HG-05: FAITHS OF THE KNOWN WORLD THE HOLLOW GOSPEL CODEX

Religion crosses national borders more easily than governments do. Across the four great powers, organized churches exist beside inherited local practice and family observance, much of it predating the institutions that now surround it.

Order doctrine requires evidence before religious behavior is treated as supernatural collaboration. An unfamiliar prayer, burial custom, sacred object, or regional belief is insufficient on its own. Cultist classification requires deliberate cooperation with the unnatural through service or invocation, bargaining, deliberate exploitation, or comparable conduct.

This distinction matters most in isolated communities, where practical rules and religious explanation may have developed together over generations.

Among the religions encountered across the known world are the Eternal Church, the Children of the Sea, the Monks of the Storms Eye, and the Followers of Steel.

They differ greatly in size and organization. None should be treated as Cultist activity merely because its beliefs fall outside the traditions familiar to an investigator.

THE ETERNAL CHURCH

Followers: Eternalists

Principal Symbol: The Eternal Ring

Principal Headquarters: Vhaldrik

Presence: Vhaldrik, Aethermere, Solmara, and parts of Dorvak

The Eternal Church is the most widespread organized religion in the known world. Its congregations cross national borders, but their political position depends upon the laws and institutions of the country in which they operate.

Followers worship the Eternal through private and communal prayer, and devotional objects are common among practicing Eternalists. The Church maintains ordinary places of worship as well as larger religious houses, while its public work includes food, shelter, charity, and other forms of public mercy.

Those services give the Church influence beyond its most committed congregations, particularly in districts where state or municipal assistance is limited.

THE ETERNAL RING

The Eternal Ring is the faith’s most recognizable symbol. On buildings, the Ring is represented as a circle divided by a single vertical line. It may be carved above a chapel entrance or incorporated into other Church property.

Smaller personal versions are also worn by believers. A silver Ring on a chain is one established form of devotion and can identify an Eternalist even when no church is nearby.

The symbol is recognizable across the four powers, including regions where the Church has little political influence.

CHURCH ORGANIZATION

The Eternal Church maintains an organized clergy whose responsibilities change with location and office.

Priests serve ordinary congregations. Remote districts may be assigned field priests, whose duties can place them far from major Church institutions and require regular correspondence with distant superiors.

Larger jurisdictions include offices such as archdeacon and bishop. Monasteries or comparable religious houses may be led by abbots, while cardinals belong to the senior levels of Church authority.

The principal headquarters of the Church lies in Vhaldrik, though distance can still leave a rural priest with little immediate access to senior decision makers.

THE ETERNAL CHURCH IN VHALDRIK

Vhaldrik contains the principal institutional center of the Eternal Church, where Church authority exists beside a powerful Imperial state. The two institutions cooperate openly when their interests align, but neither is simply an office of the other.

The Church maintains a strong public presence in both cities and rural communities. Senior clergy can hold considerable social influence without replacing Imperial civil authority.

Their relationship with the state depends heavily on jurisdiction and circumstance. Religious authority may matter greatly within Church institutions while Imperial officials retain responsibility for ordinary civil government.

THE ETERNAL CHURCH IN AETHERMERE

The Eternal Church is influential throughout the Aethermere Crown, where formal worship often exists beside older maritime or rural practice.

Sailors may attend an Eternal chapel while carrying protective charms or observing inherited rules aboard ship. Mining and farming communities can preserve their own customs without regarding them as incompatible with Church membership.

Access to permanent clergy varies by region. Major cities can support substantial Church institutions, while isolated settlements may depend more heavily upon inherited local practice.

THE ETERNAL CHURCH IN SOLMARA

The Eternal Church is the largest individual religion in Solmara, but the Republic remains constitutionally secular.

Several faiths receive legal recognition, and the Church possesses no exclusive authority over the state. Religious plurality is therefore ordinary in Solmaran public life.

A committed Eternalist may study at a secular university or hold public office while working closely with citizens of other faiths. Religious commitment and republican civic identity are widely capable of existing together.

THE ETERNAL CHURCH IN DORVAK

The Eternal Church operates throughout parts of the Dorvak Free States but has less support there than among the other great powers.

No federal religion exists. The eight countries retain varied local traditions, some of which predate substantial Eternal Church influence.

An Eternal chapel can therefore stand in a town where unrelated religious practices remain active nearby.

CHURCH AND THE UNNATURAL

The Eternal Church has existed long enough to accumulate records concerning events that ordinary doctrine does not easily explain.

Such knowledge is unevenly distributed. A rural priest may possess little beyond approved teaching and local records, while a senior office can hold older material unavailable to an ordinary congregation.

The Blinded Crown and the Eternal Church remain separate institutions. Their interests sometimes overlap when an investigation concerns clergy, a religious site, an old Church record, or a claimed miracle.

Neither institution is required to accept the other’s explanation. Blinded Crown personnel are expected to investigate the evidence available in the case.

CHILDREN OF THE SEA

Region: Grayhook Isle

Deity: The Almighty

Other Divine Titles: Keeper of the Drowned, Abyssal Devourer

Central Priesthood: None

The Children of the Sea are the traditional faith of Grayhook Isle.

They worship a single God of Seas known primarily as the Almighty.

The same deity is addressed through other titles depending upon circumstance. Keeper of the Drowned is associated most closely with death at sea and the treatment of those who have drowned. Abyssal Devourer expresses the feared aspect of the same god when the sea destroys rather than sustains.

These titles do not represent separate deities.

The Children of the Sea developed within an island community where survival has always depended upon fishing and dangerous crossings as well as the willingness of neighbors to answer rescue calls.

Religious obligation is therefore closely connected to communal responsibility.

THE KEEPER OF THE DROWNED

When speaking of death at sea, the Children of the Sea commonly refer to the Almighty as the Keeper of the Drowned.

Grayhook belief distinguishes between a person who has truly drowned and someone who was spared before death.

Those who die by drowning are understood to have entered the Keeper’s care. When no body is recovered, the person is already considered received.

Recovered dead are formally returned to the sea. The same observance is used for islanders who die on land.

The title carries both fear and consolation. Death at sea is understood as a return into the Keeper’s possession rather than abandonment.

THE SEA OWED

A person spared from drowning is regarded as sea owed, and the obligation is understood as lifelong.

Sea owed islanders are expected to answer rescue calls when able and support families affected by drowning.

Personal offerings may also follow dangerous survival or unusual good fortune. Grayhook practice sets no universal tariff because the meaning of an offering depends upon the person giving it.

The belief rests on a simple principle within Children of the Sea tradition: a life returned by the Almighty carries an obligation toward lives threatened by the sea.

For some islanders, sea owed duty becomes a major part of community identity long after the original incident.

THE ABYSSAL DEVOURER

The title Abyssal Devourer is used when Children of the Sea tradition emphasizes the destructive nature of the Almighty.

The title does not describe an opposing evil deity.

Grayhook belief accepts the same sea as both necessary for life and capable of taking it. The Almighty may therefore be addressed differently according to the situation confronting the believer.

The Abyssal Devourer is most commonly associated with dangerous waters and the possibility that those who enter them may never return.

Fear of this aspect exists inside the same religion as reverence for the Almighty.

RITUAL AUTHORITY

The Children of the Sea maintain no centralized priesthood.

Ritual responsibilities are distributed among practical communal offices and inherited customs.

The best documented example is the Tide-Seer. The title carries no supernatural power. In older Grayhook usage, seer refers to someone charged with witnessing disputes and preserving community memory, including the interpretation of inherited obligations.

A Tide-Seer keeps records of disputed drownings and recoveries along with sea owed duties. Older rescue histories and formal wording for important observances also fall within the office.

The Tide-Seer is a communal religious authority rather than a prophet or occult practitioner.

MONKS OF THE STORMS EYE

Scale: Minor religion

Organization: Monastic

Presence: Limited and scattered

The Monks of the Storms Eye form a much smaller religious tradition than either the Eternal Church or the Children of the Sea.

They are known primarily through isolated monastic communities rather than large public congregations.

Their name comes from the image of stillness within violent weather. Monastic teaching places importance on maintaining judgment when the world around a person has become chaotic.

Storms therefore carry both practical and religious significance within the tradition.

Individual monasteries preserve their own practices, and outsiders often know little beyond the name and the severe discipline associated with its monks.

The Monks of the Storms Eye possess no major political authority comparable to the Eternal Church. Their small numbers and isolated communities mean many people may live their entire lives without knowingly meeting one.

The exact history of the faith and the relationship between its individual monasteries are poorly understood outside the tradition.

FOLLOWERS OF STEEL

Scale: Minor religion

Organization: Decentralized

Presence: Scattered communities

The Followers of Steel are a smaller religious tradition most readily associated with communities where skilled craft and physical labor hold strong cultural importance.

Steel carries religious meaning within the faith as something made useful through human effort.

Followers commonly treat the forging process as a model for discipline. Metal must survive heat and the hammer before it can be trusted under strain, and the same language appears in descriptions of personal duty.

This does not mean Followers of Steel simply worship metal.

Their faith places greater importance on what steel represents: useful work, practiced skill, endurance under pressure, and the responsibility of a maker for what leaves their hands.

The religion has no single authority recognized across the known world. Local communities may therefore differ in observance while identifying themselves through the same wider tradition.

Detailed rites and the earliest history of the Followers remain poorly documented outside their own communities.

DORVAK RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS

There is no single Dorvak religion. The eight Free States contain a broad collection of traditions whose importance changes between coast and interior, and many operate without a centralized religious authority.

The examples below represent established types of practice rather than a complete catalogue.

SACRED WELLS AND DESERT SAINTS

These traditions are especially associated with Valdosa and the western interior, where water holds obvious religious importance in settlements that depend upon carefully maintained wells.

Desert saints also appear in traditions concerning dangerous travel and survival, especially accounts of people lost beyond settled routes.

Protective customs may accompany travel toward the Glass Desert. Their wording and form vary between communities, so a practice recorded in Sandspire should not automatically be attributed to every Valdosan settlement.

MARITIME AND STORM TRADITIONS

Dorvak’s coastal countries preserve numerous traditions connected to the sea.

Some concern safe passage or fishing. Others focus upon storms and local protective figures associated with particular communities.

No single institution governs these practices across the Free States.

The coastal states share practical concerns without sharing one religious system. Sailors moving between their ports may therefore recognize the purpose of an offering without recognizing the religious explanation behind it.

ANCESTORS AND HOUSEHOLD SPIRITS

Some Dorvak traditions remain centered on family and household life.

Ancestor observance and belief in household spirits can continue without formal clergy.

A family may also participate in a larger public religion while maintaining older practices at home. Attendance at a temple therefore does not necessarily describe the full religious life of a Dorvak household.

SUN TEMPLES AND LOCAL PROTECTORS

Sun temples exist within parts of Dorvak alongside traditions devoted to local protective figures.

Organization varies by region. Some practices belong to permanent institutions, while others remain attached to one town or community.

The federal structure of Dorvak gives these traditions room to coexist without requiring a shared theology across all eight countries.

FAITH, SUPERSTITION AND CULT ACTIVITY

Order personnel are trained to separate ordinary religious practice from deliberate supernatural cooperation.

The distinction can become difficult when inherited religious practice overlaps with unexplained phenomena. Investigators first establish what a practice does and what its participants believe they are doing. They then look for evidence that someone is knowingly serving or invoking an unnatural power, bargaining with it, or deliberately exploiting it.

Foreign origin and great age do not make a religion Cultist activity.

The same rule applies to obscure faiths.

A secluded Storms Eye monastery is not suspicious merely because outsiders do not understand its ceremonies. A Followers of Steel shrine inside a foundry does not indicate supernatural influence because its imagery appears unusual.

Evidence must come first.

RELIGION ACROSS THE FOUR POWERS

Religious life follows different patterns across the known world.

In Vhaldrik, the Eternal Church operates from its principal institutional center beside a powerful Imperial government.

Aethermere also has substantial Eternalist influence, though local customs remain common. Grayhook is the most distinct example, where the Children of the Sea continue to dominate communal religious life despite the island belonging to the Crown.

Solmara protects religious plurality through a secular republican system. The Eternal Church remains its largest individual faith without becoming a state religion.

Dorvak displays the greatest visible religious variety because its eight countries preserve separate local traditions and no federal religion exists.

Smaller religions such as the Monks of the Storms Eye and Followers of Steel can also be encountered beyond the regions where larger faiths dominate.

ORDER REFERENCE

Religious affiliation should be recorded when it materially affects an investigation, but it cannot substitute for evidence.

A devout Eternalist may know nothing about the supernatural. A member of the Children of the Sea can invoke the Almighty or Abyssal Devourer without serving an eldritch entity. The Monks of the Storms Eye and Followers of Steel are likewise recognized religious traditions rather than automatic Cultist classifications.

The Blinded Crown classifies deliberate cooperation with the unnatural.

The name of a person’s god is not enough.
