Chapter 296: Chapter 305: Urgent News from the Border

After everyone disembarked from the Golden Demon Vulture, it immediately shrank and perched on Lin Feng’s shoulder. Subsequently, everyone entered the hall.

At this moment, the issues at the mansion had been completely resolved. Yuwen Qingkong, Luo Ping, and Elder Wang were discussing something with anxious expressions on their faces.

Seeing Lin Feng and the others enter, they all stood up. Noticing the bloodstains on Luo Lin and the others, they asked, ”How is the situation at the General’s Mansion now?”

”The General’s Mansion is no longer what it used to be. Except for the three of us, everyone else has perished. Ying the Dog is truly despicable to commit such treacherous acts,” said Qin Yan.

”Qin Yan, stop talking. This is something that Ying the Dog has planned for a long time. The fact that you can stand here safely is already a miracle. For now, let’s discuss how to resolve this crisis,” Luo Ping said at this time.

”Master, if it weren’t for Lin’er and her friends arriving in time, I might never have seen you again. How are your injuries? Hearing about your condition from Lin’er terrified me,” Qin Yan said.

Yuwen Qingkong looked at everyone and said, ”The fact that Old Thief Ying managed to bring the Imperial City to this state just shows how we’ve underestimated him. Our most urgent task now is to gain control over the military power of the Imperial Guard. We have no idea about the current casualties among the Imperial City Guard—truly leaving us at a loss.”

Lin Feng was utterly clueless about these matters of military power and dared not speak rashly, so he just quietly watched everyone.

”Half the forces in the Imperial City are currently in Ying the Dog’s hands. That’s indeed the most worrying issue. We need to seize the military token from his hands as fast as possible, but the problem is we don’t know if he actually has it,” Luo Ping said.

”How many forces does the Imperial City have now?” Lin Feng couldn’t help but ask.

”I have fifty thousand under my command, currently battling Ying the Dog’s men. However, it’s possible that ten thousand of them are his people. The inside should cooperate with the outside, making it hard to defend,” Luo Ping said.

”I have ten thousand Iron Blood Guards protecting the Imperial Palace now. Old Thief Ying’s men might be fewer than thirty thousand, but there are quite a few mixed in among us. It’s very difficult to eliminate them all,” Yuwen Qingkong said.

This is a thorny problem: if the traitors are not rooted out, internal chaos will persist even if all others are slain. Moreover, battles on the borders have likely commenced, and although the Celestial Dragon Empire has an army of a million, there’s no one to command it, completely scattered. If a war starts, the Celestial Dragon Empire will be at a disadvantage for sure.

Yuwen Qingkong closed his eyes, pondered briefly, and then said, ”The issue with the Imperial City isn’t the most terrifying. What worries us most is the border war. If I’m not mistaken, news will come back as early as tomorrow, and the consequences will be unimaginable.”

”General Luo, although you’re injured, you must personally oversee the border. It’s challenging for you, but there’s no other choice. With Elder Wang and me in the Imperial City, things should calm down,” he continued.

”Rest assured, Second Prince, I’ll stop the Sea Dragon Empire from crossing the border, even if it costs my life. There’s no time to waste; I’ll leave now,” Luo Ping said.

”Lin Feng, Master, please escort the Grand General. The fate of our Empire rests on this. I’ll heavily reward you after it succeeds,” Yuwen Qingkong said.

Lin Feng immediately replied, ”When the country is in peril, every man bears responsibility. I’d go even if the Second Prince didn’t ask me. As for the reward, we can discuss that when we return victorious. I’ll make sure you pay a high price then!”

Inwardly, Lin Feng was delighted. This was the best chance to acquire the Fire Spirit Pearl. No matter what, he must complete this arduous task, especially with Meng Ji giving him total confidence.

”Second Prince, I want to follow Brother Long too. As an Imperial City Guard, serving my country is my duty. It has been my dream for years. Now I can contribute to the Empire, and I, Wei Qun, shall not hesitate,” Wei Qun said excitedly.

”Good. Be cautious on this journey. I’ll have celebration wine ready at the Imperial Palace waiting for your return,” Yuwen Qingkong said.

Luo Lin initially wanted to go too, but her mother, Qin Yan, needed care. Furthermore, it was inappropriate for a girl to go to the battlefield, so she had to hold back.

”Then let us depart!” said Lin Feng.

Thereupon, they all left the hall. The Golden Demon Vulture instantly grew larger, and Lin Feng along with Meng Ji and the others sat on its back, disappearing above the mansion, leaving Yuwen Qingkong and the others shocked.

...

Even with the Golden Demon Vulture’s speed, it would still take most of the day to reach the border from the Imperial City. Everyone felt anxious.

At this time, atop the border’s towering walls, stood two middle-aged men in golden armor, gazing worriedly at the dense black mass of the Sea Dragon Empire’s army below the city.

”I wonder when the Grand General will arrive. The enemy’s army is so strong; we can’t hold them off for many days,” one said.

”The enemy’s sudden large-scale attack was obviously premeditated. I’m sure there’s also turmoil within the Imperial City; otherwise, the Grand General would have already arrived. Given his strength, flying here would only take a day,” the other replied.

”We must defend the city at all costs, or the consequences of it being breached by enemy forces would be too horrific,” he added.

Just then, two armored figures appeared in the sky over the Sea Dragon Empire’s side. One of them looked at the two on the city wall and said, ”Bring out Luo Ping to duel me. Are the people of the Celestial Dragon Empire all cowards? Apart from shutting the gates, it seems they can’t do anything else.”

”Sun Wanli, don’t spout nonsense in front of me. With your petty skills, you’re not worthy of our Grand General’s time. Come, have a duel with me instead,” one of them retorted.

”Just as our commander predicted, your Grand General isn’t here. Brace yourself for death!”

The two then flew back, and one shouted, ”Luo Ping isn’t here. Heroes of the Sea Dragon Empire, breach this city and show the weaklings of the Celestial Dragon Empire the might of our hundred-thousand-strong army.”

As soon as he finished speaking, a massive roar erupted, ”Kill! Kill! Kill!” Everyone was extremely excited.

”Charge!” commanded the one who spoke earlier.

The Sea Dragon Empire’s troops rushed forward like a dark tide. The two generals on the wall quickly ordered, ”Fire arrows and kill these bastards!”

Instantly, a rain of arrows poured from the city walls, striking and killing many.

The Celestial Dragon Empire released arrows, and the Sea Dragon Empire responded in kind. Both sides suffered significant casualties in the arrow storm.

The Celestial Dragon Empire was fighting passively, unable to go out and confront the enemy directly. They could only shoot arrows and hurl fireballs and stones from the walls. The overwhelming numbers of the enemy had little effect, and soon many reached the city wall, trying their best to destroy the steel gate over a meter thick...

PS: Typing in an internet cafe is infuriating. I initially planned six updates today, but it’s impossible to focus with so many people gaming around, affecting the quality of the writing. Also, some people keep watching me type. No updates at midnight; I don’t know when I’ll be back online since the internet often goes down. Apparently, the network cable might have been stolen. I’ll directly post multiple updates tomorrow morning, drafting at home and saving to a USB. Please understand if you’re waiting, and stop complaining!
