High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 362: Chapter 31 Dimension Theory_1

Despite such confusion, as the dean, since Professor Yao has capriciously adjusted his schedule, students have no choice but to comply with his arrangement.

As for whether other classes should learn the ’Yuan Chen Guardian Spell’ in line with the schedule of Astronomy Class 08-1, or how to handle their Philosophy of Magic course on Wednesdays, these are not topics the students in his class needed to worry about.

Having changed it to a philosophy class, Old Yao casually put away his law book and lecture notes, and patted the chair underneath him.

The high stool transformed in the blink of an eye into a comfortable recliner. The professor laid down comfortably, beckoning to everyone and said, ”Relax, Philosophy class should be relaxed to comprehend the truth...”

Zheng Qing was very skeptical about this.

In his opinion, this might just be an excuse for the professor to be lazy.

However, the students in attendance had no objections to the professor’s method, and instead cooperatively put away their law books, stretched, and adopted an attitude of sharing weal and woe with the boss.

As the professor had once said, the Philosophy of Magic is a subject that is both simple and profound.

The simplicity lies in the fact that everyone can understand its principles; the profundity lies in that even great wizards, or even higher level wizards, are bound by the principles of the Philosophy of Magic in their behavior.

Just like the philosophy of the ordinary world, the Philosophy of Magic is also a discipline involving the worldview and methodology.

The wizards have gone even further in this regard.

Due to the tangible nature of magical power and the strong practicality of magic, the content of this class would even involve wizards’ understanding of the origin of the world.

In the previous philosophy classes, Old Yao painted a magnificent picture in front of everyone, simply narrating the truths that the wizards had perceived in their thousands of years of exploration. Philosophy class was their method of passing down these truths in a simple and direct manner.

According to the professor, only wizards who can understand the true essence of philosophy can go further in the future and touch more truths.

Zheng Qing was not particularly interested in what the truth was.

But the sense of mystery that Old Yao described when explaining the truth was very intriguing.

”There are three things most frustrating in this world: a burp trapped within your stomach, a sneeze pent up in your nose, and an understanding of the world within your brain that you can’t express. It always seems as though you can grasp something, but when you spread your palm, all that remains is empty air.” Lay on the recliner, Old Yao started talking leisurely as if telling a story.

”The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth. The named is the mother of ten thousand things.”

”What is the ’way’?”

”The ’way’ is the road, it is the destination, it is the guidance, it is the logic, it is magic... It is a concept that can be expressed.”

”Over the long course of history, those great wizards have spoken of their paths, shedding some light on the vague directions for us, the successors. As we have mentioned in previous classes, we will explore these directions one by one throughout this academic year.”

”So today, I’ll first introduce you to a major philosophical category of recent decades, Dimensionism.”

Old Yao reclined on his chair, his arm slightly raised and palm facing up, as if holding something.

The classroom lights slowly dimmed with his words, until everything turned pitch black. Only the faint glow on the wings of the small fairy flickered weakly.

”The Dimensionists believe that this world is dimensional.”

A blue light point appeared in the middle of the dark classroom, flickering and slowly moving. Each small movement left a footprint of faint blue dots.

Soon, the footprints of the blue light point formed a light blue line.

One, two, three.

Just in a blink of an eye, the dark mid-air filled with these crisscross blue lines.

”Dimensionists believe that the interactions between dimensions form the true and tangible basis of this world.”

The professor extended his finger as he spoke, gently stroking a long blue line in front of him.

This blue line connected to darkness at both ends. Upon a close look, it had no color difference from head to tail, no arc, no thickness. It seemed like a mere aggregation of some concepts, but it was clearly tangible as if one could touch it.

Yes, it can be touched.

Professor Yao’s finger pressed against the blue line, exerting some irresistible force on the tiny strand.

The blue line instantly showed a visible curvature.

As his fingertip slid gently downwards, the blue line seemed to respond and quickly snapped back into place.

”...This interaction is so pronounced that we can verify it through hundreds of different experiments... Just like this vector line you see, doesn’t it resemble a rubber band?...Most wizards believe that the oscillations of these bands orchestrate the phenomena of the world and the grand harmony of the universe...”

Zheng Qing frowned while frantically jotting down notes illuminated by the dim light of his pen tip, quietly criticizing the professor’s crude use of metaphors.

Of course, he faithfully noted down every word the professor spoke.

After all, he wasn’t sure if these words carried deeper implications.

When he lifted his head again, the view overhead had altered significantly.

The vibration of one vector line affected countless others entwined with it, or those that were but neighbouring it.

These vector lines resonated in harmony with the original line, emitting chords of varying pitch and intensity.

The vibrating blue lines left countless phantoms, making them seem like swaths of blue cloths.

Stacks of these ”blue cloths” overlapped to form three-dimensional spaces of varying sizes.

Occasionally, a few lines would snap and the notes they resonated stopped abruptly. Then, an indescribable darkness would abruptly appear, and those blue ”cloths” disappeared with it.

When they reappeared, what was formerly a single line had split into two unrelated new lines.

Zheng Qing watched this dark zone uneasily.

He sensed an immense terror brewing within it, but also endless opportunities.

Professor Yao’s voice echoed in the classroom again, pulling his attention back from that fleeting darkness:

”The birth of Dimensional Theory fundamentally explained many problems in the magical world that traditional theories couldn’t resolve...”

”... Let’s take the simplest example.”

”The Sand Time Worms, you should know... they caused a bit of a ruckus at the school a few days ago.”

Low voices of agreement filled the classroom.

Zheng Qing also nodded involuntarily.

”... Before the emergence of Dimensionism, wizards’ understanding of ’Sand Time Worms’ was very vague, very chaotic.”

”Traditional wizards regarded these creatures as pests born from nothingness... Earlier theories even considered them to be parasitic entities that fell off the bodies of gods... They were seen as harbingers of the ’Apocalypse,’ pets of the ’Four Knights,’ symbols of doomsday...”

”These vague explanations brought great disaster to these small creatures... Every discovery of Sands of Time would cause some degree of unease in the magical world... Leading to these amazing creatures being hunted almost to the brink of extinction.”

”After Dimensionism emerged, wizards extracted time points from the three-dimensional world and connected them to form a new vector line... They gradually discovered that ’Sand Time Worms’ were merely ’Pseudo-Higher Dimensional’ creatures that feed on the partial ’fibers’ of the ’time vector line’...”

”So ended the wizards’ thousands of years of fear for these little critters...”

Zheng Qing’s grip tightened on his brush, his face knit in a scowl.

As Professor Yao moved on to examples, his speech sped up somewhat, making it difficult for Zheng Qing to accurately capture the certain phrases. Especially those typical terms which could be quite confusing.

He had no choice but to mark down the professor’s words in terms he could comprehend.

Some details may have been lost in translation, but this was his interpretation. As the young cost student was taking notes, he felt a sudden epiphany. No wonder the veteran students used to say that the philosophy of magic tested not only a wizard’s understanding but their receptiveness as well.

”... Of course, in the course of subsequent studies by wizards, they discovered that ’Sand Hour Jelly,’ produced by the mother Sand Time Worms, was a very gentle potion for life extension and longevity, so these creatures were once again hunted to the brink of extinction.”

”That is another matter.”
