Ember Legion

The red text was still on the panel when the sky turned pale.

Chen Jin hadn’t dimmed the panel he’d left open through the night. The wind dragged it between bright and dark, and [Power rating: raised one tier] lay open in the morning light. The men coming up to take the wall saw it, said nothing, leaned their guns against the embrasure, and went to feel their own stretch of wall. The tier Broken-Tooth had eaten out of the night before now sat in every man’s chest like a weight.

Embers still sat at 1415, not a digit moved—the seven Hound-class beyond the wall had gone into Broken-Tooth’s gut, and the system logged not a word. The rifle was still six hundred eighty-five short; he looked at that line for two breaths, then turned the panel face down. The gun could wait till North Wall was past.

This tier wasn’t a reward. It was a price tag the system had hung on Broken-Tooth, and it gave no word on how to fight it. It counted only the kills under his own hand, never the fat the enemy ate.

A tall, thin recruit stepped up to the panel and traced the red line with a finger. ”This is left for us to read,” he said, and turned to Chen Jin. Chen Jin didn’t answer. He’d left that line for the morning men, and the morning men had read it true. The wall hadn’t fallen. The words had stood first.

Lei Changgeng crouched at the old breach spot, his signal mallet at his feet. ”It didn’t come this morning,” Lei Changgeng said, looking up at the sky. ”Wrong. It changed its bones. First time it hasn’t rushed before dawn.”

Chen Jin let it pass. He stared out at the shoal beyond the water skin—Broken-Tooth was gone. But the swarm on the shoal was a size larger than the night before, plates layered over plates, like shells the tide had left on the beach. It had fed its soldiers into its own body and fattened the column with them.

Behind North Wall sat half a city. Old folk and children packed the alleys; the wounded queued down to the waterline. Chen Jin had counted it—fewer than three hundred could stand the wall, and the shoal Broken-Tooth brought had no far edge. He didn’t say it to anyone. Saying it wouldn’t stop a bug. Better to send one more into the seam.

Day one, Broken-Tooth came at noon.

It pressed the whole shoal against North Wall, picking the half-zhang of old brick that hadn’t quite caved. Chen Jin held the men behind the gap, bayonet into the seam, heat-gun burning the roots. The bugs didn’t pick men, they picked walls, surging up the slope, carapace clicking on carapace. Chen Jin’s first bayonet went in steady—he’d killed too many of these to miss the seam even with his eyes shut. Bug corpses stacked three deep under the wall and got trampled into a ramp.

Lei Changgeng tapped the rail up on the embrasure, two short and one long, loud across half the city—for the far side to hear, and for those behind to know North Wall still stood. It was the method he’d set on his sixteenth day on the wall; this was the third time he’d struck it, and the mallet’s grip was worn bright.

The sun leaned past west and the bugs fell back half a li, then pressed again. Chen Jin’s men rotated two shifts; he didn’t leave the wall. The heat-gun’s fuel ran low, so he went all bayonet—close work, sparing fuel, sparing noise.

Chen Jin sent three Hound-class into the seam with his own hands and dragged two living children out from under the breach. The panel lit twice: [Kill confirmed: Hound-class x1. +10 Embers.], then [Rescue +1]. He didn’t look again. He knew the drill, but the bugs that night were heavier than the night before, and the ramp stood half a foot above the embrasure.

Then, past midnight, Broken-Tooth pulled back. The swarm on the shoal scattered all at once and drew back into the water skin. For a stretch there was no sound on North Wall—no horn, no mallet, not even wind. Chen Jin heard his own heartbeat, one beat after another, clearer than the rail. That wasn’t victory. It was the thing catching its breath. He gripped the bayonet and waited a half hour, and what came wasn’t bugs but his own shadow stretched long by the moon.

He understood then why it had pulled back. It wasn’t spending strength. It was measuring North Wall—which stretch was old, which was hollow, which men would break first. Three days, three methods, each one tighter than the last. You couldn’t hold this thing with ferocity. You outlasted it.

Day two, Broken-Tooth changed its method. No more ramps. It dug under the breach. The grille-root on the far side of the waterline had been gnawed into a hole, and the hollow half of the wall’s base showed its stones above the water, black from soaking. Chen Jin went down to the waterline and knelt in knee-deep water, the gun barrel too hot to hold, cooling it in the mud between throws. Bugs came up the hole; he waited at the mouth, bayonet down, and sent each one the moment its carapace showed.

All day he didn’t straighten his back. He sent four into the seam, and a plate cut a line across the back of his hand; he let the blood mix with the mud and called it nothing. His eyelids fought him through the third night, and he pressed the bayonet hilt to his temple to hold.

Lei Changgeng lay at the waterline and watched for a long while, then threw one line back. ”Roots are hollow. Won’t last days,” Lei Changgeng said. Chen Jin heard it and didn’t answer. He’d known it when he went down. There was just nowhere to retreat.

He’d missed one thing—the river at the wall’s foot had risen half a palm since the night before. No one reported it, and he’d forgotten to look. The water came around from the East Sluice. Last night Broken-Tooth had ”moved what it watched closer”—maybe what it watched wasn’t this brick on North Wall but the road under the water it had walked the whole night.

An inch of water softened the wall’s base another inch. The old brick he knelt on had hollow roots—he’d stepped on that stone in daylight, and the space beneath was empty, water pushing up through the seam, and he’d taken it for soft mud. Broken-Tooth was digging brick seams, but what it wanted was North Wall’s nerve.

Day three, the breach truly caved half a zhang.

Da Liu led men hauling mud bags, stacking them onto the gap, the cloth on his shoulder worn through to blood. Chen Jin looked once and didn’t stop them—North Wall wanted speed, not clean. Mud bags piled at the top, cage-stone lowered on cable, the mason climbed the breach and struck the old brick; the echo came back hollow—that stretch of wall had had its heart eaten by water. Cage-stone crashed into the gap, throwing up a stinking splash.

Chen Jin wiped his face and couldn’t tell sweat from water. He crushed the half cigarette in his palm—three days without a light, afraid the flame would draw bugs. Through three rotations he took the last watch, throat raw, hand steady. He pinned a War-hound in the breach seam, bayonet through the neck joint, and the panel lit: [Kill confirmed: War-hound class x1. +50 Embers.]. Two Hound-class drilled in after it and he sent those too—the first time he’d pinned one dead in the seam; the earlier ones had fallen on the slope.

Xiaosui came up with reloads, and he knew the chalk mark on the shell base—mutual check, one round against the next. Chen Jin’s eyes were red through the third night, and he snapped at her: ”Take these down. The wall doesn’t need your hands.” The words were out before he could stop them, and he regretted it at once. The city had held to its third day on hands like hers, loading round by round. The bowl of noodles he owed Xiaosui took another mark.

Xiaosui didn’t move. She set the ammo box down and crouched behind the embrasure, pressing shells into the clip one by one. Chen Jin saw her hands shake—not from fear, from tiredness. He opened his mouth, and the apology never came. On North Wall, an apology wouldn’t buy a single shell.

Wen Heng came up in the dark and pinched each man’s ears in turn. ”Stuffed,” Wen Heng said. ”Stay off the windward side.” Then she took her box down the wall, same as the two nights before. At Chen Jin she paused one breath longer and said nothing—the stuffiness in his ears was heavier than the night before.

Lei Changgeng turned the signal mallet in his palm and knocked it against the embrasure. ”Broken-Tooth changed its bones,” Lei Changgeng said, ”but it still picks its spot. It gnawed North Wall three days without breaking it. Guess which gate next?”

Chen Jin watched the water skin. Broken-Tooth wasn’t at North Wall anymore. It had learned, it had changed, and now it was time to move. Lin Yuan Holds carried weight in his mouth for the first time—the city had to hold, had to survive the break-day, had to live past ten thousand. North Wall, this gate, he’d borne it. The rifle at two thousand one hundred still hung in his reckoning, five hundred forty-three short—but the thing beyond the wall no longer kept the copper’s ledger. Three days without sleep, his eyelids heavy, his mind clear: North Wall’s gate was shut; the East Sluice’s water was already rising.

He thought of the red line he’d left the morning men the night before, and now it was his turn to leave words for those past midnight.

”It won’t come back,” Chen Jin said. ”Next gate is the East Sluice.”

The panel logged the whole three days—nine Hound-class, one War-hound, two rescues—and the last line held: [Embers: 1557].
