I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

Two Soul Formation cultivators sat at a formation-reinforced stone table, above an entity that was the fossil of a dead universe. Spread before them: a two-thousand-year-old formation diagram, three yellowed bamboo slips, and a thermos. The thermos contained Earl Grey.

It was stainless steel, dented from being dropped during the vampire siege, with a faded sticker reading ”British Museum Staff — 1997 Annual Quiz Night Runners-Up.” By any objective measure, the least dignified vessel ever to hold tea in the presence of two Soul Formation cultivators. Li Wei had said nothing about it. He had poured himself a cup, sipped, and this time did not grimace.

Progress.

They had been working for six hours. The Lushan file — all forty-seven bamboo slips — lay unrolled at the centre; around it, Arthur’s own observations: a hand-drawn map of the Remnant’s spread, updated hourly; charts comparing lingqi, dark energy, magic, and the Remnant’s zero-state; a timeline of the seal’s degradation cross-referenced with his readings. Li Wei had his own materials — three bound volumes of formation theory, a scroll of sealed-entity classifications, a sheaf of historical incident reports — all of it read during the flight from Kunlun, seven hundred years of cultivation having refined his recall past what any mortal could envy.

They had been through the Lushan file twice, the second time with Li Wei annotating each slip from his own experience. Now they sat back, tea cooling, holding multiple complex frameworks in simultaneous awareness — the way a mathematician holds the shape of a proof while working through it. Both had spent lifetimes learning to trust the slow accumulation of certainty; both knew that certainty was exactly what they did not yet have, and that the thing below London was not going to wait for it.

”Let me summarise,” Li Wei said. He had a habit of speaking summaries aloud; Arthur had the same habit; they had both learned it from the same master. ”Three findings, in order of significance.”

”Finding one.” He held up the first slip. ”The Remnant cannot be destroyed. Only isolated.”

He laid it down. ”Lushan was sealed three thousand years ago by four Soul Formation cultivators. The seal held two thousand years. When it failed, the Remnant did not emerge weakened. It emerged at full strength — two thousand years of containment had not diminished it, had not degraded it, had possibly only informed it about the nature of its container.”

”The four who re-sealed it—”

”Died. All four. The re-sealing succeeded, but the cost was total — dantians exhausted, meridians shattered. They survived, barely, as mortals.” Li Wei paused. ”The youngest was two hundred. She lived another fifty years in a mortal body. The records say she farmed rice.”

Arthur set down his cup: a Soul Formation cultivator, once able to reshape landscapes, kneeling in a paddy field, planting rice with hands that had channelled the fundamental forces of the universe.

”The seal they built?”

”Held. For another thousand years. Lushan is still sealed.” Li Wei leaned back. ”But here is the detail that concerns me. A follow-up assessment eight hundred years after the re-sealing found the Remnant had — the assessor’s word — ’re-coagulated.’ The seal was intact; the Remnant inside had restructured itself. Recovered.”

”Two hundred years to recover, after four Soul Formation cultivators spent their entire cultivation to suppress it. Behind the seal. Waiting.”

”If we seal the London Remnant — assuming we can, with two cultivators rather than four — it will recover. Given time, it will return to full strength behind whatever we build, study the new seal, learn it, and break free again.”

”So sealing is not a solution. It is a delay.”

”Correct. And given that this Remnant learns faster than Lushan did, probably less than a thousand years of delay. Maybe five hundred.”

”Finding two.”

Li Wei pulled out a slip from the formation-theory archive.

”Your Palm Thunder,” he said. ”You have been worrying that you caused the seal to fail.”

”I have considered the possibility.”

”Stop considering it. You did not.” He laid the slip on the table. ”Every seal has a design lifespan — the period during which its energy structure stays coherent, determined by the builder’s power, the quality of the power source, and the architecture’s complexity.”

He pointed to a formula. ”A containment seal built at Nascent Soul stage, powered by a mid-grade spirit vein, has a theoretical lifespan of approximately two thousand years, give or take a century.”

Arthur stared. ”Two thousand years.”

”The Wanderer built this seal two thousand years ago. The records disagree on his exact stage — the formula says Nascent Soul; some accounts claim higher — but whichever it was, the mathematics hold: the seal did not fail because you damaged it. It failed because it reached the end of its design lifespan. It was supposed to fail now. You accelerated the final stage by, at most, a few years.”

”The Palm Thunder was a contributing factor — stress on a system already at its breaking point. If you had not used it, the seal might have lasted another five years, perhaps ten. But it was going to fail. The mathematics are clear.”

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

The guilt Arthur had been carrying shifted; it did not vanish. He had accelerated the timeline — that was real. But the timeline had always been running out. The seal was a clock that had been counting down for two thousand years and had reached zero.

”Then the Wanderer knew,” Arthur said.

”Knew what?”

”Knew the seal would fail. He designed it; he calculated its lifespan. He was never trying to solve the problem permanently — he was buying time for someone to come after him. Someone with more power, more knowledge.” Arthur looked at the formation diagram. ”He sealed the Remnant knowing the seal would fail, connected it to the vein knowing the vein would sustain it for exactly as long as the design required, and left a message for his successor.”

”Choose carefully,” Li Wei quoted.

”He was waiting for me — or someone like me. A Soul Formation cultivator of the lineage who would find the vein, read the message, and arrive before the seal failed.” Arthur paused. ”He planned for a successor. He did not plan for the successor to be three weeks late.”

”Three weeks late is better than three hundred years late. You are here; the vein is here; the archive is here.” Li Wei gestured at the materials. ”And you have a senior brother who reads very fast. Finding three.”

Li Wei unrolled the sealed-entity classification scroll and pointed. ”The Remnant’s energy density.”

The scroll used a logarithmic scale against standard ambient lingqi: ambient 1.0, Qi Refining 1.2, Foundation Establishment 1.5, Golden Core 2.0, Nascent Soul 2.8, Soul Formation 3.5. The Remnant’s density, as measured at Lushan, was 1.7.

Arthur frowned. ”1.7? Barely above Foundation Establishment.”

”That is the density of the energy it radiates — the ambient field, the leakage. But while the density is 1.7 times that of lingqi, the frequency is entirely different.” He drew two waveforms on rice paper: the first a clean sine wave; the second jagged, irregular, visibly alien. ”The first is lingqi — the frequency at which this reality’s energy naturally oscillates. Every dantian, every spirit vein, every formation operates on it; we tune our meridians to it. The carrier wave of the cultivation world. The second is the Remnant: a different frequency, different wavelength, different harmonic structure. Not just different — incompatible.”

Arthur saw it immediately: the frequencies were not harmonically related. Mathematically orthogonal.

”They do not interact,” he said.

”Correct. The Remnant can absorb lingqi, reduce it to its baseline. But lingqi cannot affect the Remnant. The frequency mismatch means every lingqi-based attack — which is every attack in the cultivation world — passes through its structure without interacting. The energy is absorbed; the intent — the sword qi, the formation pressure, the designed effect — dissipates harmlessly.”

”Like trying to use sound waves to interfere with light.”

”Precisely. Both are waves, both carry energy, but they operate in different media at different frequencies. You can shout at a laser all day. The laser will not change.”

Arthur sat back. The implication was enormous: every technique from Qi Refining to Soul Formation was built on a single frequency. The Remnant operated on the frequency of a dead universe.

”Then we need a different frequency,” Arthur said.

”We need a way to interact with its structure directly — on its frequency, in its language, without feeding it.” Li Wei drew a third waveform, a hybrid. ”In theory, a formation could generate a counter-frequency — the way noise-cancelling headphones cancel sound. If we produced the exact inverse of the Remnant’s energy pattern, the two would cancel.”

”But?”

”But generating a counter-frequency requires mapping its full harmonic structure. Completely. And the only way is to observe it closely, for a sustained period, with divine sense.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened. ”My divine sense was consumed when I touched its core.”

”Which is why we observe it indirectly — through its effects on surrounding energy, through the pattern of its spread.”

”That could take months.”

”That could take months.” Li Wei rolled up the paper. ”In the meantime, the Remnant continues to spread, eat, grow.”

They sat in silence; the formation lamp hummed.

”Senior brother. The Lushan Remnant — after the second sealing, did it try to study the seal’s structure?”

Li Wei’s expression turned guarded. ”Yes. The four-cultivator seal was extremely complex — four interlocking matrices, each by a different hand. It began studying almost immediately.”

”How long before it understood the first layer?”

”Five hundred years. The follow-up noted the first of four layers cracked after five centuries; the second was projected at eight hundred more; the third, perhaps a thousand.”

Arthur nodded slowly. ”Four cultivators. Four layers. Five hundred years for the first.”

”Yes.”

”And the London seal?” Li Wei’s expression tightened.

”The London seal was one man’s work,” Arthur said. ”One architecture, one set of principles — and the Remnant had two thousand years to study it.”

Li Wei set down the slip, a man following a chain of reasoning to a conclusion waiting for him, patient and terrible. ”Lushan needed five hundred years against four Soul Formation layers. London was simpler — far simpler. It would have needed far less time.”

”How much less?”

Li Wei calculated; seven hundred years of cultivation, a mind like a cathedral. ”Given the difference — one layer against four — approximately fifty years. Perhaps less.”

Fifty years, out of two thousand. The Remnant had understood the seal for nineteen hundred and fifty years; it had finished its study within the first century.

”Which means,” Arthur said slowly, ”that for the last nineteen hundred years, it has not been studying the seal at all. It has been studying something else.”

”Yes.”

”Studying what?”

Li Wei met his eyes. ”The seal was its first textbook. Once it understood that, it moved on — the spirit vein, the lingqi flowing through it, the energy systems the seal connected to, the principles of manipulation, the logic of the reality that created the seal.” He paused. ”It has been studying our world, junior brother, for nineteen hundred years, through every thread of energy that touched its prison.”

”It has been studying cultivation.”

”Not cultivation. Reality. The fundamental physics of this universe — how energy works here, the rules.” His voice was quiet. ”And it has been studying them with the patience of something that does not age, does not tire, and does not forget.”

Arthur thought of the zero-state, the way it absorbed information as well as energy.

”It is not just eating,” he said. ”It is learning to eat better. Every year, every century. Optimising — becoming more efficient at reducing this reality’s energy to its own baseline.”

”And when it finishes learning — when it fully understands this reality’s energy systems — what then?”

Arthur did not answer. He did not need to. They both knew.

When the Remnant finished learning, it would not just spread.

It would hunt. And when a being of pure, ancient energy learned to hunt, it did not attack with claws or fangs or lightning. It attacked the way gravity attacks: everywhere, always, and without anything so personal as malice.
