Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 1278: Chapter 1279: Losing This Identity

Meng Xinian interrupted her.

”Sorry, I don’t recognize you.” He looked toward Nian Mutong.

Chiang Xiao had mentioned how beautiful she was, but in his eyes, she truly paled in comparison to Chiang Xiaoxiao.

And seeing Nian Mutong, he felt utterly indifferent inside. In fact, the thought of her calling him Brother Xinian even kindled a bit of anger in him.

Duan Qingqing and Nian Mutong were both taken aback.

Duan Qingqing had thought the same as Chiang Xiao, assuming that as a relative of the Nian Family, Meng Xinian would surely regard her as special and treat her differently.

After all, his mother was the person he loved most in this family.

She hadn’t expected that Meng Xinian could be so indifferent toward Nian Mutong.

Nian Mutong also couldn’t believe that there could be a man who would be so cold toward her.

She suddenly felt a little hurt.

”Brother Xinian, I am...”

”Didn’t I tell you over the phone the day before yesterday? My mother is an only child; she has no sisters, so what do you mean by saying we share the same grandfather?”

Meng Xinian had planned to deal with this matter after spending the day accompanying Chiang Xiao, but now that it was still early and they had run into each other, he might as well settle one issue.

Right in front of his Little Kitten.

To spare her any future anger.

Duan Qingqing looked at Nian Mutong in surprise.

She didn’t even know that Mother Xinian was an only child!

In that era, it was extremely rare to have only children, as most had several siblings.

Nian Mutong clenched her teeth, uncomfortable, and said, ”Our uncle, Nian Che, has a sister, and that’s my mother and your aunt.”

”Pfft!”

Even Chiang Xiao couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

She had just heard Meng Xinian speak of the relationship between Nian Che and the Nian Family.

Nian Che was the illegitimate son of his grandfather’s brother, who didn’t dare to acknowledge him, so Xinian’s grandfather had taken him in as an adoptive son and allowed him to take the Nian surname.

In fact, Nian Che was Mother Xinian’s adoptive brother, technically also her cousin.

Nian Mutong’s mother, Mother Xinian’s cousin?

By the time it got to Nian Mutong and Meng Xinian’s generation, the relationship had become even more distant.

This relationship between cousins was no longer direct, but rather twisted and turned through several connections.

Moreover, Nian Che was considered Mother Xinian’s adoptive brother, having lived with the Nian Family from a young age, but his sister did not!

The relationship between these two families was indeed complicated.

She couldn’t help but smack her forehead.

Why was she being so petty over a distant cousin who wasn’t that closely related?

Duan Qingqing snapped out of it and quickly tried to mediate, ”Still, we’re all family.”

”Sort of a relative,” Meng Xinian’s mouth twitched, and looking at Nian Mutong, he said, ”If you don’t want to be thrown out right now, it’s best you stop calling me that.”

”Then, what should I call you?” Nian Mutong pouted but obediently asked.

”In the Supervisory Guard Team, I am an Officer; you can just call me Officer Meng.”

What kind of talk is that?

Cousins, yet call him Officer Meng?

Duan Qingqing immediately said, ”Isn’t that a bit too distant?”

”You too, Duan Qingqing, we both know what the other is made up of, so spare me the pretense in my presence.”

Meng Xinian said unapologetically.

”You, no matter what, I am still your stepmother!” Duan Qingqing really couldn’t save face, and upon hearing this, she got so angry that she forgot to be afraid of Meng Xinian, and retorted directly, ”Even with the word ’step,’ there’s still a ’mother’ in it! I am still your elder!”

”Elder? Stepmother? Believe it or not, I can strip you of that status as well?”
