Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 965: Chapter 966: Once Shared Life and Death

Meng Xinian listened to these words, his eyes deepening slightly, and said to Chiang Xiao, ”You stay here and chat with Xinzi for a bit, I’ll go and ask the doctor about his condition.”

”Okay.”

Meng Xinian gestured to Dai Gang and Gong Xinhe with a hook of his finger and took them outside.

In a deserted corner outside, he was silent for a moment before asking, ”The matter with Xinzi’s wound, have you all spoken about it?”

Gong Xinhe and Dai Gang exchanged looks, starting to understand what he meant.

”Officer, only the thirty-some people who were there that night in our camp know about these things. We haven’t mentioned it to anyone else, and we didn’t say anything when the doctor asked.”

The doctor did ask who treated their wounds, and they merely said a military medic, without elaborating further.

For anything that happened during the mission, they were already accustomed to keeping it private until Xinian said it was okay to talk about it, limiting the knowledge to their own people.

”Including the water you drank that evening?” asked Xinian.

”Officer, are you talking about that pot of medicinal tea?”

Medicinal tea?

This time it was Xinian’s turn to be taken aback.

He was used to drinking the tea brewed by Chiang Xiao; the pot from that night only had a faint taste of tea, which to him was no different from water, sweet water at that. But he hadn’t expected that they would consider that pot of water to be medicinal tea.

”Yes.”

That could work too. If they had thought it was water, they would certainly have been surprised by its medicinal properties. It was no problem if they regarded it as medicinal tea.

”Of course, we won’t talk about it. But, Officer, Officer Yang might know about it. We ran into Officer Yang today, and he asked about Sister-in-law,” they said.

Yang Zhiqi?

How would he know?

Meng Xinian furrowed his brow slightly, waved his hand, and said, ”I will talk to him about that. When you return, tell everyone to keep these matters to themselves and not to speak of them.”

”Yes,” Gong Xinhe and Dai Gang saluted seriously and affirmed, but then asked, ”But why, Officer? This is a credit to Sister-in-law.”

Not just the two of them; all thirty-some people from that day were grateful to Chiang Xiao.

Especially those few who had been helped by her and Meng Xinian. If it hadn’t been for the medicinal tea that Chiang Xiao provided, they might not have had the strength to carry on. And if she hadn’t supported them, they might have slowed down.

Apart from this gratitude, Chiang Xiao had already achieved a unique status in their hearts, as if she had shared a brush with death with them, forging bonds as if their lives had depended on each other.

In their eyes, Chiang Xiao’s age had been entirely overlooked. They all felt that, if anyone was worthy of their Officer, it was only Chiang Xiao, no other woman would suit.

Even in private, they had started to discuss that when the time came for Meng Xinian and Chiang Xiao to get married, what kind of gift they should pool their money together to buy.

Meng Xinian was silent for a moment before saying, ”If you really have her best interests at heart, then don’t speak of it. Chiang Xiao is still young, still in high school. I don’t want her to be affected by other people and things.”

Was he worried that many people would come knocking on his door for medicine?

Then Sister-in-law would get busy collecting, preparing, and delivering medicines. It wouldn’t be good if she provided for one but not another. Besides, some herbs might not be that easy to gather. What if someone took advantage of their status and insisted on getting them?

Gong Xinhe and Dai Gang quickly surmised the reasons for his secrecy and deeply agreed with his rationale.
