She Used Me for a Dare… Now I Own Her Mother

Chapter 200: The Trap

The door clicked shut behind Adrian.

Silence settled over the office like fresh snow... soft, complete, absolute.

Catherine remained standing, her eyes fixed on the closed door, expression unreadable.

Then slowly her lips curved.

Not relief. Not satisfaction alone.

Something sharper.

Her smile was as if she’d just trapped someone exactly the way she wanted to.

Then, she turned without hurry, each step measured and controlled, and walked back to her chair closer to Victoria... the one she’d been sitting in before Adrian had entered.

Catherine settled into the seat with fluid grace, crossing one leg over the other, posture relaxed in a way that shouldn’t be possible after what had just happened.

The tension that had filled the room moments ago... the cold precision, the surgical devastation... melted away like it had never existed.

She leaned back slightly, that small smile still playing at the corners of her mouth.

Satisfied.

Almost... pleased.

In stark contrast to Catherine’s relaxed composure, Victoria remained rooted in her chair.

Shocked.

Her mind was still processing what had just happened... replaying it over and over, trying to make it make sense.

She had witnessed a Blackwell... a vassal family heir, actually threaten Catherine Blackwood.

Threaten.

Explicitly. Directly. With demands and deadlines and promises of active destruction.

A vassal threatening a main house heir.

A guard threatening the woman he was supposed to protect.

A man threatening the future Head of House Blackwood.

Victoria’s breath came shallow, disbelief warring with something approaching alarm.

Because she knew Catherine.

Knew exactly what happened to people who dared speak to her that way.

She’d seen it before... political enemies who’d underestimated Catherine because of her age or gender, finding themselves systematically dismantled until they had nothing left.

Catherine didn’t forgive disrespect. She didn’t let insults slide. And she certainly didn’t tolerate threats.

Yet Adrian had done all three.

Any one of those things should have triggered Catherine’s coldest, most ruthless response.

The kind of calculated vengeance that took weeks to unfold but left nothing standing when it was done.

Victoria had expected fury.

Or that dangerous quiet that always preceded Catherine’s most devastating moves.

Or at minimum, that cold precision that meant someone’s political destruction was already being calculated behind those dark eyes.

Instead... Catherine was smiling.

Sitting there relaxed and satisfied, looking almost... pleased.

As if Adrian hadn’t just committed what should be career-ending, family-damaging political suicide right in front of them.

Victoria’s hands clenched at her sides, confusion bleeding through her usual composure.

What the hell just happened?

Catherine’s smile deepened into quiet mischief when she caught the look of stunned disbelief on Victoria’s face.

”Why are you so shocked?”

The question was light, casual, as if they’d just finished discussing weather rather than witnessing a man’s complete psychological destruction.

Victoria’s mouth opened. Closed.

Then words finally broke through the paralysis.

”Why am I shocked?” Her voice rose slightly, genuine bewilderment replacing her usual control. ”Why are you smiling?”

Catherine’s expression didn’t change... if anything, the amusement deepened.

Victoria leaned forward in her chair, gesturing sharply toward the closed door.

”Catherine... that guy just threatened you. Your succession. Everything. He even wants you to beg — beg — and show up at his door tonight.”

Her voice sharpened with confusion.

”And you’re sitting there looking pleased about it.”

Silence.

Catherine said nothing, just watched Victoria with those dark eyes that suddenly seemed to contain calculations Victoria couldn’t follow.

Victoria’s expression shifted... shock melting into something unexpectedly mischievous as realization flickered behind her eyes.

”Is there something I don’t know about?

Or... don’t tell me you’re into that kind of thing...”

Catherine blinked once.

Then she laughed.

A laugh that made Victoria’s playful smirk freeze halfway.

”Oh, Victoria,” Catherine said, lifting a hand to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear, the motion elegant and deceptively relaxed. ”If only it were something that simple.”

Victoria’s confusion flickered back.

Catherine leaned forward slightly, resting her elbows on her knees, expression finally shifting from playful to something colder... focused.

”Blackwell... Oh, Blackwell...”

Her voice dripped with mock praise, each syllable wrapped in amusement that didn’t quite hide the edge beneath.

”You’re really a big family... for producing such a genius.”

She stood with fluid grace, moving toward the ornate bookshelf that lined the wall behind her desk.

Her fingers trailed along the spines of leather-bound volumes... political theory, House histories, legal precedents... before stopping at a particular shelf.

Third row from the top.

’The War of a Hundred Banners: The Rise of the Seven Sacred Houses.’

Her hand reached behind the books, and with a soft click, she extracted something small.

A recording crystal.

No larger than her thumb. Perfectly clear. Still faintly warm from active operation.

Catherine held it up to the light, watching the way afternoon sun refracted through its facets, and her smile widened into something that would have made Adrian Blackwell’s blood run cold if he’d been there to see it.

”Weren’t you curious,” she murmured, eyes still on the crystal, ”why I didn’t respond to a single insult? Not one? Because why waste outrage...”

Her fingers tapped the crystal lightly.

”...when silence records better than anger?”

Victoria’s eyes widened as understanding crashed over her.

”You... you recorded it. All of it.”

”Every word,” she said softly, turning the crystal between her fingers. ”Every threat. Every demand. Every beautiful, irreversible mistake.”

Catherine’s gaze remained fixed on the crystal, satisfaction evident in every line of her posture.

”From the moment he walked through that door until the moment he walked out believing he’d won.”

She moved back to her chair, settling into it with the crystal cradled carefully in her palm.

”His confession about his father’s orders. His demands that I beg to be his woman. His threats to ensure Richard’s succession if I don’t submit by evening. His promise of active political destruction.”

Catherine’s voice dropped into something quiet and lethal.

”All documented. All witnessed. All absolutely, irrefutably his own words condemning him.”

Victoria stared at her friend, pieces finally clicking into place with devastating clarity.

”Tell me, Victoria,” Catherine said softly, the crystal still catching light between her fingers.

”What would happen if I send these recordings to the upper echelon?”

She paused, letting the question settle.

”What will happen to this little fool... and what will happen to the Blackwells?”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed, mind immediately shifting into strategic calculation.

The recordings showed Adrian confessing his father orchestrated the seduction.

Showed him threatening a main house heir.

Showed him demanding she submit by evening or face political destruction.

If those reached the House Council, Adrian would be finished. Immediately. Completely.

But the Blackwells?

Victoria’s breath caught as the full scope crystallized.

The family couldn’t survive this. Not intact.

A vassal heir threatening a main house succession? Under orders from his father?

That wasn’t just Adrian’s crime.

That was the entire Blackwell family attempting to coerce House Blackwood’s future leadership through intimidation and manipulation.

Treason in everything but name.

The upper echelon would demand answers. Accountability. Punishment.

And Royce Blackwell — Adrian’s father, the head of the family — would face an impossible choice.

Save his son or watch his entire house fall.

Victoria’s eyes widened.

”He’ll throw Adrian away,” she breathed.

Catherine’s smile didn’t change, but something in her eyes confirmed Victoria had reached the correct conclusion.

”Of course he will,” Catherine said quietly.

”What else can he do? Defend Adrian’s actions and watch the Blackwells stripped of their vassal status? Watch generations of political influence evaporate because his heir couldn’t control his entitlement?”

Silence fell as Victoria processed the elegant brutality of the trap Catherine had constructed.

Then—

She laughed.

Not polite amusement. Not restrained chuckling.

Full, genuine laughter that seemed to rise from somewhere deep in her chest, the sound of someone finally seeing a perfect strategy click into place.

”Oh my God,” Victoria managed between laughs, pressing one hand to her forehead. ”Oh my God, Catherine.”

Her laughter subsided into something breathless, eyes shining with delighted realization.

”You’re not going to destroy the Blackwells. You’re going to blackmail them.”

Catherine’s expression remained serene, but her eyes gleamed.

”You’re going to use this...” Victoria gestured at the crystal, voice barely steady, ”...to force Royce and his entire family to fully support you during the succession.”

”What a brilliant plan,” Victoria said softly, genuine awe threading through her voice.
