TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

The second Internal Organ tempering was harder, though not in the way Joe had expected. The Heart had already been strengthened once, and repeating the circulation that had worked during the first cycle produced less useful adaptation while placing more strain on the organ. The Greyspine inheritance had warned him that repeated tempering was not simple repetition. Every successful cycle changed the body that the next cycle had to work upon, which meant the same route had to reach deeper without disturbing the structure already established. Joe spent two days testing small adjustments to pressure, circulation depth, and timing before finding a combination that produced clean improvement. As soon as the effort became valid, One Effort Equals a Hundred multiplied the result far beyond what the amount of work should have accomplished.

He ended the session there. Internal Organ cultivation was settling into a rhythm that differed sharply from the earlier realms. Joe still benefited enormously from productive effort, but the useful portion of that effort occupied surprisingly little of his calendar. A successful refinement might take only a short session, after which several days could pass before another attempt became worthwhile. During those intervals, the most productive things he could do were eat properly, sleep, study, and allow the body to finish adapting. Perfect Health reduced the strain and repaired damage far faster than an ordinary practitioner could manage. Perfect Body helped the strengthened tissue settle into the rest of his physical structure, while No Regression preserved every legitimate improvement already earned. None of those talents changed the fact that an organ still adapting to one refinement should not be asked to begin another.

Joe had spent years learning that correct effort was rarely wasted. Internal Organ cultivation was teaching him the other half of that lesson: once further effort stopped being correct, continuing simply because he was capable of doing so was no longer diligence. Montclair saw very little of his private progress.

At the annex, Joe remained publicly within his first Internal Organ tempering. His Heart advanced over months instead of days before the physicians approved the transition to the lungs. Both the instructor and medical staff were pleased with the stability of his progress, and the Foundation mastery already recorded in his file gave them a reasonable explanation for the control he displayed when moving between organ routes. Joe followed their schedule carefully. When the annex prescribed rest, he rested. When another supervised session was approved, he showed enough improvement to justify continued support without revealing anything that the staff would have difficulty explaining.

Privately, however, the distance between the two records continued to widen.

By the time Montclair believed his lungs were approaching completion, Joe had already finished Internal Organ Tempering II. The second full cycle added less raw strength than the first. Montclair’s old records suggested an average increase of roughly four hundred and fifty kilograms of whole-body output per organ at this stage, and Joe’s result remained close enough to confirm the pattern. The smaller increase did not concern him. What interested him was the reason behind it. Each completed cycle permanently changed the organ that the next refinement encountered. His third Heart tempering would not be the first Heart tempering repeated for a third time. It would begin with tissue that had already undergone two substantial transformations, and the method would have to draw further improvement from something that was no longer remotely ordinary.

The third cycle demonstrated that difference even more clearly. Joe needed more productive cultivation than he had during the second, although active training still consumed only a small portion of the total time. Recovery increasingly determined the pace.

By then, he had stopped expecting the five organs to behave alike. The Heart responded predictably once he understood the deeper route, while the lungs became manageable after he learned how breathing altered the circulation pattern. The liver tolerated gradual increases in strain better than he had expected. The kidneys remained less forgiving. During one private session, discomfort appeared earlier than it should have. The circulation itself was not wrong, and the attempt had already produced useful progress, but the response of the organ began deteriorating before Joe reached the point he had intended.

He withdrew immediately. Perfect Health could have dealt with the resulting strain much sooner than the four days Joe eventually waited. The injury was not the reason for the delay. He was waiting for the deeper adaptation beneath it to finish.

When he tested the route again, the refinement completed cleanly. That experience ended whatever remained of his earlier habit of estimating later cycles from the amount of active work required during the first. He could make rough predictions about productive sessions, but the calendar increasingly belonged to recovery, and the Greyspine inheritance itself became noticeably more cautious after the fourth complete tempering.

Several months after entering the realm, Joe privately completed Internal Organ Tempering III. Fifteen successful organ refinements had now been incorporated into his body, which meant he had reached the minimum internal condition required for Acquired. Joe remained seated in Edwin’s guest room after the final spleen refinement, waiting until his circulation and breathing had settled before examining the change more closely. Under the conventional route, this was the point where a practitioner could stop repeating Internal Organs and prepare for the next realm. Three complete cycles were enough for the body to support the transformation that produced Acquired Energy. For most people, especially those without immense resources or an inheritance designed around deeper repetition, continuing past that threshold offered diminishing physical returns while increasing both expense and risk.

Joe had no reason to make the ordinary choice. The third cycle had added roughly another two thousand kilograms of whole-body strength, but raw force was no longer the most interesting part of the change. His five organs now operated with a degree of coordination that had not existed after the first or second tempering. Circulation, breathing, recovery, and the movement of Blood Energy were beginning to function as parts of one developed internal system rather than as separate improvements. For the first time, Joe could understand physically why Acquired became possible here.

The lower realms had strengthened the body in stages. Skin produced Blood Energy, Muscle supported its movement, and Bone provided a frame capable of transmitting the force generated by an increasingly powerful body. Internal Organ cultivation strengthened the systems that sustained all of it. After three complete cycles, those layers had finally reached the minimum condition necessary for another type of energy to emerge. Joe had no intention of attempting the transition yet.

Once the final spleen refinement stabilized, he opened the Greyspine inheritance to the fourth cycle and continued. His pharmaceutical studies advanced much more slowly than his cultivation, which Joe considered entirely reasonable. The annex library contained more information about damaged spiritual herbs than he had expected. Once he stopped reading only the formal processing manuals and began examining old case notes as well, the reason became obvious. Spiritual plants did not always reach immortal cultivators intact. Roots were damaged during harvesting, poorly sealed containers allowed potency to escape, and improper preparation could ruin the properties that made a plant valuable for qi cultivation while leaving much of its ordinary medicinal material behind.

Mortal pharmacists had spent generations trying to salvage whatever remained. Joe paid as much attention to failed procedures as successful ones. Excessive heat tended to destroy useful compounds along with the spiritual structure. Grinding increased the exposed surface area but often accelerated dissipation. Certain alcohol extractions preserved ordinary medicinal components while allowing a large portion of the spiritual potency to escape. More aggressive treatments could dismantle the material even further, though conventional pharmacists usually regarded that as failure unless enough medicinal value survived to justify the process. Their purpose was preservation.

Joe’s question was different. If the structure carrying spiritual energy were deliberately dismantled, would all useful energy disappear with it, or could some portion survive in a form a martial body could tolerate? The six spirit stones remained locked away in Edwin’s house. Joe knew far too little to experiment on something so valuable and difficult to replace. Instead, he purchased tiny quantities of already damaged spiritual herb residue through legitimate annex channels and used those for his early tests. Most attempts produced nothing useful. One batch decomposed badly enough that Edwin insisted the process never be repeated in the kitchen. Another damaged a glass vessel. A third left behind a dull brown sediment with less medicinal value than the material had possessed before Joe began.

Joe recorded every failure. None became a success merely because the work had been careful, but valid experimentation still taught him which component had broken first, which treatment accelerated dissipation, and where his assumptions had been wrong. Internal Organ Tempering IV brought Joe to the edge of the inheritance’s well-documented territory.

The average increase in raw strength declined again, settling near three hundred and fifty kilograms per organ, but by then the size of each gain had become less important than the increasing demands of recovery. The fourth cycle took considerably longer to stabilize than the third. There were days when Joe felt completely healthy and could find no obvious sign of injury, yet the deeper response of an organ still told him that another refinement would be premature. Earlier in his cultivation, the disappearance of pain might have been enough to convince him that he was ready.

Not anymore. His talents could repair damage and integrate legitimate change with extraordinary efficiency, but they could not force biological adaptation to occur out of sequence. An organ could be healed without being ready.

By the time the fourth spleen stabilized, he understood why even wealthy martial families did not encourage repeated Internal Organ tempering casually. Money could provide medicine, physicians, food, and experienced instruction. None of those things made reckless cultivation sensible. The fifth cycle changed the character of the Greyspine inheritance itself. Earlier sections had been written with confidence. Circulation pressures, warning signs, and recovery markers were given directly, with enough supporting explanation that a disciplined practitioner could follow them without much interpretation. Beyond the fourth tempering, certainty gave way to conditions.

The inheritance warned that pressure should be reduced if circulation changed unexpectedly, that recovery periods would vary more sharply between individuals, and that every previous adaptation needed to be checked before the next cycle began. It repeatedly cautioned against copying another practitioner’s successful schedule simply because the same sequence had worked for him. Several old measurements had been revised more than once. Others appeared only as wide ranges. Montclair practitioners had reached these stages before, but not in numbers large enough to turn their experiences into a dependable standard.

Joe found that more useful than discouraging. Beyond the well-documented cycles, careful experimentation mattered more because the inheritance could no longer supply a dependable schedule. When Joe altered a circulation route slightly, he could understand what the change actually affected. Reducing Blood Energy pressure showed which portions of an already strengthened organ stopped responding. Extending a recovery interval revealed whether the additional time improved integration or merely delayed the next useful session.

Blind guessing remained dangerous; careful work still taught him something. Internal Organ V consumed more calendar time than IV. VI took longer still, and by the seventh cycle, Joe spent far more time recovering than actively tempering. The waiting did not bother him as much as it might have earlier in his cultivation. Those intervals gave him time to continue his medical studies, refine his pharmaceutical experiments, and maintain the public training schedule that still had to remain believable at the annex.

Montclair, meanwhile, became increasingly pleased with the version of Joe it could observe. His public Heart refinement completed cleanly. The lungs followed, and repeated medical examinations showed stable recovery as he progressed into the liver. His medicine allowance increased once, then again after the physicians confirmed that the additional resources were translating into measurable progress without creating unnecessary complications. Nobody treated his advancement as impossible. From the recruitment office’s perspective, the trial was producing exactly the type of result it had been designed to identify. Joe appeared to be a talented martial practitioner who had spent years without access to the level of support available to established families and was now responding exceptionally well to reliable food, medicine, physicians, and instruction.

When his public kidney refinement began, Joe overheard two instructors discussing the possibility that he might finish his first complete Internal Organ cycle within a year. One of them glanced through the medical record before speaking. ”If the kidneys and spleen behave like the first three, he’ll make it.”

The older instructor beside him did not sound as certain. ”Maybe. Don’t start writing the report before the body agrees with you. The kidneys have ruined prettier projections than this.”

”The recovery numbers are good.”

”They are. That’s why I’m saying maybe instead of no.”

Joe continued preparing for the session while they spoke. The first instructor looked toward him. ”You heard us?”

”Yes.”

”Then forget the part where he said you might finish early.”

The older man gave him an unimpressed look. ”I said no such thing.”

”You implied it.”

”I implied that his organs decide the schedule. If he remembers that, he has a chance of keeping the numbers you like so much.”

Joe understood the point without needing another warning.

”I’ll follow the physician’s clearance.”

”Good,” the older instructor said. ”Then perhaps the report will eventually deserve the optimism.”

The conversation ended there, and training resumed.

Privately, Joe had already begun Internal Organ Tempering VIII. The contrast between the cultivation Montclair observed and the one actually occurring inside his body had become large enough that Joe could no longer treat concealment as a minor inconvenience. Every later refinement increased the difference in strength, recovery, and internal condition that he had to hide during examinations. His first meaningful pharmaceutical result appeared during the recovery period after the eighth Heart refinement. The material itself was almost worthless, nothing more than damaged residue from a low-grade spiritual herb. Joe had already processed similar samples many times, but this attempt combined several extraction stages with controlled heating and separation before he deliberately degraded the fraction a conventional pharmacist would have tried hardest to preserve.

Most of the remaining spiritual potency dissipated. Joe had expected that. What he had not expected was the faint film that remained along the bottom of the container. He examined it without touching it directly at first. The familiar spiritual pressure was gone, and bringing his hand closer produced none of the uncomfortable external sensation associated with intact spiritual material. That did not make the residue safe. Joe had accumulated enough failures by then to know that a new result was not automatically a useful one. Rather than ingesting it, he spent several days testing how the material interacted with ordinary medicinal compounds. The residue mixed poorly, but it did mix, which already distinguished it from the substance he had begun with.

Joe still had no evidence that anything useful remained, and it was entirely possible that he had simply created harmless waste. The experiment had nevertheless established something important: deliberate degradation could change the behavior of a spiritual material without reducing every component to nothing. The question had become narrower. He no longer needed to ask whether transformation was possible. He needed to determine what survived, whether that remnant carried usable energy, and whether a martial body could interact with it safely. The spirit stones remained untouched. Internal Organ VIII eventually required almost two months to complete, though active cultivation occupied only a small fraction of that period. Most of the calendar belonged to recovery and integration.

By then, the first cycle seemed almost simple in comparison. Each organ had already undergone seven complete refinements, and every new attempt had to reach deeper without destabilizing the accumulated work beneath it. Errors that would have meant little during the second cycle became increasingly important at the eighth. Perfect Body mattered more with every repetition. Without its constant integration of legitimate changes, Joe suspected the later temperings might eventually have become impossible regardless of how strongly his other talents accelerated productive cultivation. He completed the eighth spleen refinement shortly before his nineteenth birthday and then allowed the body to rest.

After nine days, he tested the Heart route and found the organ healthy but not ready. Several days later, the deeper response remained incomplete, so Joe continued waiting rather than allowing impatience to dictate the beginning of the final cycle. Only when the Heart accepted the route cleanly did he begin Internal Organ Tempering IX. The ninth tempering felt different from the first successful effort. The difficulty had increased again, but that was not what caught Joe’s attention. The changes were becoming less isolated.

When the Heart adapted, faint responses appeared elsewhere. The lungs adjusted subtly, the liver followed, and even the supporting structures around the organs seemed to redistribute themselves around the new balance. Joe ended the session after that first successful effort and spent two days examining the result before continuing. The inheritance did not describe the phenomenon clearly enough for him to trust momentum over observation.

When the Heart finally stabilized and Joe moved to the lungs, the same relationship appeared again. Strengthening one organ produced smaller adjustments throughout the rest of the internal system, and the effect became more pronounced as the cycle progressed. The ninth liver required nearly a week to settle. The kidneys took longer.

By the time Joe began the final spleen refinement, he could feel that the ninth cycle was no longer strengthening five organs independently. Every successful change was altering the relationship between all of them. He performed the final refinement alone in Edwin’s guest room. Blood Energy followed the spleen route cleanly. Joe completed one valid effort, waited for the response to stabilize, then continued only when nothing indicated that the system was becoming unstable. The remaining resistance gradually diminished. For a moment, Joe wondered whether he had reduced the pressure too far.

Then the entire internal system answered. The Heart adjusted first, followed by the lungs, liver, and kidneys. The change spread outward from the spleen until every organ refined through nine complete cycles began settling against the others. The response continued beyond the organs. His Bone structure shifted subtly beneath the new internal balance, and Muscle followed as Perfect Body integrated the deeper transformation through the layers surrounding it. Skin adjusted last, completing a process that felt fundamentally different from the independent gains of the previous cycles. Joe remained motionless while the changes continued.

The body was no longer simply adding another refinement to what already existed. The accumulated improvements of the Internal Organ realm were beginning to function as one coherent system.

When his strength changed, the increase was large enough that Joe’s fingers tightened reflexively against the edge of the bed. The wood creaked. He released it immediately and remained seated until the transformation finished settling. Internal Organ Tempering IX had reached Great Completion. Joe had expected the ninth cycle to be the final repetition of a process he already understood. Instead, completing it had altered the relationship between every organ refinement that came before it and reinforced the system as a whole. He waited until the change stabilized before attempting any serious measurement.

The result confirmed what he had felt. The combined contribution of the Internal Organ realm had been reinforced as one integrated structure, producing an increase far beyond what another ordinary late-cycle refinement should have provided. Great Completion was not merely the ninth entry on the same progression. It was the point where the accumulated work finally settled into something more complete than the sum of its individual stages.

The following morning, Joe reported to the Montclair annex for an examination belonging to an entirely different cultivation record.

Publicly, he had finally reached the end of the spleen. The examination lasted nearly an hour. The physician repeated several measurements before asking Joe to circulate Blood Energy through each of the five routes Montclair believed he had completed. The instructor joined them midway through and remained for the final spleen circulation. Joe revealed only what belonged to his public cultivation. Months of practice had made restraint familiar, but it was no longer effortless. His actual body bore little resemblance to the one described in Montclair’s records, and hiding that difference required careful control over strength, circulation pressure, breathing response, and the amount of recovery he displayed after exertion.

The physician finished the final measurement and remained at the table comparing it with Joe’s earlier records. The instructor leaned over beside him rather than asking Joe to interpret their expressions.

”The spleen settled better than I expected.”

”So did the kidneys,” the physician replied. He turned back several pages. ”No persistent irregularity, no delayed recovery, and the resting measurements stayed inside the trend.”

”You’re comfortable calling the cycle complete?”

The physician checked one result again before answering. ”Medically, yes. I wouldn’t object to clearing him after the standard recovery period.” Only then did the instructor turn toward Joe.

”That means all five organs are stable. Your first complete tempering is finished.”

Joe remained seated on the edge of the examination table. ”And the time?” The physician checked the date at the front of the file.

”A little under a year.”

The instructor gave a quiet breath of approval. ”Fast enough that recruitment will want the report.”

Joe glanced between them. ”Is the speed the important part?”

”Not by itself,” the physician said. ”I can make someone progress quickly if I’m willing to spend the next six months repairing him. What matters is that your medical record stayed clean while you did it.”

The instructor nodded. ”Your pace gets attention. The fact that you reached the end without forcing us to stop the sequence every few weeks is what makes the pace worth reporting.” Montclair had watched a practitioner who had recently turned nineteen complete his first five-organ tempering in less than a year without serious cultivation injury or prolonged interruption. That was enough to justify continued investment without proving anything about how far he would ultimately advance.

The physician closed the file. ”You’ll take the normal recovery period before anyone clears you for another cycle. I don’t care how good you feel tomorrow.”

”I wasn’t planning to begin tomorrow.”

”Good. Keep that answer when you do feel good tomorrow.”

The instructor gave a faint smile at the familiar warning, then pointed toward the report. ”Recruitment may change your allowance after they review this. If they do, someone will contact you. Until then, nothing about the schedule changes.”

”Would additional instruction be part of that?”

”Possibly. More medicine, more training access, perhaps time with someone who has completed several cycles. Those decisions aren’t mine.”

Joe nodded. ”Then I’ll wait for the review.”

The physician had already reopened the file to add his final notes. ”And you’ll wait for medical clearance before the second tempering.”

”I will.”

”Then we’re finished.”

Publicly, Joe Vale had completed Internal Organ Tempering I. Privately, he had reached Great Completion after nine cycles. Montclair believed the first year had shown how quickly he could progress once proper resources, physicians, and instruction were placed around him. Joe had learned something different. He now knew how far his cultivation could diverge from the record maintained by people who were actively observing him, and he also knew that the margin would become harder to preserve with every additional advancement. For the moment, it remained manageable.

Back at Edwin’s house, six spirit stones remained locked away beside a growing stack of pharmaceutical notes. His experiments had finally produced something different from simple failure, but he was still far from knowing whether it could become useful.
