The waiting was lengthy, torturous…

When the operating room door swung open, it was as if a glimmer of dawn had emerged amid the despairing darkness for Wen Ran. She bolted upright out of her chair.

Mr. Bai and Mrs. Bai also got up quickly. Wen Ran dashed over and grabbed Gu Kai’s hand. “Older Brother Gu, how is Xiaoxiao?”

After several hours of surgery, Gu Kai looked weary, despite the chill in the air, his clothing was scanty and a sheen of sweat covered his forehead.

“Ranran, Bai Xiaoxiao is no longer in mortal danger, but her injuries are severe. She will not regain consciousness for at least a couple of days.”

He relayed the result of the rescue in a detached manner. He mentioned nothing about the agonizing procedure. Initially, a glint of joy flickered in Wen Ran’s eyes only to be immediately drowned in a sea of sorrow.

Mo Xiuchen stepped forward and pulled her into his arms, as Gu Kai explained the extent of Bai Xiaoxiao’s injuries, which were not just her brain but also other parts of her body.

After regaining consciousness, she would still have to spend several months in bed.

“President Bai, Mrs. Bai, I would like to seek your consent to transfer Bai Xiaoxiao to Kangning Hospital.”

Gu Kai explained Xiaoxiao’s condition and looked to her parents for approval.

Although G City People’s Hospital is not bad, Kangning Hospital has the best physicians and is the most powerful private hospital in the country. This is particularly true of Gu Kai and his father, whom many patients from all over the country, or even from abroad, struggle to secure appointments with.

The most severe injury sustained by Bai Xiaoxiao is to her brain.

And since Gu Kai is an expert in this field, Mr. and Mrs. Bai naturally agreed to have him personally attend their daughter.

“Thank you, Doctor Gu. We have no objections. As long as Xiaoxiao regains consciousness, we are okay with anything.” The fact that their daughter was temporarily out of life-threatening danger didn’t necessarily mean that she would wake up safely. Mrs. Bai broke down in tears again.

“Older Brother Gu, when will Xiaoxiao be transferred? Is it now?”

“Yes, we will transfer her overnight. I will go make the arrangements.” Gu Kai paused when he saw the redness in Wen Ran’s eyes, then turned to Mo Xiuchen: “First, accompany Ranran to have something to eat, then go directly to Kangning Hospital.”

“President Bai, Mrs. Bai, would you like to see Bai Xiaoxiao first?”

Wen Ran’s lips moved, but no words came out.

Though she wanted to see Xiaoxiao, she knew that Xiaoxiao’s parents would want to see her even more.

“Ranran, I’ll accompany you to grab a bite to eat first. Tonight, if you want to stay with Xiaoxiao, stay with her at the hospital. Let Mr. and Mrs. Bai have a moment with Xiaoxiao first. They can go home later.”

Mo Xiuchen filled in the gaps for Gu Kai. While Gu Kai didn’t say so explicitly, Mo Xiuchen knew that’s what he meant.

The Bai parents were getting old, and they couldn’t pull an all-nighter. Wen Ran felt guilty and blamed herself. She wouldn’t sleep if she didn’t stay with Xiaoxiao. So it would be better for her to stay in the hospital.

Gu Kai softened, “Ranran, go eat first. How else will you have the strength to take care of Bai Xiaoxiao?”

“Okay!”

Wen Ran forced down her emotions and mumbled a few words to Mr. and Mrs. Bai before leaving with Mo Xiuchen.

She was in no mood to eat.

Mo Xiuchen only ordered a bowl of porridge for her, but she just sat there, making no move to pick up the spoon.

“Ranran, you must eat this porridge.”

Mo Xiuchen frowned, his tone mildly stern.

“I know, but I can’t.”

Wen Ran bit her lip and looked at the stern look in Mo Xiuchen’s eyes as she spooned a mouthful of porridge into her mouth and swallowed it without tasting it.

Mo Xiuchen didn’t say anything else seeing that she was willing to eat. He sat quietly with her as she ate her bowl of porridge. When she finished, he paid the bill, took her hand, and left the restaurant.

By the time they got to Kangning Hospital, Bai Xiaoxiao was just being transferred from the People’s Hospital.

Bai Xiaoxiao was placed in the ICU. Her head was wrapped in gauze, and there were tubes all over her body. Wen Ran held her mouth as she stepped inside, and tears streamed down her face without a sound.

Mo Xiuchen’s eyes narrowed, and he drew her tightly into his arms. Next to them, Gu Kai’s deep, velvety voice echoed in the room.

“… Ranran, I’ve arranged for a special nursing assistant to attend Bai Xiaoxiao 24 hours a day. Spend a while with her here. You don’t have to stay all night.”

Back at the People’s Hospital, when Mrs. Bai saw her daughter lying there, she broke down crying. Finally, persuaded by Gu Kai and her husband, she agreed to go home.

Mr. Bai left Bai Xiaoxiao in the care of Gu Kai. His worry laid more with his wife, so he accompanied her home.

“Older Brother Gu, will Xiaoxiao definitely wake up?”

Looking at Gu Kai with tearful eyes, Wen Ran expressed her fear.

Gu Kai nodded, “As long as I’m here, she will definitely wake up.”

“Ranran, not only will Xiaoxiao wake up, but she will also need your care and company in the coming months.”

Mo Xiuchen chimed in, hoping to alleviate her sorrow.

A few minutes later, Gu Kai and Mo Xiuchen left the ICU, allowing Wen Ran to stay alone and talk to Bai Xiaoxiao.

Just as they walked out, they saw Luo Haofeng and Qin Mu hurrying from the end of the hallway.

“Only just finished your meal engagement now?”

Mo Xiuchen cast a slight bit of scorn towards Luo Haofeng and Qin Mu, Luo Haofeng nodded, “How is Bai Xiaoxiao doing? She’s not going to die, is she?”

His words immediately drew a murderous gaze from Mo Xiuchen, “If you’re worried, just say it. There’s no need for this subterfuge. It’s not your style.”

Luo Haofeng’s face flushed with embarrassment. Qin Mu nearby smirked, “If it weren’t for the others being so troublesome, he would have come to the hospital a long time ago.”

Gu Kai squinted, “Bai Xiaoxiao is seriously injured, she won’t be able to torture you for a few months. So go ahead, feel free to chase girls without worry. You’re off your groom duty.”

“Don’t go too far!”

Pretending to be annoyed, Luo Haofeng glared at them, “I’m very kind-hearted, there’s no harm in being a groom once in a while. I just hope Bai Xiaoxiao recovers soon. Otherwise, it won’t be me or Qin Mu who’ll be cowtowing to their wives, it’ll be you.”

Qin Mu’s eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced towards the ICU.

“Ranran is inside talking to Bai Xiaoxiao right now, Ah Feng. If you want to see her, you can wait until Ranran comes out.”

Mo Xiuchen also turned his head to look back. Luo Haofeng huffed awkwardly, “I came here to tell you about Cheng Jia’s performance tonight, not specifically to see Bai Xiaoxiao.”

“Then let’s go, I’ve been working for more than ten hours, I’m really tired now, you can give me a ride home.”

Qin Mu prodded Luo Haofeng with his elbow and chuckled.

“You can take a taxi home by yourself. I’m not here to see Bai Xiaoxiao, but I do want to check on Wen Ran. With Bai Xiaoxiao in this state, she should be alright, shouldn’t she?”

Luo Haofeng pretended to be concerned about Wen Ran.

Mo Xiuchen replied, visibly annoyed, “Ranran does not need your concern.”
