Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 153: Chapter 153: Awareness of Protection

Song Xiyun and Chiang Lidong, this mother and son pair, have the biggest appetites, they crave meat—this she believes.

But then again, what has their craving for meat got to do with her?

”Chiang Xiao, Dongdong is also your brother, as his sister, how can you have no fraternal affection at all?”

”And you’re supposed to be a niece-in-law, who taught you to climb over the wall into your uncle and aunt’s home to eavesdrop, to snatch meat?” Chiang Xiao looked at her coldly, ”How can you have no sense of shame at all?”

She threw Song Xiyun’s words right back at her.

Song Xiyun had not expected her to dare to talk back so directly, and she was so angry that her chest heaved violently.

Although the dishes from Peace Restaurant were expensive, they did not skimp on the oil, so despite the meals having cooled down after several hours, the rich aroma of oil and meat remained intense.

These scents constantly wafted into Song Xiyun’s nose, causing her craving for food to revolt collectively. She couldn’t help but salivate uncontrollably, and her eyes were glued to those two dishes, unable to look away.

Oil was very precious, and normally when they cooked, they would only add a few drops and then a lot of water—as if they were frying the dishes when in reality, they couldn’t possibly achieve the fragrance of heavy-oil stir-frying.

At that moment, Song Xiyun thought of nothing else. She didn’t care about the shame in climbing over the wall into her uncle’s house to eavesdrop; all she wanted was to figure out how to get those dishes into her mouth.

”You know nothing. Back when your great-grandfather was alive, these two houses were one, both belonging to the Chiang Family, all one family. We live in the east wing, and you in the west wing. I’m just moving from the Chiang Family’s east wing to the west wing—is that really so shameless?”

Heh heh.

Chiang Xiao had nothing to say to someone like Song Xiyun, who could step on her own dignity just for a few bites of food; she only glanced at her grandparents.

She wanted to see if they too agreed with Song Xiyun’s reasoning.

Indeed, these houses used to be one before Chiang Songtao and his brothers divided them with that wall in the courtyard.

In those times, the local customs were still simple. In small villages like theirs, there were hardly any outsiders, and everyone was from the same village, so the existence of courtyard walls wasn’t necessarily for keeping people out, but rather to demarcate territory and keep the chickens from running away.

For neighboring homes like Old Chiang’s and the Chiang Family’s, being actual brothers, there was of course even less reason to deliberately build high walls.

But with this incident involving Song Xiyun, Chiang Xiao felt that raising the courtyard walls had indeed become necessary.

As time would go on, their lives were going to get better, and there would be more possessions in the house. If Song Xiyun kept climbing over the wall, it wouldn’t just be troublesome for them; their reputation would suffer when it got out. Others would disdain Song Xiyun but would also speak ill of their family.

Inevitably, some would say, if it weren’t for their family being too stingy and hiding food, would Song Xiyun ever need to climb over the wall for it?

If Song Xiyun let Dongdong make a fuss crying for food, wouldn’t Chiang Songhai and Ge Liutao give their grandnephew something to eat?

But Chiang Xiao truly didn’t want to give them any food.

So, it was better to fortify their own little home against intruders.

Of course, there was another reason—she would be drawing at home in the future and would also be entering and exiting ”Space.” She didn’t want people always sneaking in and discovering her secret. It was better to be safe than sorry.

Although they didn’t have the money to raise the walls now, it was necessary to start instilling a sense of territorial protection in her grandparents.

Indeed, swept by Chiang Xiao’s insinuating gaze, Chiang Songhai—who initially didn’t think Song Xiyun climbing over the wall was a big deal—suddenly felt uncomfortable. His own granddaughter trusted him, implying that he should speak up and refute Song Xiyun.
