“Ranran!”

A wave of surprise swept over MO Xiuchen’s gaze, his tall stature suddenly rising from the sofa, his voice trembling slightly through his thin lips.

He never expected that Wen Ran would wake up suddenly.

On the other end of the phone, Gu Kai had heard the door sound just now, and at this moment, hearing MO Xiuchen yell out ‘Ranran’, his mind buzzed, he blurted out, “MO Xiuchen, what’s going on?”

“I’ll talk to you later.”

MO Xiuchen dropped these words into the phone, and then threw the phone onto the sofa, striding towards Wen Ran.

His heart was filled with tumultuous waves, his narrow eyes anxiously and worriedly staring at the woman standing at the door, her face as white as snow, her eyes filled with tears; it made his heart ache.

Wen Ran stood at the door, her body clad only in pajamas, trembled lightly; her slightly parted lips, too, trembled; and her heart trembled even more.

It seemed as though a thousand horses were stampeding through her mind, and as MO Xiuchen approached her, she couldn’t speak or move, she just stood rigidly at the door, as though frozen in place.

In a blink of an eye, MO Xiuchen was in front of her, he reached out to hold her hand, his other large hand gripping her shoulder. Perhaps his touch awakened Wen Ran, for her face changed color and a flicker of a mysterious emotion in her eyes broke free from him.

She stepped back.

“Ranran, will you hear me out?”

MO Xiuchen’s heart tightened severely, he looked at the woman in front of him with a sorrowful gaze. She had obviously heard everything.

He extended his hand towards her again, gingerly approaching her. Wen Ran’s tears suddenly fell, her tear-filled eyes unable to see him clearly, she just shook her head wildly, saying, “No, I don’t believe, I don’t believe what you said.”

MO Xiuchen’s heart ached suddenly, her tears rolling down her cheeks seemed to have turned into scalding iron water in that instant, branding his heart with each drop.

He understood her feelings – he had always been worried that she would have a hard time accepting the truth of her background; that joyful family she grew up in, her parents who loved her to the core, and her brother who cradled her with care as if he was her protector, turned out to have no blood ties with her. How could she believe this?

Moreover, who did MO Xiuchen talk about this on the phone with? What would that imply? They all know, they all know.

The only one who didn’t know was her.

Her heart hurt so much, so much that she couldn’t breathe. Uncontrollably, the vision of her parents dying in front of her eyes in that car accident flashed in front of her eyes, the car engulfed in a massive fire, consuming her mom and dad.

They were the best parents in the world. How could they not be her parents?

MO Xiuchen finally caught her, when she retreated to the door, with nowhere else to go, MO Xiuchen dominantly pulled her into his arms. His long arms encircled her waist, and with his other hand, he gently wiped the tear stains from her face and said softly, “Ranran, calm down, let me explain first, okay?”

“No, I won’t listen, you lied to me, you must have lied to me.”

Wen Ran shook her head, she couldn’t break free from his grasp, but her tears continued to flow.

MO Xiuchen couldn’t wipe away all her tears, so he chose to first soothe her emotions, saying apologetically, “Ranran, this time, I won’t lie to you, in fact, haven’t you had doubts yourself?”

At his words, Wen Ran’s body stiffened suddenly. Her teary eyes watery as they stared at him, her mind seemingly lost in thought.

MO Xiuchen gently looked back at her, his deep eyes filled with heartache and affection. He explained softly, word by word, “Ranran, I didn’t tell you right away because I know you love your parents and your brother very much. I have been hesitating, wanting to find the right time to tell you.”

Wen Ran bit her lip tightly. She wanted to control herself not to cry, but her tears wouldn’t listen, pouring down like water from a broken dam.

How could she not love her parents? In her memory, they loved her so much. When she first came to G City, many old ladies said that her brother looked a lot like their parents, but she didn’t. Some even teased her, saying she was picked up.

She cried and went home, asking her mother if she was picked up. Her mother told her that she and her brother were both born to her and also said that she was the best gift God had given them.

Later, her mother confronted those gossipy women, asking them not to tease their child in that way.

She still remembers one night when she had a fever at two in the morning. It was in the dead of winter, her parents, without even changing, just putting on their sleepwear, carried her, rushed in the car straight to the hospital. Later, her brother actually chased them to the hospital on his bicycle.

That night, her father, mother, and brother stayed up with her at the hospital all night.

She dozed off with the IV in, but they couldn’t sleep, keeping vigil by her bed…

There were so many happy and beautiful memories; she could go on for three days and three nights and still wouldn’t exhaust them all.

She only felt that she was the happiest person in the world. She was fortunate to have been born into such a joyous family with parents and a brother who loved her so much.

But now he was suddenly saying that she was not their daughter, not their sister; her world seemed to collapse in that moment.

MO Xiuchen suppressed the pain in his heart and led her by the hand out of the study, back to the bed.

Wen Ran simply sat there, clueless, not knowing if she caught any of his words.

She allowed him to lead her to the bedside, like a puppet, and sat her on the edge of the bed. His heart ached at the sight of her, and he turned around, retrieved a cape from the cloakroom, and draped it around her.

“Ranran!”

MO Xiuchen crouched down in front of her in order to converse better.

His large palm secured her soft little hands, the sight of her dazed appearance piercing his heart like a needle.

He called her name softly, her eyes blinked, and tears rolled down. He didn’t know what he had to do to stop her tears.

MO Xiuchen patiently wiped away her tears, speaking softly, “Ranran, don’t be upset, even if President Wen and Madam Wen are not your biological parents, and even if Wen Jin isn’t your real brother, they still remain your closest family. Nobody can change this fact.”

Wen Ran seemed to blink, her heart stirred by his words.

But she hadn’t fully recovered her senses, she was still lost in her own world.

MO Xiuchen crouched in front of her, his voice resounding softly in her ears, “Now that you know your origin, you just have one more family, a few more people who love you, this isn’t a bad thing. I promise..”
