Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 1733: Chapter 1733: Same to You

Yuwen, having angered Zhuo Ya, caught Gu Sheng’s bright eyes, “The Magistrate has good taste.”

Yuwen chuckled, “Yes, I also think I have good taste.”

Gu Sheng was considering getting engaged, regretting his earlier firm refusal of marriage proposals. Now he had to wait for an engagement, though he wasn’t in a rush to marry; the Magistrate was still young, he just wanted to betroth her back home.

Yuwen waved her hand in front of Gu Sheng’s eyes, “What are you thinking about, not saying a word for so long? The tea in front of you has gotten cold.”

Gu Sheng smiled, took up his teacup and said, “I want to save up more silver.”

The land was still too little; they needed an estate at the very least.

Yuwen raised her eyebrows, “You’re really not concerned about reputation? You’ve been in the Hanlin Academy for almost three years.”

“I prefer practicality.”

As for the three-year mark, he truly wasn’t worried. He didn’t intend to rely on the Marquis Zhou Residence; he had his own plans. Thinking of this, he glanced at the radiant Magistrate, unable to keep the corners of his mouth from lifting.

On the way home, Yuwen passed by the garden and was stopped by Ming Hui, “Let me have a look; is this still my lazy sister? You’ve been going out quite a bit lately!”

Yuwen, “Why have you been staying at home recently, not going out of the city?”

Ming Hui was a bit speechless, “Your tongue really knows how to stab someone in the heart.”

“Takes one to know one; are you not watching Miss Shao anymore?”

Ming Hui felt like rolling his eyes; everyone in the family was smart, truly no secrets could be kept, “Get lost, I won’t see you off.”

Yuwen really left just like that, not bothering to care about Ming Hui, though she was surprised by his choice.

Ming Hui said to the young servant, “Look, does she behave at all like a sister?”

The young servant kept his head down, silent, thinking in his heart that only Miss Yu Jiao behaved like a sister; the other young ladies were too assertive.

In the main residence, Lady Li nagged, “I’m also from a farming background, I don’t look down on Miss Shao’s status, but when I said I wanted to meet her, Ming Hui wouldn’t let me.”

Zhulan, “The kids are grown, they have their own plans.”

Ha, she knew Shao Ting was avoiding Ming Hui; the girl was clear-headed! Indeed, she was the girl she favored.

Lady Li, “My husband also tells me not to interfere, but I can’t help but keep it in mind.”

“Don’t worry about it; when it’s time for you to step in, you won’t be able to avoid it.”

Lady Li snorted, “I’ll wait for Ming Hui to ask me.”

Zhulan laughed, “There will certainly be such a day.”

At the Ministry of Revenue, Zhou Shuren finished checking the accounts with the Crown Prince and handed them over, “There are no problems now.”

The Crown Prince, “Thank you, Marquis.”

“No trouble at all.”

The Crown Prince had someone take the accounts, then said, “It’s almost tax collection time again.”

Zhou Shuren was cautious, “The tax revenue is accounted for.”

Before it was even recorded, plans were already made. The major expenses for next year depended on the autumn tax revenue. If the annual tax revenue does not decrease, he would thank Heaven.

The Crown Prince touched his nose. Lately, the Emperor kept pondering how to extract silver from the hands of the Marquis Zhou, who was particularly cautious.

The Crown Prince said, “The tax revenue in Zhangzhou Province has increased significantly.”

A smile appeared on Zhou Shuren’s face, “Yes, previously it was embarrassing to have tax revenue recorded; now it’s quite impressive.”

The Crown Prince smoothly remarked, “The Marquis’s granddaughter’s husband is still a County Magistrate; it’s a pity to stay a County Magistrate.”

Zhou Shuren raised an eyebrow, “As long as they can benefit the people, it doesn’t matter where they serve.”

The Crown Prince laughed, “The Marquis is right.”

After the Crown Prince left, Zhou Shuren pondered everything. This time, with Mr. Loo’s purges, many government positions in the capital were vacant, and some officials from various provinces needed to be filled. The Crown Prince had mentioned Liufeng, and the Emperor was no longer holding back positions.

Counting carefully, only Liufeng in his family had achievements worth transferring. Mingyun was placed by him beside Wu Ming, and the Emperor wouldn’t transfer him; if he had plans, he would let him know first.

Chang Lian had just been transferred not long ago, and his position on the map wouldn’t be easily changed.

Zhou Shuren silently thought, comparing the Zhou family with noble families, they fell far behind. His family had no one to transfer, while the noble families had many waiting for the chance!

Leaving the government office, at the entrance of the Ministry of Rites, Chang Yi came out and saw his father’s carriage, running over, “Father, why did you come to pick me up?”

“Come up and talk.”

“Alright.”

Many officials at the Ministry of Rites were envious, seeing how considerate one’s father was!

On the carriage, Zhou Shuren spoke about Liufeng’s transfer and promotion, and Chang Yi was excited, “Is it true?”

“What do you think?”

Chang Yi beamed with joy, “If Father says it’s true, it must be true.”

Zhou Shuren stroked his beard, “I thought Liufeng would stay for another year or two; now it’s his opportunity.”

This plan really couldn’t keep up with changes. Who could have predicted Mr. Loo’s case would implicate so many, resulting in too many official downfalls?

Chang Yi was happy for his son-in-law; the better the son-in-law, the better for his daughter, “Should we write a letter to inform Liufeng?”

“Let him know so he’s not caught off guard.”

Chang Yi said, “Is it that urgent?”

Zhou Shuren lowered his voice, “The Emperor’s not holding back, and the vacant positions will soon be divided up.”

“I’ll write and send an expedited letter when I get back.”

“Hmm, don’t know where he’ll be transferred.”

Returning to the capital wasn’t possible, the Crown Prince’s intent was clear—to go elsewhere to better a local community.

Chang Yi was a bit worried, “I hope it’s not another remote place!”

The son-in-law’s merit was in planting medicinal herbs, fearing he’d be placed in another impoverished province.

Zhou Shuren stroked his beard, “We’ll find out when the time comes.”

Liufeng, this child, was very stable; no matter where he went, there was no need to worry. The child was capable and wouldn’t fear challenges; he was still around!

In the evening, after dinner, Zhulan sighed, “It’s difficult for Chang Lian to return to the capital, and the same for Liufeng and Yushuang.”

It was better in modern times; after accumulating some vacation, one could fly back. In ancient times, such thoughts were impossible.

Zhou Shuren said, “Then write to have Yushuang bring the two children back for a while?”

“Forget it, the children are young; don’t trouble them. Let’s wait until they’re a bit older.”

Zhou Shuren smiled, “I’ll accompany you.”

Zhulan also smiled, “The only one who can always accompany me is you.”

Next day, at the Hanlin Academy, Gu Sheng rubbed his face, furrowing his brows; Zhuo Guyu’s gaze towards him was suspicious!

Zhuo Guyu felt like his heart was on fire. Yesterday when Zhuo Ya returned, he realized Ji Deming was right; his suspicions, once dismissed with time, now felt like a slap across the face.

Marquis Zhou Residence preferred to acknowledge Gu Sheng from a poor scholar background, yet shunned his Duke of Yongan Residence. If the two families had been united by marriage earlier, how would the Duke of Yongan Residence be in today’s predicament?

Zhuo Guyu was unwilling; now entering the palace, Gu Sheng surpassed him, and no one at the Hanlin Academy looked down on Gu Sheng anymore. It was all due to the Marquis Zhou Residence!

Gu Sheng had already realized something must have been said by Miss Zhuo; he didn’t think Zhuo Guyu would publicize it, so he didn’t pay it any mind.

At noon, Zhuo Guyu blocked Gu Sheng, “Ha, I thought you were so capable, but it’s just that.”

Gu Sheng smiled, stepping forward to whisper, “We’re alike, but too bad you can’t cling on even if you wanted.”

The Marquis Zhou Residence won’t give you support, and the Magistrate ignores you!
