Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 1706: Chapter 1706: Overturned

Zhou Shuren walked with a grim face, drawing the attention of the ministers who hadn’t gone far. They hadn’t heard clearly what Mr. Luo said earlier, but Mr. Luo’s troubled expression was very clear to them, making them think Mr. Luo had offended the Marquis Zhou.

Zhou Shuren thought to himself, if not for the arrogance of that old Luo, who still wanted to outdo him, and let the news spread, ha, his son’s good reputation would be gone.

In ancient times, a woman’s reputation was important, and so was a man’s. Ran Xun believed that with the birth of the eldest illegitimate son, the Ran family’s male reputation was affected, and he feared another like Ran Xun would emerge.

Wong Ju said, “Don’t be angry, just listen to his words and let it pass.”

Zhou Shuren’s face had returned to normal, “Chang Xhong is not young anymore; I’m planning on arranging a marriage for him.”

Undecided hesitations bring chaos; it’s better to decide early and avoid trouble.

Wong Ju was startled and then responded, “Have you found someone suitable?”

Zhou Shuren felt a bit better, “Indeed, a fine young lady.”

Wong Ju knew how picky Zhou Shuren was, so a remark of ‘fine’ truly meant fine, making him curious, “Whose young lady is it?”

“The details aren’t settled yet; we’ll know upon engagement.”

If mentioned now, it might harm the young lady’s reputation, so his future daughter-in-law needed protection.

Wong Ju was even more curious, but couldn’t quite guess which notable young lady in the capital it could be.

After leaving the palace, Zhou Shuren instructed Jin Yan to send a message home, informing his wife about the matter, so she could think about when to invite a matchmaker.

At the Hou Residence, Zhulan, upon hearing that the Luo family’s eldest daughter-in-law had come to express gratitude, turned cold, “Do not see them.”

Steward Ding, who disliked the gaze of the Luo family’s eldest daughter-in-law, briskly went out upon receiving the order.

At the mansion’s gate, Steward Ding smiled and said, “The old madam says you have thanked the wrong place, you should be at the Qin Prince Residence, please return.”

The smile on the Luo family’s eldest daughter-in-law froze, “How could I have come to the wrong place? My daughter Ji Rong said…”

Steward Ding cut her off, “Please return.”

Having said that, Steward Ding signaled for the gatekeeper to close the door.

The Luo family’s eldest daughter-in-law stared at the tightly closed door, her expression changed repeatedly. She mused how Ji Rong had suddenly fallen ill; it turned out she was deceived. She did not want Ji Rong to marry into the Hou Residence, so Ji Rong’s illness made her happy, and she had specifically brought her granddaughter along, only to not be allowed inside.

In the main courtyard, knowing they left and Jin Yan returned, Zhulan said, “I know.”

Jin Yan withdrew from the room, and Zhulan said to Qing Xue, “Ji Rong certainly underestimated Mr. Luo’s shrewdness and the greed of the Luo family.”

Qing Xue said, “These days, Ms. Ji will not have it easy.”

The Luo family is known for valuing face, known to everyone in the capital. Even now, with little face left, old Mr. Luo would still be furious.

Zhulan said, “Send someone to the Qin Prince Residence; it’s better for Chang Xhong to get engaged early.”

She did not dislike Ji Rong and even admired Ji Rong’s defiance, especially against a conservative family like the Luo’s, which was a pity.

Qing Xue replied, “Yes.”

Xue Han arrived quickly, with a less-than-pleasant expression on arrival. Zhulan asked, “Did the Luo family’s eldest daughter-in-law go to the Qin Prince Residence?”

“Yes, she had already expressed her thanks to Ms. Ji.”

Zhulan thought to herself, Ji Rong might have it even harder now, wondering if she would foolishly harbor resentment against the Hou Residence.

Xue Han then smiled, “Mother, didn’t I say my judgement wasn’t wrong.”

“Indeed, your judgement is quite good.”

“That’s right.”

Although not yet married, she had her parents’ guidance, and after marriage, her mother-in-law’s counsel, with frequent visits to the palace allowing her to see various officials’ wives and ladies. Despite her young age, she had a sharp eye for things.

After the girls had set down the tea, Zhulan spoke, “Yesterday, your father, and I met Ms. Wei, and we were very satisfied. Discuss it with Lady Phang; I will pick a date.”

Xue Han asked, “Father also saw Ms. Wei? Where did you meet her?”

Zhulan’s eyes wandered, “That’s not important.”

Xue Han didn’t think much about it, “Does Chang Xhong agree?”

She had a favorable opinion of Ms. Wei and wanted to hear her brother’s thoughts.

Zhulan’s eyes were full of smiles, “If he wasn’t satisfied, he wouldn’t have given Wei’s second son an invitation.”

“I missed a lot then when I didn’t know.”

“The two indeed have fate.”

Xue Han’s eyes brightened, “Mother, rest assured, your daughter will handle it beautifully.”

“Good, while doing so, find out what Ms. Wei likes.”

Xue Han replied, “Okay.”

When Chang Xhong came over, he faced his sister’s teasing gaze, looked down at himself, and said, “Sister, is there something wrong with me?”

“I’m going to handle things for you, so you stay and chat with mother.”

Having heard his sister came, he specially came over, only for her to leave at once. “Mother, what is sis handling for me?”

Zhulan explained the morning court affair and the intent of the Luo family’s eldest daughter-in-law, “It was a gradual plan, but thinking about it now, an early engagement is also good.”

If Ji Rong were wise, she would give up on her thoughts. Once engaged, any outrageous actions by Ji Rong would ruin herself.

Chang Xhong was a bit shy, “Then I’ll trouble mother.”

Zhulan teased, “You’re more satisfied with Ms. Wei than I thought.”

Chang Xhong rubbed his nose, “Eye fate, like you said, eye fate.”

He’d met many misses, many excellent ones among them, but none caught his eye. In the end, he let his parents help in choosing, unexpectedly encountering one that matched his appearance preference.

Zhulan advised, “Recently, do not go out.”

Chang Xhong replied, “Okay.”

He didn’t ask more about how Ji Rong would end up. Once words are spoken, one must anticipate the worst outcome, and clearly, this time, Ms. Ji miscalculated.

When Yu Wen learned about it, she exclaimed, “!!”

She hadn’t thought of how to reprimand Ms. Ji, only for Ms. Ji to mess up on her own!

Yu Wen felt a bit afraid, “If not for the Luo family being too greedy, rumors spreading would’ve affected my uncle’s reputation.”

Zhulan asked, “So should we thank the foolishness of the Luo family?”

“Indeed, we should be thankful.”

Zhulan also pondered that the Luo family’s foolishness saved Ji Rong; otherwise, she, who somewhat admired Ji Rong, would have acted as well.

Yu Wen asked, “Grandma, with Chang Xhong’s engagement, could I be considered a young matchmaker?”

“When do you plan on getting engaged?”

Almost two years have passed by.

Yu Wen replied, “At least wait another year.”

“Fine, I won’t concern myself with your affairs. Just inform your grandma ahead of time when you decide to get engaged.”

Yu Wen laughed, “Okay.”

The next day, Zhou Shuren didn’t see old Mr. Luo at the morning court, clicking his tongue twice, thinking the man was too ashamed to meet him!

The ministers remained silent; the older Zhou Shuren got, the more his skill at annoying others grew.

Zhou Shuren was unaware of his colleagues’ many thoughts; he was in quite a good mood.

At the Hou Residence, Zhulan had people monitor the Luo family, and upon confirming no news had leaked, she breathed a sigh of relief, realizing the benefits of the Luo family’s concern for face—embarrassing matters would be tightly kept.

In a good mood, Zhulan took the gift list they had penned and rewritten last night to the storeroom. The main courtyard had several storerooms, indicating how much she and Shuren had accumulated over the years.

This marriage proposal list was written and revised by Zhulan and her husband until they were satisfied before bed.

Standing at the storeroom door, Zhulan nodded with satisfaction, realizing this was her kingdom built over the years!

When Lady Li arrived, she was puzzled, “Mother, are you organizing the storeroom?”

Speaking, Lady Li walked to the storeroom’s entrance, seeing the opened boxes within, and she was rather shocked!
