I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

Seven voices rose as one, and the sky above Greater Oxford turned to glass.

The barrier that materialized in the predawn dark was a thing of crystalline, devastating beauty — a dome of interwoven magical energy spanning thirty miles, rising from the ley-line anchors at the city’s edge like a cathedral built of light. The Myriad Barrier. 万象结界. Three centuries of magical tradition, spent in a single act of creation.

Eleanor Whitmore stood at the northern anchor, her voice woven into the chorus of seven. She could feel the other six — Thorne’s iron discipline at the centre, Aubrey’s ancient resonance, Chen’s precise clarity, Blackwood’s raw power, Pembry’s steady endurance, Alderton’s clean intensity. Seven Grand Magi, each lending a signature to a working greater than the sum of its parts.

The Myriad Barrier was not a ward. It was not a shield. It was a statement — the Conclave’s declaration that Western magic could contain anything beneath the earth. The barrier did not block energy; it transformed it. Any energy touching its inner surface was converted into reinforcing substrate, making the wall stronger with every impact. Self-sustaining. A wall that fed on the force brought against it. The pinnacle of defensive magic, and the finest thing the Conclave had made in three hundred years.

Eleanor felt it stabilize. The dome locked into place with a resonance she felt in her bones — a deep harmonic that made the standing stones in the surrounding fields hum, that rang the medieval bells in Oxford’s towers without a hand touching them. The ley network beneath the city surged. Every ward stone, every enchanted artefact, every reserve accumulated over three centuries, was pouring into the barrier. The crystallized mana in the underground chambers burned white. The air tasted of ozone and old stone and something Eleanor had not tasted in twenty-six years of Grand Magus work: magic used at its absolute limit.

This is what we are, she thought. This is what three hundred years of tradition looks like when you spend it all at once.

For one moment she let herself feel something other than dread. Pride. The barrier was magnificent. In twenty-six years she had never stood inside a working of this scale.

The barrier held. The sky was clear. The Remnant had not yet arrived.

And then, at 5:47 in the morning, it did.

Eleanor felt it before she saw it. A pressure — not physical, not magical, but something beneath both. The Remnant’s leading edge reached the southern boundary, and every Grand Magus in the circle felt it at once.

The contact was gentle. That was the worst part. The Remnant did not slam the barrier. It simply touched — lightly, curiously, the way you touch something you have never encountered before.

The barrier held. The transformation principle activated — the Remnant’s touch energy absorbed, converted, integrated. The dome glowed brighter at the point of contact. Reinforced. Stronger.

Eleanor felt a surge of hope. Brief. Immediately suppressed. The wall was feeding on the force brought against it, exactly as designed.

One minute.

The contact point spread. Not deepening — widening. The Remnant’s touch ran along the barrier’s inner surface, covering more ground. Not pushing. Exploring. The same behaviour Arthur had described: studying the structure, mapping the geometry.

The barrier held. But the rate of reinforcement no longer kept pace with the rate of contact. The transformation converted touch energy into substrate, yet the Remnant was touching faster than the conversion could process. The buffer was filling.

Like a dam built to turn floodwater into power — elegant, self-sustaining — facing not a river but an ocean. The turbines could take the river. They could not take the ocean.

Two minutes.

Eleanor felt the first structural stress. Not a crack — a vibration. A resonance that should not have been there. The transformation was generating heat, the byproduct of rapid conversion, and it was accumulating faster than the matrix could shed it. The barrier was overheating.

”Archmagus.” Her voice was steady. ”The transformation matrix is at seventy percent capacity. Rising.”

Thorne’s voice came through the link — tight, controlled, the voice of a man pouring everything into the barrier and finding that everything was not enough. ”Reinforce the southern quadrant. Draw from the northern reserves.”

”We are already drawing from the northern reserves.” She did not add: There is nothing left. The Myriad Barrier was consuming the Conclave’s entire magical infrastructure. Three hundred years of accumulation, spent in minutes.

Three minutes.

The vibration sharpened. Eleanor felt it in her teeth, in her joints. The matrix was straining — not breaking, but bending. The conversion was producing waste — energy it could not process, building like sediment in a pipe.

The Remnant was not attacking the barrier. It was feeding it. Deliberately. The touch energy was calibrated to maximize the transformation’s workload while minimizing its output. The Remnant had studied the barrier’s design — in seconds — and was supplying exactly the kind of energy the transformation was built to process. The barrier was doing what it had been made to do. And what it had been made to do was destroying it.

It’s using our own defence against us, Eleanor thought. The wall that feeds on force is being fed to death.

Three and a half minutes.

”Transformation matrix at ninety-two percent.” Her voice was still steady. She was distantly proud of that. ”Structural integrity declining. Archmagus, the barrier will not hold.”

Thorne did not answer. She could feel him through the link — pouring everything into the matrix, every ounce of power, every reserve, every stored enchantment, forty years of Archmagus authority compressed into a single act of denial. He was no longer reinforcing the barrier. He was holding it, through will alone, through the stubborn institutional pride that had defined his career — the belief that the Conclave was sufficient, that three centuries of tradition could face any threat and endure. The belief that had made him vote against asking Arthur for help, against admitting they were not enough. He was still holding to it. Even now. Even with the matrix at ninety-two percent and the dome bending and the copper taste in his mouth. Cornelius Thorne believed.

The barrier bent. The matrix screamed — a sound that lived only in the magical spectrum, inaudible to mortal ears but felt by every Grand Magus as a white-hot spike of resonance behind the eyes. Eleanor’s nose bled. She tasted copper.

Three minutes and fifty seconds.

”Matrix at ninety-eight percent. Structural failure imminent.” Eleanor’s voice was a scientist’s, delivering results. Calm. Precise. Devastating. ”All Grand Magi, prepare for—”

The barrier shattered.

It did not crack. It did not break. It shattered — the whole thirty-mile dome failing in a single, instantaneous catastrophe, like glass struck at its resonant frequency. For one fraction of a second the sky above Greater Oxford blazed with the combined brilliance of three centuries of magic — a flash of white-violet light so bright it was seen from the South Downs, from the Chilterns, from the Cotswolds. Drivers pulled over on the M40. Farmers in the Thames Valley looked up. A woman in Witney took a photograph that would later be filed as a meteorological anomaly.

Then the light was gone. Not dimmed. Not faded. Gone — consumed, absorbed, dragged into the earth faster than the eye could credit.

The release was enormous. Three hundred years of accumulated magic, loosed in a fraction of a second. The shockwave flattened trees for a mile beyond the perimeter. Every ward stone in Greater Oxford exploded — ancient stones that had stood for centuries, cracking, their enchanted cores detonating like grenades. Every artefact in the Conclave’s underground chambers detonated. The crystallized mana in the walls — three centuries of refined substrate, the slow harvest of every Grand Magus who had ever worked there — vaporized.

And the Remnant drank it all.

Not over seconds. Instantaneously. The barrier’s energy, freed by the shatter, was absorbed before the shockwave touched the ground. One moment the air was saturated with released power — dense, blinding, overwhelming. The next it was empty. Clean. Stripped. As though someone had opened a drain and the world’s magical substance had poured through it into something vast enough to swallow an ocean without notice.

Eleanor lay where the shockwave had thrown her. Her robes were scorched. Blood ran from her nose, her ears, the corners of her eyes. Her reserves were empty — not depleted, empty. The barrier had taken everything; the shatter had taken the rest. She felt hollowed, a vessel scraped clean, the magical core that had defined her for twenty-six years reduced to a faint guttering ember where a furnace had been.

She could feel the Remnant above her. Not beneath — above. The barrier’s energy had been absorbed so completely that the Remnant’s presence had expanded upward, filling the space the dome had occupied, drinking the last traces of magic from the air with the patient thirst of something that would never be full. The sky above Oxford was different. Not darker. Not lighter. Thinner — the air itself seeming to have surrendered a dimension it never knew it held.

Four minutes. The barrier had held for four minutes.

Eleanor stared at the sky. Dawn was breaking — pale October light, thin and grey. The light had a quality she could not name: a flatness, a thinness, the photons themselves seeming to carry less than they should, the Remnant’s expansion already touching the fundamental forces of the world.

Around her the other Grand Magi were stirring. Alderton was on his knees, retching. Blackwood was unconscious. Pembry sat cross-legged, staring at nothing. Chen was on her feet, barely, one hand braced against a standing stone split down the centre. Thorne was face-down in the grass.

Aubrey was standing. Of course he was. Three hundred and twelve years old, silver robes scorched, face calm, looking up at the wrong sky with an expression Eleanor recognized as acceptance.

”Four minutes,” she said. Her voice was a rasp. ”Four minutes. Three hundred years of tradition. Four minutes.”

Aubrey looked down at her. ”The simulation said four minutes. The simulation was correct.”

”The simulation said we would lose.”

”Yes.” He offered his hand and pulled her up with a strength that had nothing to do with magic — the plain physical strength of a man who had stood upright for three centuries and did not mean to stop. ”It was correct about that too.”

Eleanor stood in the wreckage and looked south. The magical substrate that had permeated the region for three hundred years was gone. Not weakened. Gone. The Myriad Barrier had consumed it all, and the Remnant had consumed the barrier, and now there was nothing between the thing beneath the earth and the sky above it.

The Conclave had just fed the Remnant three hundred years of accumulated magic. Every ward stone, every artefact, every reserve of crystallized mana. All of it. Converted into Remnant mass. Made the enemy stronger.

They had not defended against the Remnant. They had fed it.

Eleanor’s phone was cracked but functional. She called Arthur.

The connection was poor — the Remnant’s expansion was interfering with the signals, degrading them the way it degraded everything. Static. Dropout.

”Eleanor.” Arthur’s voice, three hundred miles away. Clear. Steady.

”It’s gone.” Flat. Past shock, into a clarity that was worse. ”The Myriad Barrier. Seven Grand Magi. Three centuries of reserves.”

A pause. ”How long did it hold?”

”Four minutes.”

Silence. The silence of a man who had heard the number before — in her simulations — and was now hearing it confirmed.

”The energy,” Eleanor went on. ”When the barrier shattered — all of it. Three hundred years of infrastructure. The Remnant absorbed it. Instantaneously. It did not drain over seconds. It was simply gone.”

Another pause. When Arthur spoke, his voice had changed — still mild, still steady, but heavier.

”The Remnant is stronger now.”

”Yes.”

”By how much?”

Eleanor looked at the wrong sky. ”The barrier’s energy was equal to roughly fifteen percent of the Conclave’s total historical accumulation. Three hundred years of stored power, released and consumed in under a second.”

She heard Arthur breathe — the sound of a Soul Formation cultivator taking in information that rearranged the landscape of what was possible.

”Eleanor. Are you injured?”

”Yes. Not critically.”

”The others?”

”Aubrey is standing. The rest will live. Most of them.”

”Get to cover. Get away from Oxford. The expansion will accelerate — it just absorbed a massive amount of energy. You have perhaps six hours before the absorption radius reaches the city.”

”We have nowhere to go, Arthur. The Conclave’s wards are gone. Our reserves are gone. We are—”

”Come to the Lake District.” Quiet. ”Bring whoever can travel. The spirit vein is still intact. For now.”

”For now,” she repeated.

”Eleanor.” His voice changed again. Still mild. Still steady. But something beneath it — something that, in a less controlled man, might have been fear. ”It just ate three hundred years of magic.”

She waited.

”And it is still hungry.”

The line went dead. Not disconnected — drained. The energy carrying the signal had been absorbed by the expanding Remnant field, the radio waves consumed like everything else.

Eleanor stood in the wreckage, a dead phone in her hand, and looked at the wrong sky. The worst part was not that the barrier had failed.

The worst part was that the barrier had succeeded. It had done exactly what it was designed to do — transform incoming energy into reinforcement. And the Remnant had used that success to destroy it, feeding the barrier precisely the energy it was built to process, turning the Conclave’s greatest achievement into a delivery mechanism for three hundred years of concentrated magic.

The barrier had not failed. It had been used.

Now the Remnant was stronger, the Conclave was broken, and the sky was wrong — and somewhere in the Lake District, Arthur Pendleton sat in a cave above a spirit vein being slowly tasted by something that had just eaten three centuries of Western magic and found it to be an appetizer.

Six hours, Arthur had said. Six hours before the absorption reached the city. Eleanor looked at the dead phone and wondered whether six hours would be enough to run — or whether the thing beneath the earth had already decided that for them.
