Litany of Winter

The next morning, Severin was back in a workroom off the training hall. Numbered racks covered one wall, with stoppered bottles fitted into place above shallow handling trays.

He had been there less than ten minutes when Neumann caught his wrist before the brown glass jar in his hand touched the wrong tray.

”Read the mark first.”

Severin looked at the brown glass in his hand. A paper strip had been tied around the neck beneath a waxed cord. Most of the writing meant nothing to him. He could make out the number and an inspection stamp. Beside them sat a black symbol shaped like a circle cut by a straight line.

He stopped.

Across the workroom, Martin had already placed two packets where they belonged. Rafael was farther ahead, his reference book open beside three sorted containers, while Anna worked through a specimen jar at the next bench without needing to check twice.

Neumann let go of Severin’s wrist. ”You planning to stand there all morning?”

Severin turned the jar toward the light and saw the mark clearly: 🜕.

He knew the mark from the crates in Blackhaven. He had no name for it and no idea what it meant, but he had carried one of those crates through the freight yard with both hands.

Severin set the jar back in the center of the bench instead of either tray and pulled the thick reference volume closer.

This time he ignored the first page.

The index near the back listed symbols by shape. He found the circle and the line through it, which led to a page number with two references beside it. One led to older alchemical notation. The other went to handling rules.

Martin glanced over from the next place. ”Found it?”

”Shut up.”

Severin reached the page and found the word NITRE at the top.

The sentence beneath took longer. He worked through the formal wording until he found the useful part: volatile or unstable material, separated until its exact composition was established. A diagram beneath the entry showed two marked containers with empty space between them.

He left the jar where it was. ”I’ve seen this before.”

Across the room, Neumann had been correcting Paul. He came over and looked at the open page, then at Severin. ”Where?”

”Back home in Blackhaven. I saw it painted on some crates at the freight yard.”

Neumann pulled a blank slate from the end of the bench and set it beside the book. ”Show me.”

The first mark came easily under Severin’s chalk: 🜕.

He added the second mark he remembered from the same side of the crate, 🜔, then worked more slowly through the third until 🜍 sat beside it.

A hooked line began beside it. Severin stopped halfway and stared at the unfinished stroke before wiping it away with his thumb.

Neumann looked at the gray smear.

”I’m not sure of that one,” Severin said.

”Then skip it.”

Severin nodded. Better to leave it out than guess at the missing stroke.

Rafael and Martin moved closer while the others kept working. Severin pointed at the slate and explained that all three marks had been painted beside the freight number on the same crate. There had been others, cramped strokes and hooks, but he could not reproduce them well enough to trust.

Neumann sent Rafael and Martin to the index while Severin stayed with the first entry.

The handling note gave him more than the name had. Marked material stayed apart and had to be protected from impact. The symbol by itself was not a complete description of the contents.

That explained another detail from Blackhaven.

He remembered Pike snapping at them to be careful, then the guard refusing to let men roll the crates. One loader had reached for a chain, and the guard knocked his hand away.

Severin looked at the old diagram again. The distance between the drawn containers was close to the space Pike had demanded inside warehouse three.

Martin found the second mark first. ”Salt.”

He traced the entry with one finger. The mark referred to fixation and preservation, especially resistance to decay.

Anna heard that from the neighboring bench and came over. She read the short handling note, then tapped the word for preservation. ”That part’s ordinary enough. It’s for keeping tissue or specimens from spoiling.”

Severin remembered the finger floating in liquid and the gray tissue pinned open in another jar. Smaller containers had sat nested in packed salt.

”There was preserved flesh in the shipment, and one piece was human.”

Martin stopped leaning on the bench.

Severin kept to what he had actually seen. There had been tissue, bone, powders and bottles. One dark red mass inside a jar had tightened and relaxed after Hans lifted it.

Paul looked over at that. Neumann pointed them all back to the slate, and Rafael found the third entry. Sulfur belonged to active transformation and reactive work, but his first explanation was formal enough that Severin made him say it again.

”It helps make something else change.”

”Better.”

From the shelf, Neumann took several empty training tins and set them on Severin’s bench.

”Show me the freight.”

Severin moved the tins into two rough rows. Twelve crates had been in the locked wagon, all smaller than ordinary freight. Four were chained twice and sealed with lead at the links, while the rest had metal clasps. The marked cargo had gone to warehouse three even though the manifest sent ordinary freight to warehouse two.

More tins came down from the shelf as he talked.

He built the chalked storage area as best he could, leaving gaps between the boxes. Pike had checked the numbers at the door. The guard had kept hooks off the iron bands and made them lift the marked crates instead of rolling or dragging them.

Neumann pointed at the row. ”Which four were chained?”

Severin looked at the arrangement he had made.

”Four of them. Couldn’t tell you which four now.”

”Don’t guess.”

He left the tins as they were.

The exercise had changed without anyone announcing it. Rafael compared the remembered marks with printed examples while Martin checked another reference. Anna went back to her own bench, though she still listened from nearby. Paul caught a mismatch in one of the diagrams and corrected his placement before returning to the sorting exercise.

Rafael turned one of the books toward Severin. The legitimate examples never showed the broad symbols by themselves. Smaller marks and lines explained how they related to one another, how the material was prepared or added some other qualifier depending on the use.

Severin looked at the clean space on his slate where the hooked mark had been.

The three shapes he remembered were real. Together, they still did not explain what the markings meant.

Martin checked another example and came to the same problem. ”If they wanted anyone to understand this, they left half of it out.”

”Unless the missing marks were the important part.”

Martin looked back at the page.

Neumann took an older, thinner volume from the wall rack and worked through its index. Severin watched him compare two pages against the slate, then a third.

Nothing in the older volume matched the markings cleanly. Neumann closed it. ”Could be workshop shorthand or a private system. Maybe somebody copied notation they didn’t fully understand.”

Severin looked at the tins on the bench and remembered how carefully the Blackhaven handlers had treated the crates.

The wagon had been locked under guard, and Pike had changed the warehouse despite the manifest. Inside, the marked crates were carried instead of dragged and kept apart within chalk lines.

”Someone knew how those crates were supposed to be handled.”

”That part’s solid.” Neumann pointed at him. ”Just don’t tell me what Pike knew.”

Severin adjusted one of the tins back into line. Pike had watched the boxes harder than he watched the men. The guard had stepped in whenever someone handled them wrong. Those were the facts he still trusted.

Neumann studied the slate before looking over the tins Severin had arranged.

The three remembered glyphs came from legitimate alchemical notation, and their ordinary meanings fit some of what Severin had seen in the shipment. The handling made sense. The missing marks still left too much unknown.

They did not know who painted the symbols or where the notation came from. Severin could not remember whether every marked crate carried the same markings, and the missing strokes might have changed their meaning.

Neumann slid the slate back across the bench to Severin.

”Do it again. Only put down what you’re sure of.”

Severin wiped the slate and drew 🜕 and 🜔 before adding 🜍.

His hand moved toward the empty space beside them.

He almost remembered the hooked stroke, cramped against dark timber in brown-red paint, but not clearly enough to draw it.

He lowered the chalk. ”That’s it.”

Neumann took the slate. ”Good. I’ll pass it on.”

The others went back to the morning exercise. Martin carried his packet back to his place, and Rafael reopened the page he had been working from before Severin drew their attention.

Severin picked up the brown jar again, and this time the symbol looked like an instruction.

He checked the handling note once more and put the jar in the separate tray.

Neumann said nothing.

By the bell, Severin had sorted six containers without Neumann stopping him again. Rafael was already done, and Anna had needed only one correction. Paul beat Severin through the final diagram check despite spending several minutes swearing at an index entry that sent him to the wrong page.

Severin enjoyed that far too much.

At the bell, Neumann began collecting the books. ”Training hall tomorrow at first bell. Leave the references here.”

Martin shut his copy with obvious relief while Severin flexed his cramped writing hand and looked toward the door.

Wooden swords sounded almost fucking pleasant.
