TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

Late spring arrived in Blackwood with rain that seemed determined to stay.

For several days at a time, clouds hung low enough to hide the upper slopes west of town. Water darkened the blackstone roads, filled the seams between paving stones, and ran in thin streams beneath cartwheels. In the poorer outer streets, where packed earth replaced stones, every wagon carved new grooves into the mud, and children learned to jump from doorway to doorway without touching the worst of it. Herb merchants covered their carts with waxed cloth, grain sellers cursed damp sacks, and the smell of wet wood followed people inside from the streets.

Joe liked the rain more now than when he first arrived in Blackwood.

At fourteen, weather had been one more inconvenience in an unfamiliar town. Now he knew which alleys flooded first, which market awnings leaked, which section of the western road became slick with moss, and which eating house kept its rear stove hot enough that wet boots dried before dinner ended. Familiarity changed place in small ways. Blackwood had once seemed too large to understand; now Joe could walk half the town without consciously choosing the route.

His Skin Tempering had changed in much the same way.

At first, progress had been obvious. The skin became harder to bruise, harder to scrape, more resistant to friction, more tolerant of blunt impact. Every new tempering created a change large enough that he could feel it in ordinary life. Training ropes stopped roughening his palms as quickly. Falls that once left marks faded into minor soreness. Even prolonged work around heat, smoke, rain, and cold became less irritating to the surface of his body.

Now the changes were becoming smaller.

That did not mean they were unimportant. It meant Joe had reached the point where impressions were no longer enough.

He noticed that while standing in Edwin’s warehouse one evening after the workers left.

The rear loading doors had been shut against the rain, but the building still smelled faintly of damp wood, dried herbs, burlap, and the mineral dust that settled beneath heavier shipments. Lantern light reflected off several brass scales near the accounting table. The reinforced freight frame stood in its usual place between stacked crates, exactly where Joe had used it for private strength tests before.

He looked at it for several seconds.

Then frowned.

Strength.

That had been the wrong question.

Joe walked over anyway.

The frame gave him a useful control precisely because it was wrong.

He loaded a familiar amount, wrapped his hands around the reinforced bar, settled his feet, and lifted.

The weight came up cleanly.

He increased it a little.

Then again.

The result was almost exactly what he expected from his general physical growth, Foundation work, and ordinary training. Better than months earlier, yes. Dramatically better because his Skin had undergone several additional temperings? No.

Joe lowered the frame and stood with both hands resting on the bar.

Of course not.

Skin did not generate force.

Muscle generated force. Bone carried force. Skin endured what reached the outside.

The mistake was so simple that Joe almost laughed at himself. He had become accustomed to turning physical progress into numbers, and the warehouse frame was convenient. Convenience had quietly become assumption.

He stepped away from the weights.

If I want to know what Skin Tempering is doing, I need to measure defense, not strength.

That thought stayed with him through dinner.

-------------

Joe had no intention of testing defensive improvement by repeatedly cutting himself.

That seemed like the sort of method an old martial manual might describe proudly while neglecting to mention how many disciples developed infections.

Pain was not measurement. Injury was not proof of dedication. If a test damaged the thing being tested badly enough to interfere with cultivation, then the test itself was poor.

He spent several days thinking about safer comparisons.

The guard already used padded striking implements during training. Edwin’s warehouse contained standardized merchant weights. Heavy cloth, rope, leather, wooden blocks, and measuring cord were easy to obtain without attracting attention. None of that looked suspicious. Plenty of guards tested toughness and conditioning.

Joe rented a private practice room near the western training district on an evening when rain had reduced street traffic to almost nothing.

The room was plain and familiar: packed-earth floor, thick wooden support posts, one narrow shuttered window, a wall rack for staff and padded training clubs, and the permanent smell of dust and old sweat that no amount of scrubbing seemed capable of removing. Water tapped against the roof while Joe arranged his equipment.

He did not need laboratory precision.

He needed consistency.

Same padded striking weight. Same short release distance. Same area of the arm. Same state of rest. Same amount of Blood Energy circulating before the test. Then a separate friction test using the same coarse hemp cloth under the same pressure, and finally recovery time from mild redness or bruising.

Nothing severe. Enough to compare.

Joe began conservatively.

The first padded impact struck the outer part of his upper arm with a dull thud. He examined the skin. Nothing visible.

The second produced faint redness.

The third made the area warm.

He stopped.

He waited, checked recovery, then repeated the test under the same conditions on another day.

The result stayed consistent.

The friction test told the same story. Coarse cloth dragged across the forearm under controlled pressure produced far less irritation than Joe remembered from the first completed stage of Skin Tempering. He did not need to rely only on childhood memory either; years of seeing other practitioners train had given him enough ordinary reference points to understand the scale.

The difference was substantial.

Not supernatural invulnerability.

Not armor.

Just better tissue.

Joe sat on the floor afterward, back against one of the wooden posts, listening to rain strike the roof.

So that’s the real curve.

Repeated Skin Tempering was not secretly making him stronger. It was improving the function Skin already had. Defense. Resistance to abrasion, impact, tearing, surface stress. Better tissue quality over the entire external layer.

The thought simplified years of messy observations at once.

He flexed his hand.

The palm remained soft enough to bend normally. The skin over the knuckles folded. The inside of the elbow remained flexible. His eyelids were still thin. Nothing had become unnaturally rigid.

Perfect Body seemed to be preserving function while allowing quality to rise.

That mattered more than Joe had appreciated when he was younger.

A crude version of repeated Skin Tempering might have produced thick, stiff tissue that defended well but moved badly. His body refused that sort of tradeoff. The palm did not become a plate. It became a better palm. The eyelid did not become leather. It simply became a little more resilient without losing the properties that made it useful.

----------

The next tempering passed slowly.

Joe had already reached the stage where every additional improvement demanded more effort for less obvious return. The first completed Skin layer had changed him enormously. The second repetition had been easy to notice. The third less so. By the later repetitions, progress showed itself in smaller ways: a patch of tissue near one wrist no longer lagged the other side, the skin over the shoulder handled repeated pressure more evenly, and the transition around the ankle stopped reddening earlier than surrounding areas under the same controlled stress.

Joe did not treat those locations as new powers.

They were simply weak points.

That distinction mattered.

A repeated realm should not become a collection of unrelated abilities simply because he had trained it many times. If Skin was defense, then later Skin Tempering should continue improving defense. The body was complex enough that the final weaknesses happened to appear in awkward places—hands, feet, neck, face, torso, back, joint folds, scalp—but they were all still part of the same defensive layer.

The later sessions therefore became less dramatic and more meticulous.

Joe would train, recover, then test a small set of comparable regions. If one area irritated more quickly than another, he adjusted future practice. If several regions behaved the same, he moved on rather than forcing unnecessary work.

He spent more time observing than tempering now, which felt strange after years when cultivation had meant constant doing. At eight, effort itself had been the scarce resource. He needed repetitions, discipline, time, and enough understanding to avoid obvious mistakes. Now One Effort Equals a Hundred has inverted the problem. The effort came easily. What mattered was choosing an effort worth multiplying.

If a session produced only exhaustion and no meaningful adaptation, it was bad training. If medicine cost twenty silver and gave almost nothing, it was a bad purchase. If an extra day of rest produced better growth than forcing another session, then resting was part of cultivation rather than an interruption to it.

That logic sounded obvious.

The martial world did not always behave as if it were.

------------

Edwin’s medicine operation expanded at the same time.

Late spring rain made the preparation room feel permanently damp despite the heat of the stoves. Workers opened and closed shutters throughout the day depending on the wind. Wet herb bundles arrived beneath waxed covers, and Mira became increasingly strict about inspecting them before storage because one shipment of poorly dried redleaf had nearly ruined an entire shelf the previous year.

Joe was standing near the rear table one afternoon when a worker opened a bundle and frowned.

“Too wet.”

Mira crossed the room immediately.

She pressed two fingers against the cut stem, smelled the bundle, then looked toward Edwin.

“North-road supplier again.”

Edwin sighed.

“Reject?”

Joe stepped closer.

“Not necessarily.”

Mira looked at him.

He pulled one stem apart.

The moisture level was higher than usual, but the herb itself remained good.

“Separate it.”

Edwin frowned. “Why?”

“Different drying schedule.”

“You want another process just for one supplier?”

“For one input condition.”

Mira understood first.

“The northern farms packed after rain.”

Joe nodded.

Edwin looked between them.

“So?”

“So, treating wetter material exactly like dry material means the inconsistency becomes ours,” Joe said. “The supplier gave us usable herbs. We are the ones pretending the input is identical.”

Edwin folded his arms.

“You have a talent for making other people’s problems become my responsibility.”

Joe smiled slightly. “That makes them solvable.”

Mira laughed. Edwin stared at Joe for a moment, then finally shook his head. “Fine. Separate the batch.”

They did.

The adjusted drying cycle worked.

Two days later the finished product showed no meaningful difference from the southern supply.

Joe found that more satisfying than he expected.

It was the same principle as Skin Tempering.

Do not demand that every input behave identically.

Understand what it is supposed to do, then improve the process around that function.

The thought amused him enough that he almost told Edwin.

Then decided against it.

Edwin already accused him of turning life into systems.

No need to provide additional evidence.
