The Side Character Who Wins by Doing Nothing

In her last moment of consciousness, Lu Sangjiu gazed at Xie Ningyuan right before her and had only a single thought.

’Could this... really be the compassion of a Buddhist Practitioner?’

When Lu Sangjiu opened her eyes again, she found herself lying on an exquisite, large bed.

Staring at the familiar surroundings, she froze. ’Is this... my bedchamber in the Moon Palace?’

As the thought crossed her mind, a sharp pain lanced through her head. For some reason, she felt as if she wasn’t supposed to be here...

’But this is my home. If I don’t belong here, then where do I belong?’

While she was lost in confusion, Hall Master Fa Shan rushed in.

”Palace Master, this is bad!”

”We just received word! Miss Bai Sheng has been thrown into the death dungeon by the Beast Taming Sect!”

Hearing this, the flicker of confusion vanished from her mind. Lu Sangjiu frowned. ”The death dungeon? Why have they imprisoned her?”

Fa Shan spoke urgently. ”I heard Miss Bai’s master is dead. Someone has accused her of being the murderer, and they also claim she’s been colluding with Demon Cultivators in a plot to massacre the Immortal Gates!”

Lu Sangjiu sneered. ”Colluding with Demon Cultivators? Heh, it’s pretty obvious who they’re pointing the finger at.”

Although their cultivation levels were worlds apart, and one was a Demon Cultivator while the other was a Cultivator—seemingly having nothing in common—the two were, in fact, good friends.

Back when Lu Sangjiu was preparing to break through to the Transcendence Tribulation Stage, she had hidden her cultivation and traveled the world.

Along the way, she encountered a Demon Cultivator using an Evil Technique to harm living creatures. She had always despised those who tarnished the name of Demon Cultivators, so she decided to intervene.

That’s when she ran into Bai Sheng, who had the same idea.

The two even fought at first, but they soon learned they shared the same goal and decided to cooperate.

They developed a good impression of each other, and the misunderstandings between Cultivators and Demon Cultivators slowly faded away.

Both had easygoing personalities, and so they became friends.

Afterwards, they traveled together for a long time.

It wasn’t until recently, when Bai Sheng’s Little Junior Sister saw the two of them together, that Lu Sangjiu decided to part ways with her to avoid causing Bai Sheng any trouble.

’During all that time, we only ever spoke of friendship and nothing more. Where does this talk of collusion come from? It’s a joke!’

After returning, she had worried Bai Sheng might face repercussions, which was why she had Fa Shan keep an ear out. She never imagined it would actually lead to this.

Fa Shan had also gotten to know Bai Sheng when she and Lu Sangjiu were together, so he was anxious as well.

”I wanted to investigate further, but I was afraid of tipping them off and solidifying the accusation that Miss Bai is colluding with Demon Cultivators. I could only come to you for instructions first, Palace Master.”

Lu Sangjiu thought for a moment. ”Fine. I’ll go see her myself.”

Lu Sangjiu was currently at the Peak of Unity Stage. The Beast Taming Sect’s Transcendence Tribulation Stage old ancestor was in seclusion year-round, and its two remaining Body Integration Realm Supreme Elders rarely made public appearances.

As long as she was careful, sneaking in wouldn’t be difficult.

After spending half the night winding her way through the Beast Taming Sect, Lu Sangjiu finally found the entrance to the death dungeon.

Dark, cramped, and damp.

When she saw Bai Sheng, she was curled up in this wretched place.

She was covered in blood. Perhaps sensing Lu Sangjiu’s aura, she slowly lifted her head.

The moment she saw Lu Sangjiu, she forced the corners of her mouth into a smile that looked worse than a sob.

”A Jiu... you came.”

Lu Sangjiu was the name Venerable Gu Huang, the Palace Master of the Moon Palace, used while traveling.

Even after learning her true identity, Bai Sheng still preferred calling her that, saying it felt more personal.

But today’s Bai Sheng had lost all her former spirit. She was more wretched than ever before.

Lu Sangjiu felt a pang in her heart. And... for some reason, she felt as if it had been a very, very long time since she had last seen her.

Looking at that face, the pain that surfaced in her heart felt as if she had once lost her completely.

After a long moment, Lu Sangjiu took a deep breath and walked over to Bai Sheng.

She didn’t ask any questions, only said, ”I’m getting you out of here.”

But just as she reached out to help her up, Bai Sheng spoke. ”No... I can’t leave.”

She grabbed Lu Sangjiu’s right hand, tilting her head up to look at her, her face filled with anguish.

”I didn’t kill our master. It was my Little Junior Sister, Jin Ling’er... She’s cultivating an Evil Technique and used it to kill him.”

”The elders have all been deceived by her. If I just run away, what will happen to the Beast Taming Sect? Everyone will be in danger!”

’This is the sect where I grew up. How can I just stand by and watch everyone fall into ruin?’

A sudden rage flared in Lu Sangjiu. ”You’re worried about them, but do they care about you in the slightest?”

”They’ve known you for years, yet they don’t even know what kind of person you are. Now they’ve done this to you without a second thought, and you still care about them?!”

Lu Sangjiu’s words struck a nerve. A flash of hesitation appeared in Bai Sheng’s eyes, but she ultimately shook her head. ”Even if it’s not for them... I have to avenge my master.”

Lu Sangjiu said, exasperated, ”Look at the state you’re in! How are you going to get revenge?”

A glimmer of hope shone in Bai Sheng’s eyes. ”When my senior brother returns, he’ll definitely believe me!”

Lu Sangjiu had heard Bai Sheng mention this senior brother before. His name was Luo Ming.

They had grown up together, and their master had already arranged their engagement. Barring any accidents, they would one day become cultivation partners.

But... as she heard Bai Sheng speak of him, a flicker of disgust crossed Lu Sangjiu’s eyes.

’For some reason, I have a feeling things won’t go the way Bai Sheng hopes.’

But Bai Sheng’s mind was made up. Knowing her personality, Lu Sangjiu knew that further words would be useless.

So she stopped trying to persuade her and simply fed her the healing Elixir Pills she had brought.

”Thank you.” Gratitude filled Bai Sheng’s eyes as she spoke sincerely, ”I’m so grateful and touched that you would still come to save me under these circumstances.”

”If you’re so grateful, then take care of yourself,” Lu Sangjiu said irritably.

After a pause, she sighed. ”Is there anything else I can do to help?”

Bai Sheng smiled. ”This is enough. You should leave quickly, before you’re discovered.”

Lu Sangjiu scoffed. ”So what if I’m discovered? Am I supposed to be afraid of them?”

Bai Sheng coaxed her gently, ”I know you’re powerful, but it’s always better to avoid trouble. Please, go.”

Lu Sangjiu said no more. But just as she was about to leave, she suddenly felt an immense pressure bearing down on them!

Her expression changed drastically. She grabbed Bai Sheng, burst through the wall, and flew away at top speed!

The next moment, the two of them were hovering in mid-air. The death dungeon where they had just been was struck by a Palm Technique descending from the sky and was instantly razed to the ground!

Needless to say, none of the other prisoners inside could have survived.

Bai Sheng’s face was pale as she stared blankly at the ruins below, still in shock.

Lu Sangjiu, however, stared coldly at the elder in the distance and sneered, ”Mobilizing a Body Integration Realm Supreme Elder... I’m truly honored.”

The elder sneered back. ”A mere Demon Cultivator dares to trespass into my Beast Taming Sect. If we let you leave alive, how could the Beast Taming Sect maintain its standing among the Five Great Sects?”
