Ember Legion

In the morning Xiao Sui’s first act was to feel along the bench. The charcoal was there, set at the bench’s edge the night before when Wen Heng worked it out of her grip. She picked it up and inspected the tip. It had worn down a little. She set it back and went to wash her face. The harbor had known two days of peace now, and people woke later for it. The shelter’s shanties came alive one by one; the water-carriers lined up at the river quay; someone’s porridge broke into a boil first, and steam wandered into the morning fog.

Out on the market street the fish stall was there again, and a squabble over two coppers carried half a block. Chen Jin came back from the grain desk and found her sitting with the charcoal in her fist. ”Tip’s worn?”

”Still good.” She tucked the stub behind her ear, the way carpenters carry theirs. ”Brother, am I going to write at the bench again today?”

”Not the bench today.” Chen Jin said. ”School.”

The word had gone around the night before. There was an old man in the shelter, a bookkeeper once, in a steamship office in the years when steamship offices kept books—a clean, upright hand, and not one cargo manifest or ticket had gone through those fingers wrong. Age had taken his legs, and he had settled in the shelter. Before the siege he taught a few children their characters, out of a primer he had copied in his own hand, its edges gone soft from turning. The siege stopped the lessons. The big children went to haul stone, the small ones to scrub shell casings, and the primer sat at the bottom of a box for more than forty days.

With the harbor quiet these two days, the old man had let word out: lessons at night, no fees, bring your own paper and brush—and if you have none, he has some. It traveled mouth to mouth. The women settled it over the water queue, whose child was going; the man at the grain scale said, in passing, that he’d set two sheets aside; by dark there were twenty-some names on the list. Nobody could say exactly why it never went up as a notice. Only that this was a different kind of thing from the things on notices, and the two shouldn’t be mixed.

The paper was gathered in the daytime. Clearing out the harbor office turned up two baskets of pages that had never burned—from the room Bi Chengzhang left behind, out of drawer backs, box bottoms, the space behind the lampshade: old documents, of which few could be written on, and many could not. The man who managed the office couldn’t tell whose paper it now was, so he came to ask. Chen Jin said, ”Paper a child can learn characters on is good paper. Take it over.”

When the baskets were delivered, a note written in the manager’s own hand went along on the rim, stating where the paper came from and how many sheets. These days anything that moves carries its provenance with it, and he kept that rule better than anyone.

The granary sent over a stack of offcuts too, trims from cutting ledger paper, some narrow, some wide. The old man took both lots and sat on a bench in front of the shanties, cutting sheet by sheet into palm-size squares, corners squared, stacked flat. He had his way with the blade: follow the fold, one clean stroke, never a second—”A second stroke fuzzes the edge, and the child’s pen catches.” Xiao Sui watched for a while, then took a turn. Her first sheet came out crooked; the second came out straight. She stacked her own little pile beside his, not mixed in.

When he came to a sheet with writing on it, he set it aside: ”Sheets with words stay, for reading aloud. Sheets without sentences, cut for practice.”

Then he came to half a page with a corner of red on it—the ring mark’s edge. He stopped. He didn’t cut it. He drew it out alone and pressed it under the basket bottom, two pebbles holding the corner down. Xiao Sui asked what would become of that one. ”That one has a stamp on it. Tomorrow it goes back to the harbor office. The stamp belongs to the officials; the paper was theirs to throw away. The stamp still belongs to them.”

Lessons began at dusk. The old goods shed in the shanty quarter had been cleared out, a door plank laid across two benches for a table and wiped down twice, a basket of cut paper stacked at one end. Twenty-some children came, the oldest twelve or thirteen, the youngest too short to reach the plank and kneeling on the bench to make up the height. The big ones made room for the small ones without being told; there weren’t enough benches, and the ones who couldn’t reach got the seats first. The children from the reloading line came too, their hands still smelling of the salve, and scrubbed them on their trousers at the door.

The boy with the empty birdcage came as well, cage in hand. There was nowhere to hang it, so he rose on his toes and hung it on a nail in the rafter. There was no bird in the cage. There was half a charcoal stub. The old man looked at the cage and asked nothing; he pointed the boy to the cleanest spot, deepest in.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

When the women who had delivered the children wouldn’t leave, crowding the door frame to watch, the old man turned and said, ”Grown-ups who want characters—queue behind.” The women laughed, gave it up, and went home, trimming all the lampwicks brighter on their way out.

The first lesson: your own name.

The old man wrote one character on the door plank. Chen. ”The first character a person learns is their own name. Hereafter, when you draw grain, when you draw wages, when you press your print—when they ask can you write, you say yes. What you write is this. A name on paper, and the person is on the account.”

The children copied it. One little girl couldn’t get hers down and was about to cry; Xiao Sui went over, crouched by her bench, and walked her hand through it once. ”It doesn’t have to look like the teacher’s. Your name counts when you’re the one writing it.” The girl finished—a crooked name on the sheet—looked at it a long time, folded the paper, and put it inside her coat.

Beside her a boy from the casing line looked at what he’d written, then wrote it again. ”Easier than the marks on shell bottoms,” he said.

The old man read characters aloud, one at a time, and the children followed. Characters you see every day: person, hand, mountain, water, rice, wall. Nothing far off. ”A character is like a person,” he said. ”Learn the ones you meet daily first.” His chanting had an old rhythm to it, even, one stroke at a time—nothing like the tally-call at the grain desk, and nothing like the proclamation readers droning through a decree.

When Chen Jin came for Xiao Sui he stood a while outside the window and did not go in. Inside, the sound of charcoal on paper, a soft sifting; the children followed the recitation, voices low. There were mistakes. The teacher didn’t scold; he took a wrist and walked it through, and they tried again. Outside, water on the posts, one knock, and another. For the while he stood there, the harbor made no other sound. The night watch changed at the lane mouth, and even those steps went quiet past the shed, and only resumed their weight once beyond.

Lessons ended with full dark. The children stowed their name sheets and drifted home one by one. On the way one held his paper up for the aunt who’d come to fetch him; she couldn’t read it, and leaned in to look all the same, and said it was good. The birdcage boy took his charcoal back out of the cage but left the cage on its nail. Tomorrow he’d come again.

Xiao Sui left last. She carried the paper basket into the back room and stacked the next evening’s sheets, and then produced a booklet to show her brother: offcut paper, stitched at the fold with a thread that wandered. ”A book for the teacher. Too neat looks like the officials’ work.” The old man turned through it, said nothing, and took it—set it on top of the primer.

Wen Heng came by after her night rounds of the wounded and stopped at the lane mouth to watch the lamp go out. ”In the shelter today,” she said, ”those casing-line kids had ink all over their hands. I asked where from. They wouldn’t say. Held it in, smiling.” A pause. ”Something good they can hold in till lessons end—that’s not a bad thing.” She lifted her case and went; the latch clicked.

On the way home Xiao Sui walked ahead, then looked back. ”Brother, what was the first character you learned to write?”

”My own name.”

”Who taught you?”

”Nobody. Down the pit, everyone had a tag. Name on it, number under. You look at it enough days, you can write it.”

”Oh,” said Xiao Sui. ”Then you’re better than the teacher—he has to teach. I can write plenty now. The notice words I’ve had for ages: curfew, ration, requisition. You stand under a notice while they read it out loud, and once is enough to fix them.”

Chen Jin didn’t answer. He walked a stretch. ”Two years back, someone should have taught you your own names first.”

And only after it was out did he hear that the sentence had no subject. Who, exactly? The pit’s children didn’t go to school—the day you followed your father down was the day you were grown. And the town’s children before the siege ran the streets, and nobody minded this either. The first characters his sister knew by heart were notice characters—the characters you use to hold people in. He said, ”Go tomorrow. And every evening after.”

”I go every night anyway.” Xiao Sui said. ”The teacher’s got me cutting paper. Says it costs the teacher no eyes and the children no hands—a fair trade.” She thought, and added, ”He lent me the primer to copy. When I’ve copied it through, I can lead the recitation for him.”

”You’re twelve.”

”He was ten when he led recitation for his teacher.” She said it with full authority. ”And he says the one who leads has to be beyond getting it wrong. So I’ll copy it twice tonight.”

Later, when Xiao Sui was asleep, Chen Jin lit the lamp and checked the bar on the door. Coming back, he saw a sheet of paper at the edge of her pillow, palm-size, corners cut square. Her name on it, traced three times, truer each time. And in the corner of the sheet, much smaller, another character in charcoal with two strokes missing—Jin, the character from the wooden sign at the grain desk door. She had copied it off the sign. It hadn’t come out right. She had copied it anyway.

He moved the lamp back a little and looked at it a while. Then he folded the paper the way it had been folded and set it back at the pillow’s edge, with the corner weighted. The receipt inside his own coat was folded the same way, and kept in the same kind of place.

That night the shelter slept sound, and not one person talked in their sleep.

He didn’t open the panel. The account hadn’t moved. It didn’t need opening.
