I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

He came from the east, riding a sword of pale jade across a sky the colour of wet slate, and every supernatural being in Britain felt him arrive — a pulse of raw power that set old blood beating in vampire veins and ancient wards trembling in their stone.

A Soul Formation cultivator in flight was not a quiet event. The lingqi radiating from a fully powered dantian, channelled through a flying sword at altitude, was roughly the energy signature of a flare in a dark room. In China, where spirit veins dotted the landscape and cultivators were thick as plum blossoms, this was unremarkable. In Britain, where ambient lingqi was so thin a Qi Refining cultivator would struggle to light a candle, it was apocalyptic.

Li Wei descended through the cloud layer over the Lake District at nine hundred miles an hour, and the pressure wave of his passage struck the ground like a soundless thunderclap.

In London, four hundred and fifty kilometres south, Marcus Thorne stopped mid-stride.

He was in a basement car park beneath the O2, directing the last of the Undercity evacuation, his dark energy threaded through the building, monitoring every shadow and heartbeat in three blocks. Then the wave passed through him. Not the Remnant’s pulse — he knew that rhythm. This was different: sharp, clean, a spike of lingqi so dense it cut through the ambient field like a blade through gauze. His dark energy recoiled, wrapped around his core in a defensive reflex two and a half millennia old.

Not the Remnant. Something that felt like the man on the museum rooftop — but different. Warmer. Heavier. Coming from the north.

Another one.

In Glen Affric, Maeve MacKenzie looked up.

She stood in the glen four-legged, fur bristling, the pack of twenty-three pressed close against the pre-dawn cold. The Remnant’s pulse had reached Scotland hours ago, a distant vibration. This was not that. This was a pressure, a weight in the air that pressed against fur and skin and bone. Not hostile — she would have smelled hostility the way wolves smell fire. Simply present: a force of nature passing overhead, the way a storm front passes over a mountain. You did not fight it, did not flee it. You stood in it and waited.

Maeve raised her muzzle but did not howl — this was not a thing to howl at. Twenty-three pairs of amber eyes fixed on the southern sky, where something immense and bright and utterly foreign was descending.

The pressure passed. The air tasted different. Charged, alive with an energy her bloodline could not name but recognised on a primal level.

Power. The kind that existed before wolves, before vampires, before mages. The kind that had rules.

In Oxford, Eleanor Whitmore’s teacup shattered.

She sat in the ruins of her study — wards down, substrate still vibrating — drinking tea because she was British and the world was ending and some rituals mattered more than apocalypses. The wave hit: lingqi, concentrated, refined, pressurised, radiating from a source so powerful that her dulled senses lit up like a switchboard. The cup shattered in her grip; hot tea ran over her fingers. She did not feel it.

”A second one,” she whispered. ”A second Soul Formation. In Britain.”

The Conclave’s backup array was screaming — every surviving sensor registering a signature off every scale they had been built to measure. Two Soul Formation cultivators in Britain at the same time. Eleanor had spent two centuries cataloguing every known energy type and being; she was now certain, with a certainty that sat in her stomach like a stone, that everything she knew was insufficient.

Arthur felt him coming from three hundred kilometres away.

Not detectably — unmistakably. A thread of recognition deeper than divine sense: the resonance of lineage, two cultivators of the same tradition, the same mountain, the same master, their signatures harmonised by decades of shared practice.

Arthur stood outside the cave entrance on the flank of Scafell Pike, wind pulling at his tweed. He had flown from London at dawn, leaving the museum in Thomas’s nervous care, because this was where Li Wei would land, and this was where the spirit vein was.

He felt the signature crest the horizon — warmer than his own, broader, less refined but more powerful, the difference between a rapier and a broadsword. Seven hundred years of cultivation. Soul Formation, peak stage. The most powerful cultivator he had ever known personally, and the only person in the world who called him junior brother.

The sword appeared first — a streak of pale jade against grey, descending at a speed that cracked the air. Then the figure: dark robes, hair streaming, one hand extended, the other holding a qiankun bag bulging with its contents.

Li Wei landed with the controlled precision of a man who had been landing on mountains for seven centuries — a pulse of lingqi absorbing the impact into the bedrock. The grass flattened. A Herdwick sheep looked up with bovine indifference and returned to breakfast.

”Senior brother,” Arthur said.

”Junior brother.” Li Wei sheathed his sword.

They looked at each other: two men in the British wind, on a mountain with no lingqi, above a spirit vein that should not exist, facing a problem that had no solution. Li Wei was taller, broader, his face worn rather than aged — stone worn by wind. Seven hundred years of mountain living had given him a permanence that made Arthur look almost soft.

”You’ve made quite a mess,” Li Wei said.

”The Remnant made the mess.”

”Mm. I have read your transmissions.” A pause — the look of a senior brother who knew his junior brother of four hundred years and knew exactly when he was being evasive. ”You are certain it is a Remnant?”

”Certain.”

”You are certain you did not cause this yourself?”

”Certain! I was reinforcing the seal—”

”Reinforcing the seal. With Palm Thunder.”

”That was an accident.”

”In the cultivation world,” Li Wei said, with the patient, exasperated tone of a man delivering a familiar lecture, ”the number of people who reinforce seals with Palm Thunder is one. That is you, junior brother.”

”The seal was already failing. The Palm Thunder was meant to supplement the lingqi flow. The frequency alignment was—”

”An accident. Yes. You mentioned.” Li Wei walked past him toward the cave. ”In seven hundred years I have seen seals broken with swords, fists, spiritual pressure, and a particularly creative fire talisman whose details remain classified by the elders. Reinforcing a seal with Palm Thunder is a new one. Even for you.”

Arthur followed him in. ”The Remnant was already breaking free. I accelerated the timeline by, at most, a few years.”

”A few years.” Li Wei set the qiankun bag on the stone and unpacked with the efficiency of a man preparing for a long campaign: formation flags by the dozen, jade handles with silk streamers, script glowing faint in the cave light; bundled talisman papers in oilcloth; high-grade spirit stones, each a century in the making, pulsing with condensed lingqi; jade vials of medicine sealed with wax; and books — scrolls, bamboo slips, bound volumes, a small library of the Azure Lotus sect’s archived knowledge, reproduced by hand and carried seven thousand kilometres on a flying sword.

Li Wei had not come empty-handed. He had brought the combined resources of one of the oldest cultivation sects in the world.

”The seal was failing,” he said, expression softening. ”You tried to fix it. The method was creative, but the intent was correct. And if you had not been there, it might have broken free weeks ago. You bought time. Just not as much as we need.”

”Thank you, senior brother.”

”Thank the elders. They authorised the resources; I just carried them.” He pulled out a copper kettle, dented and ancient. ”Now. Tea. And then we work.”

Arthur made tea while Li Wei set up — the archive spread across the cave floor in a categorical system: formation theory left, history right, sealed-entity profiles centre, and the Lushan file, a thick bundle of bamboo slips tied with faded silk, directly before the stone that served as a table.

Arthur set two cups of Earl Grey on the stone. Li Wei sipped and grimaced.

”This is terrible.”

”It’s Earl Grey.”

”It is terrible. The mountain tea is better. I should have brought mountain tea.”

”It would not have survived the flight. You were flying at nine hundred miles an hour.”

”I could have insulated the qiankun bag.”

”You could have. You didn’t. Drink the Earl Grey.”

Li Wei drank the Earl Grey, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand — centuries of mountain cultivator, zero years of British museum researcher — and pulled the Lushan file toward him.

”Let me show you what I found.” He unrolled the slips, pre-Han script in the early Azure Lotus brush. He pointed to a passage on the third slip. ”The summary I gave you over the talisman was incomplete. The full record is here.”

It described a Soul Formation cultivator named Jiang Yunfeng. Three thousand years ago, when the Lushan Remnant first emerged, he had attacked it directly — full power, his entire dantian through his flying sword. The Remnant had absorbed the attack. All of it. Not deflected, not resisted — absorbed, the way the ocean absorbs rain. And then it had reached back.

Jiang Yunfeng’s dantian had been drained, not damaged: Soul Formation to Nascent Soul, to Golden Core, to Foundation Establishment, the descent stopping only when the pull met the irreducible minimum that could not be taken without killing him. Not mercy — efficiency. The energy required to crack a Foundation core exceeded what the Remnant would gain; it had done the arithmetic and moved on.

Jiang Yunfeng survived, broken — four hundred years of cultivation stripped in seconds, three hundred more to recover. By the time he returned to Soul Formation, the Remnant had been sealed by four others. He spent the rest of his life studying it, and left notes.

”The Remnant does not fight. It feeds. Every attack is a meal. Every defender is a source. The more power you bring against it, the more you give it. I was the strongest of my generation. I struck it with everything I had. It thanked me by eating my cultivation and using it to grow.”

Arthur set down the slip. ”So our attacks—”

”Make it stronger. Every strike, every pulse — anything with an energy component, it absorbs. And not just the energy: the information, the structure, the pattern. Every attack teaches it something new about us.”

”Then we cannot fight it.”

”Not the way we fight everything else — energy against energy, power against power. That is feeding it.” Li Wei picked up his tea, sipped, grimaced. ”We need an approach that does not involve energy.”

”Physical force?”

”Its core is three hundred metres underground. We can reach it. But physical force against an energy entity is punching the wind.”

”Formation isolation?”

”Possible. But Lushan required four Soul Formation cultivators, and the seal failed after two thousand years. We have two — and the Remnant has already shown it can learn formation structures.”

”Then we need a formation it cannot learn.”

Li Wei set down his cup and looked at Arthur with the expression of a senior brother who had just heard his junior say something either very stupid or very brilliant.

”That is either the worst idea you have ever had or the best. I am not sure which.”

”Neither am I.”

”Good. At least you are honest.” He pulled the Lushan file closer. ”Before we design anything, we need to understand what we are dealing with. Fully. How is your divine sense?”

”Diminished. Three per cent less than yesterday.”

”Can you still scan the boundary?”

”Yes. Not the core.”

”Then we work with the boundary. Show me everything — the spread pattern, the signature, the absorption rate. Everything.”

Arthur sat across from him: two Soul Formation cultivators, on a mountain in the Lake District, surrounded by formation flags and spirit stones and the accumulated knowledge of a two-thousand-year-old tradition, drinking terrible Earl Grey, preparing to analyse an entity that predated the universe.

”Where do you want me to start?”

Li Wei looked at him. ”From the beginning.”
