HG-06: TECHNOLOGY, TRAVEL AND COMMUNICATION THE HOLLOW GOSPEL CODEX

The known world is heavily industrialized and increasingly connected.

Railways cross large parts of the major powers, while steamships connect their ports. Motor carriages are established machines rather than experimental curiosities, and telegraph networks allow urgent information to travel far faster than the person who sent it.

Access varies sharply between places.

A wealthy district may have electric street lighting while poorer streets nearby still depend upon gas. A traveler leaving a major railway route can soon find roads where horses and wagons remain more practical than engines.

Remote forts and islands may receive information through several stages of relay before a message reaches its destination.

Technology must therefore be understood locally. What is ordinary in Kronvaal may be unavailable in an isolated village.

POWER AND LIGHT

Coal remains central to industry and transport.

It fuels steam machinery and many of the ships that move between the great powers. Industrial centers depend upon regular supplies for factories and transport infrastructure.

Gas lighting remains in use throughout the present era.

Electric lighting has also become established, although coverage is uneven. In Blackhaven, electric globes appear in wealthier districts while other streets still rely upon gas lamps.

Vhaldrik makes extensive use of modern infrastructure in its major cities and state facilities.

Electricity is established technology, but universal access has not been achieved.

RAILWAYS

Rail is the principal method of rapid overland travel across long distances where suitable lines exist.

Passenger trains connect important population centers. Freight and military traffic use the same wider railway system to move supplies or personnel over distances that would take far longer by road.

Major stations can be enormous institutions in their own right.

Kronvaal Central handles civilian traffic alongside military movement and government inspection. The city also possesses an elevated railway system.

Vhaldrik has the most developed railway organization among the four great powers. Its transport network forms an important part of Imperial administration and military planning.

Rail travel still depends upon functioning infrastructure. Weather and damaged track can interrupt a route, while military restrictions or local conditions may prevent ordinary passage.

Reaching a railway line can also be difficult in remote territory.

URBAN TRANSPORT

Large cities possess transport systems unavailable in much of the countryside.

Trams operate in developed urban centers, including Kronvaal and cities within Solmara.

Motor cabs are also established in major cities. Horse drawn vehicles continue to share the same streets, and carts remain essential for ordinary freight.

The presence of newer machinery has therefore not removed older forms of transport.

Walking remains a normal part of city life, particularly where public routes do not reach a person’s destination.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Motor carriages are established vehicles in the present era.

They are used for private travel and hired transport. Governments and organizations such as the Blinded Crown can also employ them when an operation requires movement by road.

A person familiar with machinery can drive one without the vehicle being treated as an unusual invention.

Road conditions remain important.

A motor carriage is most useful where maintained roads and repair facilities exist. Difficult terrain or mechanical failure can make older transport more practical.

Horses and wagons therefore remain common throughout the known world.

The Blinded Crown uses motor transport when it suits the route but does not assume that a vehicle can reach every destination.

TRAVEL BY SEA

Sea travel remains essential to international movement.

Commercial ships connect the principal ports and provide ordinary passage between countries separated by water. Smaller communities depend upon fishing vessels or coastal craft, while national governments maintain military fleets.

Steam propulsion is well established.

Some modern vessels also retain sail as supplementary propulsion. The Aethermerian Crown cutter Vigilant Gale, for example, is a steel hull vessel driven by a coal fired steam engine and screw propeller, with supporting fore and aft sail.

Aethermere possesses the strongest navy among the four great powers and maintains an extensive merchant fleet. Shipping is therefore central to both its economy and international movement.

Machinery has not removed the danger of the sea. Storms remain serious threats, and a damaged vessel can lose the advantages its engines normally provide.

Reefs and difficult approaches continue to demand experienced crews.

TELEGRAPHY

The telegraph is the fastest established method of sending information across long distances.

Governments and military forces use telegraph networks wherever suitable lines exist. Railways depend upon the same broad communications technology, and the Blinded Crown makes use of it when speed matters.

Sensitive messages can be transmitted in code.

A distant Warden may send an urgent telegram toward Kronvaal while a complete written report follows later. Where no direct line is available, somebody may first have to carry the message to the nearest telegraph station.

Telegraphy is fast once access to the network has been reached.

The network itself remains physical.

Lines can be damaged or deliberately cut, leaving isolated regions dependent upon slower methods.

LETTERS AND COURIERS

Written correspondence remains indispensable.

Telegrams are suited to short and urgent information. Detailed operational reports and legal records still travel in physical form, as do maps or other documents that cannot be reduced to a brief transmission.

Official papers may also require signatures and seals.

Mail can move by train or ship after reaching an established route. Couriers are used where ordinary delivery would be too slow or where sensitive material requires controlled custody.

The Blinded Crown relies heavily upon sealed correspondence because supernatural investigations often produce more information than a telegram can safely or clearly convey.

A report may therefore arrive well after the first warning of the incident it describes.

TELEPHONES

Telephones are not part of the established communications system of the present era.

An officer at a distant fort cannot call Kronvaal for immediate instructions. A Warden in another city cannot telephone the Order temple for an answer.

Urgent messages depend upon telegraph access or physical delivery.

This delay matters during emergencies. Local personnel may be forced to make decisions before senior authority can be consulted.

AVIATION

Practical air travel does not exist.

Vhaldrik conducts dangerous experiments with aircraft prototypes as part of its wider engineering research. These machines have not developed into a usable transport system.

There are no scheduled passenger routes or operational military air fleets. The Blinded Crown likewise has no aircraft available for routine travel.

Long distance movement remains dependent upon roads and railways on land, with ships required wherever geography makes sea passage necessary.

FIREARMS

Firearms are established weapons throughout the known world.

Rifles are common military weapons. Pistols and revolvers are also familiar sidearms among soldiers, investigators, and others whose work requires them.

The great powers maintain heavier military armaments as part of their armed forces. Vhaldrik is particularly advanced in weapons manufacturing and military industry.

The Blinded Crown uses conventional weapons beside supernatural gifts.

A marked operative has little reason to spend the strength required by a pact when an ordinary weapon can solve the same problem safely.

Firearms still depend upon ammunition and mechanical reliability. They are also of limited value against supernatural targets whose bodies do not behave like human ones.

Order training therefore treats them as tools rather than universal solutions.

MEDICINE

The known world possesses trained physicians and surgeons. Professional nursing is also established.

The quality of care depends greatly upon location and available resources. A major city can support specialists and institutional medical facilities that would be impossible to maintain in an isolated community.

Surgery is established practice.

Medical personnel use specialized instruments and maintain written case records. The Blinded Crown also employs medical staff familiar with injuries caused by field operations and the physical consequences of pact use.

Microscopy exists and can be used for scientific or medical investigation when suitable equipment is available.

Such equipment is not carried everywhere. A field team may have to take samples elsewhere for proper examination or work with whatever facilities exist locally.

Medicine retains severe limits. Blood loss and serious infection remain dangerous, while catastrophic injuries can kill despite competent treatment. Supernatural damage may introduce problems for which ordinary medicine has no established answer.

Marked healers exist within the Blinded Crown, but their abilities do not replace conventional medical care. Their gifts remain subject to personal costs and practical limits.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

Scientific research is an established profession.

Universities and technical schools train specialists for medicine or industry, while state institutions support research when it serves national interests.

Vhaldrik leads the known world in engineering and communications. Its strength also extends to armaments and industrial organization, supported by technical education and state investment in research.

Aethermere is a major industrial power with particular strength in shipbuilding and maritime engineering. Its naval and merchant fleets depend upon a large supporting industrial base.

Solmara possesses a strong academic culture. Valmont is home to the most prestigious university in the known world, while developed Solmaran cities make extensive use of modern civic infrastructure.

Dorvak varies considerably between its eight countries. Ferrovia has a strong engineering tradition and heavy industry, while several maritime states possess considerable technical experience connected to ships and ports.

Modern technology is not distributed evenly inside any of these countries. A sophisticated laboratory can exist within the same nation as settlements with limited access to utilities.

THE BLINDED CROWN AND TECHNOLOGY

The Blinded Crown uses ordinary technology whenever it improves an operation.

Operatives can travel aboard normal trains or commercial ships when dedicated transport is unnecessary. Telegraph lines carry urgent instructions, while motor vehicles can shorten suitable road journeys.

Most Order investigations also depend upon conventional equipment.

Maps and measuring tools can establish what should physically exist at a site. Microscopy can identify structures invisible to the naked eye, while electrical testing may reveal whether supposedly separated spaces are physically connected.

Physical samples and written records can answer questions that supernatural gifts cannot.

This is especially important when the nature of an incident is still unknown.

Pacts supplement investigation rather than replacing it.

TRAVEL AND DISTANCE

Industrial transport has made the known world smaller without making distance irrelevant.

A journey between major cities may combine railway and sea passage. Reaching the final destination can still require a motor carriage, wagon, or substantial travel on foot.

Remote islands depend heavily upon shipping schedules and weather.

Frontier forts may have rail or telegraph connections nearby without possessing every service inside their walls.

A damaged road or severed telegraph line can therefore change an operation before any supernatural threat becomes involved.

The Blinded Crown plans around routes as carefully as it plans around the threat itself.

ORDER REFERENCE

Field personnel should establish available infrastructure before assuming that equipment or communication can be obtained locally.

A telegram may cross hundreds of miles rapidly, yet somebody could first spend hours reaching a working telegraph station. A motor carriage may shorten a road journey until terrain or damage makes further travel impossible.

The nearest well equipped hospital can still be several stages of travel away from the people who need it.

Technology expands the Blinded Crown’s options without eliminating the limits imposed by distance, infrastructure, and time.
