I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

The Conclave had met in emergency session only four times in three hundred years.

The first was during the Blitz, when a bombing raid cracked a ward stone beneath St Paul’s and seven Grand Magi spent six hours debating whether to repair the ward or evacuate the ley network before the next raid found it. The second was in 1967, when a rogue Grand Magus tried to unmake the Veil itself and the session lasted eleven minutes, because there was nothing left to debate — only to survive. The third was three months ago, when Eleanor reported the existence of a Chinese cultivator in London.

The fourth was now.

Seven chairs in a semicircle. Seven blocks of Welsh slate warded with three-century enchantments. Crystallised mana glowing violet in the walls. The air tasted of ozone and old paper and something newer: the faint acrid tang of fear.

Archmagus Cornelius Thorne sat in the centre chair as tradition demanded. Silver robes immaculate. Posture correct. Face composed into the expression of controlled authority that had served him for forty years — the disappointed hawk, the man who had held the Conclave together through institutional inertia and the quiet relentless pressure of his own will. His hands rested on the arms of his chair, steady, composed, exactly where they were supposed to be.

His hands were shaking.

He had folded them to hide it. Eleanor, standing at the centre of the semicircle with her projections burning on the wall behind her, could see the tremor in his fingers: the tiny involuntary vibration of a man holding himself together by will alone, whose will was beginning to fracture.

She understood. She had felt the same fracture twenty minutes ago, when she finished running the numbers.

”Continue, Grand Magus Whitmore,” Thorne said. Level. The voice of a man who would not permit the room to see what his hands were doing.

She touched her notes. A map of southern England bloomed on the wall, overlaid with luminous lines — the Conclave’s wards, monitoring stations, ley anchors, detection arrays. Three centuries of magical engineering spread across the Home Counties like a web.

Three of the lines were dark.

”As of six o’clock this evening, the Remnant has absorbed the magical energy from three southern monitoring stations. Greenwich. Canterbury. Brighton. All three went dark inside forty-eight hours. The stations are physically intact — equipment, ward stones, crystal arrays — but the substrate that powered them is drained. Completely. There is nothing left to monitor with.”

A graph appeared. A downward curve, steep and accelerating.

”More concerning is the rate. Two weeks ago, when it began drawing magical energy, the loss was negligible — point-zero-one per cent of network capacity per day, below our threshold for regional variance. A week ago, point-three. Three days ago, one-point-two. As of this morning—”

She paused. The curve was not linear. It was exponential.

”—four-point-seven per cent per day. And accelerating.”

Seven people did arithmetic in their heads and did not like the result.

Grand Magus Alderton spoke first. The youngest of the seven, barely ninety, his voice carrying the steadiness of a man who had already accepted what he was about to say. ”At four-point-seven daily, with exponential growth — how long until the southern network is depleted?”

”Eleven days. Twelve if the growth slows. Nine if it continues to accelerate.”

”And the defensive wards around London?”

”Included in the calculation. They draw from the same substrate. When the substrate is gone, the wards will fail. Not weaken. Fail.”

Blackwood shifted. ”Reinforcement? Can we channel additional energy in?”

”From where? The northern network is at capacity holding the Scottish wards. The western feeds the Welsh leys. We could draw on both and leave Scotland and Wales undefended — and the absorption range is expanding. In a week it reaches the northern network.”

Thorne’s voice cut the silence. Controlled, precise: the voice of a man refusing to acknowledge the trajectory of the graph. ”The Conclave has faced magical crises before. The 1967 incident depleted our reserves by forty per cent and we recovered. The Veil Fracture of 1842 compromised every ward in southern England and we rebuilt. This is concerning. It is not unprecedented. Our resources are considerable, our tradition three centuries deep—”

”Archmagus.”

The voice was dry. Leaves in autumn. Stone on stone. Three hundred and twelve years of patience reaching its end.

Grand Magus Aubrey had not spoken all session. He had sat in his chair like a geological formation. Now he stirred, and the room’s attention shifted to him the way iron filings shift toward a magnet.

”Three hundred years,” Aubrey said. ”Seven Grand Magi. Our barrier network — three centuries’ finest achievement, the most sophisticated magical defence in the Western world.” He looked at Eleanor. ”You ran the simulation. The Remnant against the primary barrier network. Full strength, all seven of us channelling. How long?”

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Eleanor was quiet for a moment. The silence of a woman who knew the answer and was giving the room one final moment of not knowing.

”Four minutes, Archmagus.”

The number landed like a stone dropped into still water.

”Four minutes,” Aubrey repeated. ”Three hundred years of magical tradition. Seven Grand Magi. The combined might of the Conclave. Four minutes.”

Thorne’s hands had stopped shaking. They had gone very still — the stillness of a man shown something his framework cannot accommodate.

”That is—”

”The result of three independent simulations. Myself, Grand Magus Chen, Grand Magus Pembry, using different methodologies. The results converged within six seconds.”

She let it sit.

”Four minutes is not a defence, Archmagus. It is a measurement of how long it would take us to notice we had already lost.”

Chen sat with her eyes closed. Pembry stared at the graph. Blackwood had gone pale. Alderton’s face was set in the careful neutrality of a man who had expected this and hated being right.

Thorne said nothing for a long time. His jaw worked — the only movement in a face rigid with the effort of composure. He was a politician, a traditionalist, a man who had built his identity on the proposition that the Conclave was sufficient: that three centuries of heritage and seven Grand Magi could face any threat and endure.

Four minutes.

”What are you recommending?” The voice was still level, but something beneath the control had bent — not broken. The way steel bends before it breaks.

Eleanor looked at the seven faces, each carrying a different version of the same realisation.

”I am recommending that the Conclave formally request the assistance of Arthur Pendleton.”

The silence that followed was not surprise. It was a room that had known this was coming and had been hoping, until that exact second, that something else would present itself.

Thorne’s reaction was reflex. ”We are the Conclave. Three thousand years of magical tradition. We do not—”

”Three hundred years,” Aubrey corrected, mild as a professor with a student who has misquoted a source. ”The tradition is older, yes. Our institution — our order, our hierarchy, our barrier network — is three centuries old. And it will last four minutes.”

”Four minutes is not nothing.” Harder than he intended. ”Four minutes of full Conclave channelling is a considerable exertion. With preparation, with strategic deployment—”

”Archmagus.” Mild. Patient. Devastating. ”Four minutes is the time it takes to boil an egg.”

Eleanor spoke — not to Thorne, not to Aubrey, to the room.

”Gentlemen. We are not requesting help. We are acknowledging that in the face of this thing, we are no different from mortals.”

It landed not as insult and not as surrender. As truth: the kind that strips away titles and centuries and institutional pride and leaves only the bare fact of seven powerful beings discovering that powerful is a relative term.

Alderton stood. ”I propose a formal vote. The Conclave requests the full and active assistance of Arthur Pendleton — and through him, his senior brother Li Wei — in confronting the Remnant. Not as supplicants. Not as subordinates. As allies, acknowledging that the scale of this threat exceeds our independent capacity.”

”Seconded,” said Chen, without opening her eyes.

Thorne looked around the semicircle. Blackwood would not meet his gaze. Pembry studied his hands. Alderton stood with quiet certainty. Chen sat immovable. Aubrey watched him with an expression that was not unkind — a very old man watching a younger one confront something he had spent a lifetime refusing to see.

”All those in favour.”

Six hands rose. Alderton. Chen. Aubrey. Blackwood after three heartbeats. Pembry after five. Eleanor raised her own — not a voting member, but a Grand Magus in her own right, and the gesture was solidarity.

One hand did not rise. Thorne’s.

The Archmagus sat with his hands folded, jaw set, robes immaculate, and did not vote. The dissent of a man outmanoeuvred not by politics but by arithmetic.

”The motion passes. Six to one.” He stood. ”Grand Magus Whitmore, you will contact Mr Pendleton and convey the Conclave’s formal request. And Eleanor—”

She looked at him.

”—convey also the Conclave’s gratitude. For whatever that is worth.” Stiff. Unpractised; rusty with three centuries of disuse.

”Of course, Archmagus.”

He nodded once and walked out, silver robes whispering against the slate, back straight, pride intact — his hands, Eleanor noticed, trembling again now that they were no longer folded.

The others filed out. Blackwood and Pembry murmuring together. Chen alone, thoughtful. Alderton last, pausing at the door for a nod that carried encouragement and something that looked, in the violet light, very much like apology.

Then she was alone with the graph and its downward curve, and the number sat in the air like a stone that had not finished sinking.

She sat down — not in her own chair. In Thorne’s. The centre chair. It was still warm. She did not care about protocol.

Three hundred years. Seven Grand Magi. The entire magical tradition of the British Isles, concentrated and deployed at full strength.

Four minutes.

She thought about Arthur. Mild, tea-drinking Arthur, who had reinforced the seal for three hours without visible strain, who had described his own potential death as a detail we can address if the situation requires. Arthur, who was one man, and who was worth more than four minutes — worth more, probably, than four centuries of the Conclave’s finest work, and who either did not know that or knew and chose to be mild about it anyway.

She was not crying. Her eyes were wet, but that was the ozone, the crystallised mana, the ventilation in an underground chamber that had always been poor.

”Eleanor.”

Aubrey stood in the doorway. He had not left with the others. He had waited — three hundred and twelve years of patience teaching a man exactly how long to wait before re-entering a room where someone needed to be alone but should not be alone for long.

”You’re crying.”

”No.”

”Don’t lie to me. And don’t lie to yourself.” Not unkind: the voice of a very old man who had run out of patience for self-deception somewhere around the Napoleonic Wars. ”You’re frightened.”

She was quiet. ”Yes. I’m frightened.”

Aubrey nodded. ”So am I.”

In three hundred and twelve years she had never heard Henry Aubrey say he was frightened of anything.

”But not of the Remnant.”

She waited.

”I’m frightened of Arthur Pendleton.”

”Why?”

He took a moment, arranging words with the care of a man placing stones in a wall — each one load-bearing, each one precisely positioned.

”Because when he helps us — and he will, Eleanor, we both know it, he has already decided — we will owe him. A Soul Formation cultivator’s debt. The kind that accumulates interest in the currency of obligation, and that is a currency we cannot print.”

He looked at her.

”You cannot repay it. I cannot repay it. All seven of us, three centuries of resources and tradition — we cannot repay what a Soul Formation cultivator will be owed for saving this island. And he doesn’t know that.” A pause. ”Or he knows, and he doesn’t care. The former is more frightening.”

He looked at the empty semicircle of Welsh slate, warded with enchantments that would hold for four minutes against the thing beneath London.

”The latter is more worthy of respect.”

Eleanor sat in the Archmagus’s chair and said nothing, because there was nothing to say that Aubrey had not already said. The graph went on falling, and three hundred miles north two cultivators were designing a formation that would decide whether Britain survived the month — and until it was finished, four minutes was the most anyone in this room could offer.
