I Am Scouted by Real Madrid

Chapter 922: Chapter 21: Barrage and Bombardment

Kompany’s remarks are based on facts, and according to inside information, at Bayern Munich’s home, Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich will employ ”intensive defense,” or colloquially known as parking the bus, to meet the eager Real Madrid.

With the team having the advantage of 3 away goals in the first leg, people are more optimistic about Bayern Munich advancing to the next round, whereas Real Madrid might achieve victory, but more often they may falter against Bayern Munich’s solid defense.

After all, they need to score 4 goals against Bayern Munich without conceding to have any hope of advancing to the next round.

That’s Bayern Munich, not just any random team.

Moreover, speaking of defense, during his player days, Kompany was an excellent central defender, and in his coaching era, after many setbacks, Kompany began to develop defensive wisdom.

On May 29, 2024, Vincent Kompany took the helm at Bayern Munich.

The former Belgian national team captain brought his defensive wisdom from Manchester City to Munich.

Reconstructing the defense became his core task for the first season. Bayern Munich’s management fully trusted him. Kompany’s restructuring plan was launched immediately.

The key to reorganizing the defense was Jonathan Tah.

In the summer of 2024, the 29-year-old German international joined on a free transfer.

Tah signed a four-year long-term contract with Bayern.

His steady performance during his time at Bayer Leverkusen earned Kompany’s favor.

Bayern Munich’s CEO publicly praised his value.

Tah was positioned as the leader of the defense. His experience and aerial superiority filled critical gaps.

Kompany needed such a tactical focal point.

It is precisely because of Tah’s presence that Kompany is not at all scared of Chen Zhong, after all, Tah is 1.95 meters tall, in football games, his speed and agility may not be great, but his physical confrontation is absolutely top-notch.

In addition to Kompany repeatedly adjusting the combination scheme during training.

The current Bayern Munich, not to mention other aspects, can be considered top-notch in defense.

Moreover, the tactical details of past matches also reflect Kompany’s defensive philosophy.

High pressing requires unified movement. Set-piece defense adopts zone combined man-marking.

The transition phase emphasizes quick ball release.

These changes have gradually solidified throughout the season.

Players need to adapt to stricter tactical discipline.

Kompany personally demonstrated defensive positioning, his coaching style carries the imprint of his player days, league progress validates the effectiveness of the defensive transformation.

In the 24-25 season, Bayern Munich lost only two Bundesliga matches.

In May, they secured the championship plate in advance. Defensive stability became the cornerstone of their victory.

Opponents found it noticeably tougher to penetrate in positional play. The loss rate from set-pieces significantly decreased.

Tah and Upamecano’s main combination became increasingly cohesive.

Dier contributed crucial interceptions in key matches.

Kompany’s reforms weren’t limited to personnel adjustments.

He rebuilt the defense’s responsibility system. Center-backs were granted the authority to organize attacks. Full-backs cutting inside for protection became a fixed routine.

These changes require time to integrate. Defensive disconnect still appeared early in the season. As tactical understanding deepened, the overall coordination gradually improved. Players started to understand the tactical intent behind each movement.

Bayern Munich’s management recognized the value of the defensive upgrade.

The four-year contract reflects the long-term plan for Tah.

The existing center-back lineup forms healthy competition. Kompany’s team-building philosophy received practical support. Bundesliga champions are just the starting point of the reform process.

And this season, Bayern Munich has been cruising through various competitions, evidently with the momentum to seize another Triple Crown.

Despite the constant external doubts, Kompany’s defensive system demonstrated startling resilience in crucial battles.

This time, facing Real Madrid in the second leg knockout, Bayern Munich’s tactical layout focuses on two core strategies:

One is the aerial blockade led by Tah, the 1.95-meter Jonathan Tah is tasked with marking Real Madrid’s potential forward Chen Zhong, his top-notch confrontation ability and aerial dominance become the central barrier against aerial bombardment.

Tah and Upamecano form a complementary combination to establish a three-dimensional defensive line, with the former focusing on aerial duels and physical confrontation, while the latter uses mobility to sweep up second balls.

Set-piece defense upgrade: Kompany uses a ”zone + man-marking” hybrid system, setting up specific interference for Real Madrid’s set-piece experts, while Tah sits in the central area to dismantle crossing threats.

Shrinking space and rapid transition: In the second leg, Bayern Munich will proactively cede some ball control, compressing the formation to the 30-meter zone in front of the penalty area, utilizing Dier’s anticipation interception and full-backs cutting inside (like Kimmich) to fill the flank gaps.

Once the ball is intercepted, Sane and Musiala use their instant activation ability to burst into the wing vacuum left by Real Madrid’s advance.

In fact, this is also what Alonso is worried about, he fears falling into Kompany’s trap, after all, Bayern Munich holds a 3-goal advantage, using deep defense to lure Real Madrid into pressing forward fully.

Kompany hinted at ”special arrangements” before the match, interpreted as a tactical trap targeting Real Madrid’s impatient mentality—exhausting opponents through a war of attrition.

This match is highly significant for Kompany as well, if successful in overcoming Real Madrid, Bayern Munich will be just two steps away from the Triple Crown.

Kompany’s reforms are far from over: Bundesliga champions are merely the onset of a matured defensive system, the Champions League battlefield is the ultimate crucible for testing its ”ironclad defense.”
