally got his wish and claimed a whole clean bench.

Perhaps it was the lazy cells hidden inside the cat’s body beginning to activate, but after only one setback, Zheng Qing gave up his plan to further sneak into the library.

The beautiful morning, the bright sunrise, the wonderful time, should be used to bask in the sun, not to hide in a stone house that never sees sunlight, smelling the stench of ink and rotten bookworm bodies between the pages, and strain one’s eyesight.

The black cat tucked his claws in, curled his body, and squinted his eyes, thoroughly enjoying this ’bewitching cat’ time.

Most of the students rushed past the bench, head down. A few students occasionally stopped and made ’meow’ noises, but before they got close, Zheng Qing would stretch out a paw, showing his sharp claws, making those with ill intentions retreat.

Fortunately, this was the University of Firsts, where wizards were always particularly tolerant towards small animals. The black cat lounging lazily on the bench was not in much danger.

Overall, up to now, the young wizard was quite satisfied with his ’cat life.’

But as two people gradually approaching him heatedly argued in a low voice, this satisfaction began to crumble.

”...you can’t waste all your free time on this.” A girl voiced her displeasure: ”You promised to go with me to the Silent Forest before school starts...”

”The prerequisite is that you first obtain the Certificate of Registered Wizard, otherwise not just at home, but the school will not permit you to step one foot out of Beta Town port.” The other voice sounded somewhat helpless: ”Besides, I did not spend all my free time on this...”

”Yes, yes, you didn’t waste all your time on this matter... you even squeezed out time to help a shameless guy who deceives even little girls with others’ matters.”

”He didn’t deceive you, you just got it wrong... you’ve forgiven him already, haven’t you?”

”Whether or not I’ve forgiven him, has anything to do with whether he’s deceived people?” The first girl seemed a bit frantic: ”Who are you truly close to!”

Black cat’s ears twitched.

Its whiskers cautiously withdrew.

He still hadn’t opened his eyes, but he already guessed who was approaching. This made him hesitate whether he should slip away unnoticed from the lawn.

But before his groggy brain could figure it out, someone already made the decision for him.

”Cousin, look, there’s a big black cat here!” Li Meng rushed over screaming, grabbing Zheng Qing’s tail in one hand.

”Ow!” The black cat violently turns around, the claw raised high off the ground abruptly stopped in front of the little witch’s face.

”Li Meng!” A stern voice forced the little witch to give up the fluffy tail in her hand, making the annoyed black cat’s scalp tingle.

Zheng Qing spotted a few icy glints from the corner of his eye.

He was absolutely sure that if he were to swipe down with his paw, regardless of whether this brat’s face was disfigured or not, he would definitely suffer.

Due to some magical theorems such as Mendel’s Paradox, wizards in shape-shifting form cannot make full use of their magical power. Therefore, Zheng Qing was essentially a black cat, only slightly stronger than ordinary feline creatures and endowed with superior intelligence.

A good cat doesn’t lose out in front of itself.

He’ll pick a quarrel with this brat later.

The black cat, with the thought in mind, ultimately withdrew his paw.

A refreshing, subtle scent rushed towards him as the witch walked hastily, making the black cat’s nose feel a bit itchy.

”Ah-choo...” He sneezed a few times, turned around indignantly, glared at the little witch in front of him, opened his mouth, and revealed his sharp teeth.

A tall figure appeared next to the little witch.

Jiang Yu tossed the Kun Bag she was holding onto the bench. She examined Li Meng carefully from top to bottom, fearing that she might have been hurt in the slightest.

”Meow!” The black cat disinclinedly meowed, and with a push of his foot, sent the Kun Bag sprawling onto the ground.

”Sis, it tipped your bag over!” The little witch yelled, pointing to the black cat. She excitedly pulled a law book from her pocket and waved it forcefully. ”Do you want me to avenge you?”

”Meow?” Zheng Qing froze, backing up a bit.

No matter what, while he was still a cat, he was certainly no match for this little demon.

”Shut up!” Jiang Yu slapped Li Meng on the back of her head. Then she turned around, picked up the black cat and held it in her arms, softly caressing its fur, whispering ”Little Mimi, are you hurt?”

The way the witch turned around, caught and held him was so swift and smooth that it caught him off guard.

Before the black cat, no, Zheng Qing, could react, he found himself buried in a fragrant embrace.

Happiness came too suddenly. It wasn’t until the witch had felt him up and down several times that the black cat seemed to react, wagging the tip of its tail slightly.

”Sis! Why are you casually holding a stray cat from the roadside?!” Li Meng next to her was again unhappy. ”What if it’s diseased?”

You’re the one who’s diseased!

Your entire... no, every part of you is diseased!

Zheng Qing bared his teeth, glaring furiously at the little witch.

”It’s glaring at me... Cousin, this cat is glaring at me!” As though discovering a new continent, Li Meng continued to chirp excitedly, ”It certainly has ill intentions!”

”It’s just a cat.” Jiang Yu’s voice sounded very helpless.

”Even if it’s not sick, what if it’s a wizard in disguise?” Li Meng’s next words nearly scared the black cat to pee its pants: ”And when I yanked its tail, I saw that it was a male... If it’s a male wizard, won’t you end up being taken advantage of? Do you want me to... neuter him?”

”What on earth is going on inside that little head of yours?” Jiang Yu extended her finger to poke at Li Meng’s forehead, appearing somewhat helpless, ”Didn’t you learn anything from the Wizard’s Code? Cats are protected under its provision and it’s illegal to harm them willy-nilly...”

”No, I was just trying to scare it.” Li Meng blinked her big eyes, looking at her cousin. ”Just now, this cat was definitely scared by what I said... it’s too smart to be an ordinary cat; it’s definitely a wizard in disguise... Cousin, you’ve been tainted.”

”Ah-choo...”

The black cat in Jiang Yu’s arms sneezed violently several times.
