I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

The pup’s scream came first — not the howl of a wolf in pain, but the whimper of a child who had reached for something that was no longer there.

Maeve was on her feet before the sound finished, crashing through the heather toward the edge of the Glen Affric settlement. Young Robbie, barely twelve years old, three months into his first shifts, was on his knees in the dirt. His hands were half-shifted — the right still human, the left twisted into a malformed claw that should by now have been a full paw. His face was slick with sweat, veins standing under skin that flickered between pale boy-flesh and silver-grey fur.

”I can’t —” he gasped. ”I can’t finish it. Something’s wrong. Something’s—”

Maeve dropped beside him and pressed her palm flat to his chest. Beneath his ribs, where the bloodline energy should have pulsed hot and steady, she felt something that made her stomach clench. The warmth was there, yes, but thinned — the way water leaves a barrel with the bung pulled, half the contents already run out.

”Hold the shift,” she commanded, her voice carrying the Alpha resonance that brooked no argument. ”Don’t fight it. Don’t push. Let it settle.”

Robbie’s breathing slowed. His left hand reformed, fingers straightening one by one, the fur receding. But the look in his eyes — the raw, animal terror of a wolf who could not become a wolf — was something Maeve knew she would carry for a long time.

She stood and swept her divine sense outward across the settlement. Twenty-three wolves under her direct protection, scattered through the glen in dens and cottages. She touched each bloodline signature in turn, feeling for the pulse that marked them as her pack.

What she found made her jaw tighten.

Every wolf under fifteen was weakened. Not dangerously — not yet — but the thinning was unmistakable, a collective dimming of the bloodline fire that had burned in their veins since the first wolf of their line was blessed by moonlight. And at the other end of the span, old Cormac, who had survived seventy-three Highland winters on wolf-blood alone, sat by his fire breathing like a man who had climbed a mountain.

”Maeve.” Her second, Fergus, came to her shoulder. His face was grim. ”It’s not just us. Calls from the MacKenzie pack in Strathpeffer — two elders who can’t shift at all. The Sutherland clan say the old wolf at Helmsdale collapsed mid-shift. Nearly tore himself apart.”

”When did it start?”

”Two, maybe three hours back. The timing—”

”Matches the Conclave’s barrier falling,” Maeve finished. She had felt it even this far north — the distant shattering crack of the most powerful ward in Britain coming down like glass beneath a hammer. Arthur had warned her what would follow. All energy, feeding the thing that crawled beneath the earth.

Including bloodline energy.

Maeve closed her eyes. The Remnant had reached Scotland.

She called the gathering for noon, at the standing stones above Loch Ness. Neutral ground — old ground, soaked in the residual energy of centuries of druidic practice and, before that, something older. The stones themselves hummed at a frequency that made the bloodline fire in every wolf’s chest ring like a struck bell.

They came. Not willingly, and not quickly, but they came.

The Highland packs arrived first — the MacKenzies from Strathpeffer, fifteen wolves led by a grey-bearded Alpha named Douglas who had not spoken to Maeve in four years over a dispute about deer-culling rights. The Sutherland clan came from the north, nine wolves with their matriarch, old Elspeth, leaning on two grandsons because her legs had failed on the walk. The Lochaber pack, the Cairngorm pack, the small family groups from Skye and Mull and the outer islands — they came by ones and twos, shifting to human form as they neared the stones, eyeing one another with the wariness of predators forced into proximity.

Maeve stood on the largest stone, arms folded, watching them assemble. Fergus stood at its base, a wall of muscle and quiet threat. Behind them her own twenty-three — the Glen Affric pack — formed a loose semicircle, every wolf in half-shift, ears flat, eyes sharp.

By noon there were sixty-seven wolves in the clearing. Every pack in Scotland, represented.

Silence fell when Maeve raised her hand.

”You know why I’ve called you,” she said. Her voice carried without effort, the Alpha resonance filling the space between the stones and bouncing off the loch below. ”The bloodline is weakening. Our pups can’t shift. Our elders are collapsing. Something is draining the energy that makes us what we are.”

”It’s the English’s problem,” growled Douglas MacKenzie. ”Whatever’s happening down south—”

”It’s already here.” Maeve let the words land like stones dropped in still water. ”Robbie MacIntosh — twelve years old — tried to shift this morning and couldn’t finish the change. Cormac Fraser can barely breathe. Elspeth Sutherland needed her grandsons to walk her to these stones.” She paused. ”This is not coming. It has arrived.”

A murmur ran through the wolves. Maeve saw old grudges flicker across faces — a Sutherland wolf glaring at a MacKenzie, a Cairngorm Alpha stiffening at the nearness of a Lochaber rival. Centuries of blood feuds and pack politics, all straining against the unspoken truce of the gathering.

”I spoke with Arthur Pendleton three days ago,” Maeve went on. ”A Soul Formation cultivator — a Chinese tradition, but he understands what we face. The entity beneath Britain doesn’t only absorb magic. It absorbs bloodline energy. The thing that makes us wolves. The thing in our bones, in our children’s bones, in every wolf that will ever be born on this island.” She swept her gaze across the clearing. ”If we do nothing, there will be no wolves in Scotland by the next moon.”

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

”Then what do you propose?” Elspeth Sutherland’s voice was thin but steady. She sat on a stone her grandsons had draped with a blanket, white hair catching the wind. ”We are weakened, Maeve. If we fight this thing—”

”We don’t fight it directly,” Maeve said. ”Energy attacks feed it. Arthur was clear on that. What we do is move. We go south. We consolidate our strength, join the larger effort, and protect the bloodline by keeping our numbers whole and putting ourselves where we’re needed.”

”South,” Douglas spat the word. ”Into England. Where the English wolves—”

”Are also dying,” Maeve cut in. ”I’ve spoken with the Yorkshire pack. They’ve lost three elders already. The Cotswold pack is scattered. There is no English wolf territory left, Douglas. Only ground that’s been drained, and ground that’s about to be.”

She let that settle. Then she stepped to the very edge of the stone and looked down at the assembled wolves — every Alpha, every elder, every wolf who had come because the bloodline in their chest was flickering and fear, real wolf-fear, had found them at last.

”My pack is no longer twenty-three wolves from Glen Affric,” Maeve said, and her voice dropped into the register that made every wolf in earshot bare its throat. ”From today, all wolves in Scotland are under my protection. Anyone object?”

Silence.

Not the silence of agreement — the silence of predators calculating odds, measuring the weight of the Alpha resonance against their chests, weighing generations of independence against the cold fact of their dimming bloodlines.

Douglas MacKenzie moved first. He stepped forward, and Maeve saw the cost of it — the set of his jaw, the fists clenched at his sides. Four years of silence. Four years of refused hands and turned backs over a dispute about deer that now seemed laughably small.

He lowered his head. Not a bow — wolves did not bow — but a tilt, the baring of a throat that was the oldest gesture of submission in their bloodline tongue.

”The MacKenzie pack stands with you,” he said. His voice was rough. ”For the pups.”

Elspeth Sutherland was next, and she did not hesitate. ”The Sutherland clan has stood six hundred years. It will not fall because we were too proud to walk beside each other.” She looked at Douglas with a century of shared history in her eyes. ”Even MacKenzies.”

One by one they came forward. Isobel, the scarred Lochaber Alpha who had killed the previous Cairngorm Alpha in a dispute fifteen years past, stepped up beside her old enemy and said nothing — stood there, shoulder to shoulder, the gesture louder than words. Hamish, old Cairngorm Alpha, looked at her a long moment, then grunted and turned to face the gathering at her side.

The island wolves — the small fierce families from Skye and Mull who had kept to themselves for generations — came last. Their matriarch, a weathered woman named Catriona, simply nodded once. ”Skye has always been isolated. It seems that time is over.”

Maeve watched them assemble below her stone and felt something she had not expected. Not triumph — she had won nothing. Not relief — the danger was only growing. What she felt was weight. The weight of sixty-seven wolf-lives settling onto her shoulders, bloodlines and futures and children not yet born, all of it hers to carry now.

She bore it the way her ancestors had borne the moonlight — without flinching.

”We move at dusk,” she said. ”Full half-shift. Travel formation — scouts at the edges, elders and pups in the centre. Great Glen south, then the A9 corridor. Fergus will set positions.” She looked at them one last time. ”We run together. All of us. Whatever comes, we face it as one pack.”

They ran at dusk, as Maeve had ordered.

It was a sight not seen in Scotland for three hundred years. Sixty-seven wolves in half-shift, pouring through the Great Glen like a silver river, caught between human and beast — upright but powerful, fur rippling along shoulders and backs, eyes glowing amber and gold in the failing light. The elders ran with the young, MacKenzies beside Sutherlands, island wolves matched stride for stride with the Highland packs.

The glen itself seemed to acknowledge them. Ancient stones they passed hummed in time with their footfalls. The heather bent away from their path, pressed aside as by an unseen wind. A stag on the ridge above watched them with wide terrified eyes, then fled the other way.

Maeve ran at the front, Fergus at her right shoulder, Douglas — Douglas, who had not spoken to her in four years — at her left. Behind them, in a loose diamond, the packs moved with a coordination that surprised even Maeve. Whatever they carried, the bloodline knew what it meant to run together. The old instincts, buried under generations of isolation, surfaced like groundwater finding a new channel.

They covered forty miles before midnight. The weakened — the pups, the elders — rode in the centre, flanked by the stronger. When old Cormac stumbled, a young Lochaber wolf was at his side before Maeve could turn, steadying him without a word.

At a stream crossing near Dalwhinnie, Maeve called a halt. The wolves gathered at the water, drinking, resting, their breathing a low collective rumble that filled the night.

Fergus came to her side. ”They’re holding together better than I expected.”

”They’re wolves,” Maeve said. ”When the pack runs, the pack runs. What they were yesterday doesn’t matter. The wolf beside them now does.”

”And tomorrow?”

Maeve looked south. Beyond the dark line of the Cairngorms, past the central belt and the English border, the thing draining their bloodline was growing. She could feel it now — a subtle pull, a tide drawing water off the shore. Every mile south brought it closer, the pull stronger.

”Tomorrow we cross into England,” she said. ”And we find out what we’re really made of.”

They crossed the border at dawn.

The change was immediate. The moment Maeve’s paws touched English soil, the pull sharpened — a sucking at her bloodline, invisible fingers drawing the energy out through her chest. Behind her, wolves gasped; she felt the formation tighten as the weaker ones stumbled.

But something else happened too.

As the pull strengthened, her bloodline answered. Not by diminishing — by surging. The fire in her chest, flickering uncertainly since yesterday, roared back to life, burning hotter and brighter than it had in years. Her muscles tightened. Her senses sharpened. The wolf in her rose to meet the threat with a ferocity that surprised her.

She looked back. Fergus was grinning — actually grinning — his half-shifted form rippling with renewed power. Douglas MacKenzie stood straighter than he had in months; the grey in his beard seemed less. Even old Cormac, riding in the centre, had colour in his cheeks.

”The threat is making us stronger,” Maeve breathed. She did not understand it. Bloodline energy was not meant to work that way — a finite thing, passed down generations, spent by use and age. It did not surge at danger.

But it did. Every wolf in the formation stood taller, ran harder, the bloodline fire burning brighter the nearer they drew to the source of the drain.

It was as if their bloodline — ancient, primal, shaped by millennia of survival against things that had wanted wolves dead — recognized the Remnant as a threat and answered the only way it knew how.

By making them more wolf.

Maeve felt the pull again, harder now, dragging at her chest like a hook set deep in muscle. And beneath it — beneath the drain, beneath the fear, beneath the weight of sixty-seven wolves on her shoulders — she felt her bloodline rise to meet it. Savage. Ancient. Unyielding.

She bared her teeth at the southern horizon, where she knew the Remnant waited.

”Come on, then,” she growled, and the word came out between human speech and howl. ”Try to take what’s ours.”

Behind her, sixty-seven wolves howled in answer — and the sound rolled across the border like thunder.

Maeve ran on, teeth bared, and knew the Remnant would answer the challenge. It always had. The only question left was whether sixty-seven wolves would be enough to make it bleed.
