Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 498: Chapter 499: She Wants to Guard the House

By the time she ran over, she saw Ho Laidi’s body collapse limply to the ground.

”Ah!”

Song Xiyun let out a piercing scream.

In that moment, she truly believed Chiang Baohe had beaten Ho Laidi to death.

Chiang Xiao found out about the chaos at the Old Chiang Family on the third day.

That day, after she had subdued Chiang Songtao with a smashed, discarded stool and held another class with Chiang Songhai, Chiang Songhai originally felt restless and wanted to return to Siyang Village to check on things, but Chiang Xiao’s words deterred him from raising the subject again.

Chiang Xiao simply told them not to return to Siyang Village for the time being.

After all, it wasn’t necessary to go through the village to reach Bai Gu Mountain, and if they dared to come again, they would be directly thrown out the door.

For this reason, Chiang Xiao stayed at home every day for those few days, going nowhere.

Because once the three men were out, there were only three women left at home, the old one, and the pregnant one.

Chiang Xiao didn’t quite trust the situation and felt it was better for her to guard the home.

Well, even though self-proclaiming as the guardian felt a bit thick-skinned, she genuinely thought it was necessary.

Maybe it was because her heart had hardened now, but when she heard about the Old Chiang Family’s troubles from Yao Cong, her first reaction was actually relief: Hey, looks like there’s no need to worry about the Old Chiang Family stirring trouble for a while!

Cong Cong had come to town to run errands, and fearing they wouldn’t be notified if something happened in the village, so Chiang Xiao had left an address at Secretary Yao’s.

And this time Cong Cong made a special trip to tell her about the incident, which was also Secretary Yao’s intention.

”My uncle said, whether you want to come back or not is up to you, but we needed to tell you about this incident first,” Yao Cong said when Chiang Xiao was taking care of an orchid she had dug up from the mountain.

Xu Linjiang had discovered this orchid, and seeing its slender leaves and graceful stance, thought of Chiang Xiao and carefully dug it up to give to her.

Chiang Xiao got a flowerpot, stealthily filled the bottom with half a pot of black soil from the Space, then covered it with ordinary soil she had dug up outside, followed by a thin layer of sand, and a few smooth pebbles on top. With that, the orchid instantly looked fascinatingly delightful.

Yao Cong glanced at it and found it quite beautiful, looked twice more, and thought Chiang Xiao was really quite thoughtful. What he saw as just an ordinary Orchid Grass had become a potted landscape through her arrangement.

”It really is a lot of trouble for Secretary Uncle to think of everything for us,” Chiang Xiao washed her hands quickly after arranging the orchid and said to Yao Cong, ”And it’s a big hassle for Yong Cong Brother to make the trip here. I’ll tell my grandfather, but for the time being, we probably won’t be going back. So, Yong Cong Brother, I’ll have to trouble you to keep an extra eye out when you pass by my house occasionally.”

After all, with Iron General guarding the door while they were away, it was good to occasionally check if anyone was tampering with their locks or doors.

”Being so formal with me, I will check on it often. But, Chiang Xiao, you guys aren’t planning on never returning to the village, are you?” Yao Cong asked.

Even though Chiang Xiao was indeed considering gradually severing ties with Siyang Village, saying so outright would seem somewhat insensitive, given the help they’d received from Secretary Yao and Yao Cong among others. So Chiang Xiao smiled and replied, ”How could that be? We’ve only just built new courtyard walls not so long ago. If we weren’t planning to return, we wouldn’t have wasted the money.”

Yao Cong thought it made sense and smiled along.

”Alright then, I’ve got things to do, so I’ll be heading out.”

”Wait, Yong Cong Brother!” Chiang Xiao moved swiftly, taking two bags and filling each with two jin of roasted chestnuts from the pot, which she placed into Yao Cong’s hands. ”My maternal great-uncle sells these roasted chestnuts at the market. Try some to see if they taste good. Please take one to Secretary Uncle for me.”

Yao Cong didn’t really want to take them, but he couldn’t refuse Chiang Xiao and ended up accepting them.
