Who Let Him Play Yugioh? (Re-Upload)

Here’s the extra chapter!

Well done guys.

Next Goal: 500 PS.

==========

”First move goes to the challenger, your choice.”

Watanabe Shuichi was quite generous, clearly wanting to show the composure of a senpai and a duelist pro.

”Come on, do you want to go first or second?”

Of course, Kira didn’t hesitate: ”I’ll take the first move, draw.”

He swiftly drew three cards.

”I set a monster on the field, then set two cards in my back row. Turn end.”

”A defensive opening, huh?” Shuichi nodded slightly, commenting, ”But can you withstand the offensive of my insects?

My turn, draw!”

That’s right. According to the information Kira had found, Watanabe Shuichi used an Insect deck. The most famous user of insect-themed decks was, of course, the national champion and legendary duelist Insector Weevil. However, rumor had it that Weevil was utterly crushed by the first Duel King, Yugi Muto, and had since retired, never touching cards again—no one had seen him for ages.

Still, his championship did spark an insect craze and led to the development of many new insect cards. Though the old legend is long gone, duelists using insect decks are still common today.

Watanabe Shuichi: ”I activate the Continuous Spell Verdant Sanctuary’!”

Although it’s a Continuous Spell, its effect is similar to a Field Spell. A sea of green swept across the field, creating a lush terrain—vines and trees sprouting up, forming a perfect habitat for insects.

”Then I summon ’ Pinch Hopper’!”

[Pinch Hopper, ATK 1000]

”Watch closely, Kouhai. I won’t go easy on you just because this is a recruitment test!” Shuichi declared. ”I activate the Spell Card ’Dark Hole’! Destroy all monsters on the field!”

A celestial destruction—Dark Hole’s power opened on the field, its gravity devouring everything. Both Shuichi’s locust and Kira’s set monster were obliterated.

”My set monster was ’Sangan’,” Kira said. ”When this card is sent to the Graveyard, I can add a monster with 1500 or less ATK from my deck to my hand.

I’ll add this card—”

He revealed the monster he searched for.

”’Mythical Beast Cerberus,’ ATK 1400, added to my hand.”

”Then I’ll also use Pinch Hopper’s effect,” Shuichi said. ”When it’s sent from my field to the Graveyard, I can Special Summon an Insect monster from my hand!

So, I Special Summon this one!

From the depths of the shadowy forest, the reaper of death appears—

—’Dreadscythe Harvester,’ summoned!”

A six-legged insect killer, holding a scythe like the Grim Reaper, descended with authority between the trees.

[Dreadscythe Harvester, ATK 2300]

A freshman on the sidelines couldn’t help but remark, ”He summoned a boss monster right off the bat!”

”Using ’Dark Hole’ to clear the field and trigger Pinch Hopper’s effect—no wonder he’s a core member of the Duel Club...”

Shuichi: ”Not done yet! The effect of the Continuous Spell Verdant Sanctuary’: when an Insect monster on your field is sent to the grave, you can add another Insect monster of the same level from your deck to your hand.

I add another ’Pinch Hopper’ to my hand.”

He pulled a second ”Pinch Hopper,” shuffled, and put it back in the duel disk.

”Now, Dreadscythe Harvester,’ direct attack!”

The insect killer charged, its scythe about to strike. Kira calmly flipped one of his back row cards.

”Activate Trap Card—’Raigeki Break’! Discard one card, destroy any card on the field. I destroy ’ Dreadscythe Harvester’!”

Shuichi: ”!”

Dark clouds churned, a demonic hand reaching out, thunder striking down. In a single blow, the green insect was blasted to dust.

”Tch, you set up a trap like that...”

”And the card I discarded was ’Witch of the Black Forest’. When this card is sent to the Graveyard, I can search for a monster with 1500 or less DEF from my deck.”

Both Witch and Sangan have been nerfed twice—most recently with ”the searched card can’t activate this turn” and earlier requiring ”sent from the field” to trigger.

In the anime, these two have their original, broken search abilities—triggering from hand or deck.

”I add ’Don Zaloog’ (DEF 1500) to my hand.”

”Then the battle phase ends.”

Shuichi grunted, ”If you think I’ll leave my field open this easily, you underestimate me! Activate ’Monster Reborn’! Revive a monster from the grave.

Return, ’ Dreadscythe Harvester’!”

[Dreadscythe Harvester, ATK 2300]

”Set one card, end turn.”

”My turn, draw,” Kira said. ”Activate ’Graceful Charity’: draw 3, discard 2.”

He discarded two cards, one of which soon appeared.

”One card discarded was ’Card of Compensation’—when sent from hand to grave, draw two cards.” (Anime original)

Using both a banned card and an anime-only draw engine, he cycled through his deck, but even with new cards he frowned slightly.

Yesterday, when exchanging credits for cards, he spotted a legendary old combo in the academy’s collection and wanted to try it today. But even with all this draw power, the pieces hadn’t lined up yet.

So, he played a Spell Card to calm himself.

”’Eradicating Aerosol.’ All face-up Insect monsters on the field are destroyed!”

Shuichi: ”???”

You played... what!?

A giant hand emerged from a black vortex, spraying insecticide everywhere. Dreadscythe Harvester instantly exploded, and Shuichi almost did too.

Dude.

Why are you even running that!?

He held in his reaction for a moment, finally unable to help but ask: ”Uh... kouhai, do you always keep that in your deck?”

Kira answered decisively: ”Of course not.”

Why would I waste a slot on that?

Insects are so rare, that you might not see one in ten games—it would just brick my hand!

”Then why—”

”I put it in just to counter you, senpai,” Kira replied without hesitation.

A gentleman is open and honest.

But to Shuichi, it felt like a heavy blow to the head—he nearly blacked out.

He just wanted to say, ”Damn, you’re too honest...”

The students around fell into awkward silence, unsure what to say. Only Chazz was smiling again.

He knew it!

He’d noticed something was off when Kira was researching the defending members’ info before the match. He hadn’t picked Shuichi at random—there was a plot!

On paper, this senpai had the strongest record among the defenders, but Kira’s analysis revealed his deck was the purest—100% insects.

These days, most decks are a mix, but this guy’s was pure insects, which instantly reminded Kira of all those side-deck techs he had.

So, he decisively picked this lucky senpai as his test opponent.

Chazz’s sidekick whispered, ”Boss, your smile’s getting creepy again...”

Chazz: ”...No comment.”
