Litany of Winter

At second bell, Neumann led the nine into a part of the Order complex Severin had only passed once before.

The archive occupied a long chamber off the eastern corridor, warmer than the training halls and quieter than the rest of the underground complex. Shelves rose higher than Severin could reach, broken by rolling ladders and narrow cabinets full of maps. Books crowded the walls in dark leather and cloth, with newer printed bindings mixed among them. Paper labels covered older titles on some volumes. Others had fresh pages stitched into worn bindings.

An archivist in dark Order robes sat behind a broad desk near the door. A black cloth patch covered his left eye. He entered each name and arrival time in the ledger before handing Neumann a stack of stiff cards.

”Welcome, Initiates. Remember that nothing you see here leaves this room,” the archivist said. ”And nothing you learn here is to be shared outside the Order.”

Martin glanced toward the nearest shelf. ”Can we read anything in here?”

The archivist gave him a flat look. ”Yes. At your own risk.”

Neumann distributed the cards. ”You’re not here to admire the collection.”

Severin looked at his card. Four reports had been typed beneath the heading TRAINING EXERCISE.

Three goats found dead over a six-week period near a canal settlement. Iron tools at a lock house rusted badly overnight. A child reported pale lights moving inside a drainage culvert after dark. Symbols had also been found beneath a bridge.

At the bottom was a single instruction.

ASSESS THE REPORTS AND PREPARE AN INITIAL RESPONSE.

Rafael was already reading the card a second time.

”It’s got to be Deep-touched,” Paul said.

Thomas snorted. ”That was quick. How do you know?”

”I paid attention. There’s a canal.”

”No guesses,” Neumann said. ”You have the whole archive at your disposal. Use it.”

The nine split between the long tables. Rafael went straight to the catalogue drawers. Severin scanned the cabinet labels until he found FIELD REFERENCE and headed over. Martin reached it a moment later. Finding the right section without a hint pleased Severin until he opened the cabinet and saw twenty-three nearly identical brown volumes.

”The current ones have green stripes,” Martin said.

”I know.”

”Then why were you reaching for the red ones?”

”I was just checking.”

Martin pulled out the green-striped volume and pushed it into Severin’s hands.

Severin carried it back to the table. The book was thicker than his field manual. Numbered headings and cross-references filled pages of print small enough that he had to lean closer. He opened the index.

ARCHONS, 331.

CULT ACTIVITY, 72.

DEEP-TOUCHED, 184.

HERALDS, 307.

HORRORS, 231.

He started with the word Paul had used.

The section on Deep-touched was shorter than he expected. The first paragraph described them as ancient eldritch creatures associated with rivers, canals, lakes, and coastlines. Some lived beneath inhabited waterways for years without being noticed. Others moved. Their strength varied, but most known examples were considered roughly as dangerous as Horrors.

Severin read the last sentence twice. ”So they’re the same class as a Horror?”

Rafael looked over from the next table. ”Not the same class.”

”Yeah, yeah. You know what I meant.”

Neumann had heard him. ”Listen to him, Hale. Deep-touched and Horrors may fall within the same threat range, but they are not the same classification. What they are and how we deal with them can differ wildly.”

Severin nodded and flipped to Horrors.

The wording there was plainer. Horrors were eldritch entities weak enough to enter the world in physical form. Some crossed as they were. Others could fashion bodies from human or animal remains once they were here. The manual still called them lower threats, though the examples ranged from minor disturbances to attacks that killed people or destroyed small settlements.

He tapped the page. ”How the hell are these called lower threats?”

”Because they are,” Anna said from across the table.

”One of these killed twenty-seven people by itself. You call that weak?”

Anna glanced over. ”It says lower, Hale, not weak. Weak enough to cross into our world without a host.”

Madeleine had taken the cult section. She ran a finger down the page without touching the print itself. ”So cultists aren’t an entity classification?”

Neumann nodded once.

She read on. ”Human worshippers and servants of eldritch beings. Their danger comes from attempting summonings, preparing vessels, performing rituals, or seeking power from what they serve.”

Severin looked up. ”Wait. So the man at the freight yard?”

”Exactly,” Neumann said. ”He was human, but his actions and the materials he carried were consistent with cult activity. We still don’t know which cult he belonged to or what they served.”

Severin went back to the index.

Paul had found the Herald section and was reading fast enough to make Severin dislike him for a moment.

From the next table came Paul’s voice. ”Heralds can’t cross into our world normally. It says they need a host.”

”A compatible one,” Rafael added.

Thomas leaned back in his chair. ”So the stronger these things get, the harder it is for them to get in.”

”No,” Neumann said. ”You might never see a Herald in your entire life. But if you do, it can wipe out an entire city in a few hours.”

That quieted the table.

Severin found the relevant paragraph. A manifested Herald was considered a city- or nation-level threat. It could possess a human host, but only with consent, or enter a body deliberately prepared to receive it. The manual spent more space on stopping either process than explaining what happened afterward.

The Archon section was shorter than Severin expected, and he read it twice to make sure he had not missed anything.

”Just four pages?”

”More like three,” Martin said. ”The last one’s just references.”

Archons were described as beings too powerful to enter the world physically under any known conditions. They could still influence it through visions, bargains, servants, and other indirect means. Only one was listed as an example: Vhazroth.

”What do we do if we ever have to deal with one?” Severin asked.

Neumann was sorting reference slips at the head of the table. ”Then we’re all fucked, Hale.”

Martin smiled despite himself.

Neumann ignored him. ”If one of them could ever enter our world, that would probably be the end of it. Any credible evidence of Archon influence gets reported immediately to the Master.”

”Why?”

”Are you thick, Hale? We have no way of fighting something like that. The Order only exists because one of them decided to give us a fraction of its power.”

Severin looked back at the page. Nobody spoke for a few seconds. Then Neumann resumed sorting the slips, and the room returned to work.

Rafael and Paul worked through possibilities tied to the canal while Madeleine checked the bridge symbols against references on cult practice and local devotional markings. Anna asked for veterinary and medical material. Johann began arranging the reports by date on a blank sheet, while Andreas ignored the creature books and went straight for witness procedure.

Thomas stayed with the exercise card. ”Who examined the animals?”

Neumann looked at him. ”Not stated.”

”Who decided they were strange deaths?”

”Not stated.”

Thomas pushed the card toward Anna. ”Then we don’t know what killed them.”

Anna nodded. ”We don’t even know if they were poisoned, sick, torn apart, or something else entirely.”

Severin had already pictured bloodless carcasses because dead goats beside a canal sounded like something that belonged in one of these books. He scratched out the note he had started.

Andreas returned with a thin police procedure volume tucked under one arm. ”Were the reports taken by the same person?”

Neumann handed him another card with the dates and sources.

The goats had been reported by their owner over six weeks. Nine days after the last one died, the lock keeper reported the rusted tools. The child’s account was written down by her father three days later, while the bridge symbols had been reported two months earlier during masonry repairs.

Johann stopped writing while Paul frowned at his notes.

Rafael read the dates again. ”These were grouped together afterward.”

”By whom?” Andreas asked.

”A district clerk,” Neumann said. ”Four strange reports from the same settlement were enough to send them our way.”

Madeleine looked at the card. ”That doesn’t mean the clerk thought they were connected.”

”No.”

Severin looked down at the original card.

The goats, the rusted tools, the lights, and the symbols were all on the same card. Everyone had treated that as proof they belonged to the same problem.

He read the instruction again: ASSESS THE REPORTS.

The card only asked them to assess the reports. Nothing on it said one creature caused all four.

He rubbed the side of his thumb over the edge of the card.

”Who says there’s one incident?”

The others looked toward him, but Neumann kept his attention on the slips.

Severin held up the card. ”The clerk sent four things in the same packet. That’s all we know.”

For a moment nobody spoke, then Rafael pulled his notes closer and crossed out something near the top.

”Fair,” Rafael said.

Paul still looked unconvinced. ”The canal still matters.”

”Of course it fucking matters,” Severin said. ”It just doesn’t mean the goats, the rust, the lights, and those symbols all came from the same thing.”

Neumann looked up. ”Good. Now work out what you’d actually do when you got there.”

After that, they stopped trying to name a creature and started working out what they would actually need to check.

Rafael worked through the reference index, looking for signs that would actually support a Deep-touched presence, while Paul copied down the relevant checks for the canal and nearby structures. Madeleine compared the bridge symbols against cult references and local devotional markings. Anna focused on the animals, listing what would need to be established before anyone called their deaths occult.

Andreas wanted the witnesses questioned separately with their original wording preserved, while Johann rebuilt the chronology without assuming the reports were connected.

Thomas asked what work had been done at the lock house before the tools rusted, and whether anyone had changed the cleaning chemicals or stored the tools somewhere different.

Martin found the section on what equipment a first team could request and passed it around.

Severin went back to the index.

He was still slower than Rafael and still lost his place when one entry sent him through two cross-references and an appendix. But he no longer read every page between one reference and the next. He found the section on unknown incidents, then the subsection on provisional classification.

The first line was simple enough.

DO NOT ASSIGN A CLASSIFICATION THAT EXCEEDS THE EVIDENCE AVAILABLE.

He copied it onto his slip, then stopped. It sounded like exactly the sort of sentence Neumann would make him rewrite if he used it without applying it.

Below it, the manual listed what a first team needed before settling on a classification: what had actually been observed, how reliable the witnesses were, what physical evidence existed, and whether the reports could be shown to share a cause.

Severin added one question beneath his notes.

What evidence linked any two reports?

When Neumann came around the table, he read Severin’s slip without comment.

”What do you classify it as?” he asked.

Severin looked at HORROR near the top of his slip. He had crossed it out twenty minutes earlier.

”Unknown.”

”What do you prepare for?”

He glanced over Paul’s water notes, then at Madeleine’s symbol references and the questions Anna and Andreas had written down.

”Everything we can.”

Neumann took the slip. ”Acceptable.”

Severin expected nothing more, which suited him fine.

The archivist began collecting the books before third bell. Each one was checked against its issue card and returned to a cart in shelf order. Martin tried to put his own volume back, but the archivist stopped him and pointed to the table.

Severin closed the green-striped field reference last.

The cover was newer than some of the pages inside. A replacement page had been pasted over an older one near the Horror section, with three amendment numbers printed at the bottom.

On his slip, HORROR was crossed out above UNKNOWN. Neumann put it into the same stack as Rafael’s, and Severin watched it disappear beneath the others.
