TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

Simon’s team had stopped receiving warehouse duty entirely by late spring.

Nobody announced the change.

Their names simply moved farther down the western assignment board.

First came the timber roads. Then boundary inspection. Then patrols between the managed logging region and the older guard markers where roads narrowed, help took longer to arrive, and animals no longer scattered merely because men were approaching.

The newest assignment still remained within official guard territory.

That mattered.

Garrick was applying pressure, not handing Simon a death sentence.

Joe understood the distinction.

He also understood that the distance between the two could be shortened one assignment at a time.

Simon read the sheet twice.

Fourth Western Boundary — Marker Inspection, Timber-Camp Check, Two Missing Signal Flags.

Six guards would normally handle the circuit.

Their team had four.

Two forestry workers would accompany them.

Simon looked toward the officer who had posted it.

“Only four guards?”

“Low-risk circuit.”

Simon glanced at the seal.

Garrick Vane.

The officer noticed.

“Problem?”

Simon smiled.

“No.”

Joe approved.

His brother was learning.

----------

Mira found Simon before they left.

Joe was checking the medical satchel near the gate when she crossed the compound carrying a wrapped food bundle.

Simon immediately stood straighter.

Daren noticed.

Cole noticed.

Joe chose kindness and said nothing.

Mira handed Simon the bundle.

“For the road.”

Simon took it.

“You didn’t have to.”

“I know.”

Simon stared at her for slightly too long.

Then said, “We have guard rations.”

Cole turned away before his face betrayed him.

Mira looked at Simon.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

Simon finally seemed to realize something had gone wrong.

“I mean this is better.”

“Remarkable recovery,” Joe murmured.

Simon glared at him.

Mira smiled, touched Simon briefly on the sleeve and left.

Daren waited until she was out of hearing.

“Guard rations.”

Simon pointed at him.

“Not one word.”

Cole opened his mouth.

“Especially you.”

Joe picked up the medical satchel.

The forest, he decided, might be safer for Simon than romance.

-----------

The road narrowed after the third boundary.

Spring had filled the woods almost completely. Leaves layered overhead, breaking sunlight into shifting green fragments across the ground, while recent rain kept roots slick and turned shaded depressions into mud.

Joe enjoyed the terrain.

Not because it was comfortable.

Because it made mistakes obvious.

Dynamic Foundation had been approaching its limit for months.

Static Foundation Perfection ensured his body settled correctly whenever movement stopped. Dynamic Foundation dealt with everything between those moments.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

And the forest refused to provide clean transitions.

Roots.

Slopes.

Loose stones.

Branches.

Mud.

A worker stopping unexpectedly in front of him.

Cole slipping while pretending he had not slipped.

Every change demanded another redistribution of balance.

Joe had once thought good movement meant reaching the correct position quickly.

That understanding had changed.

Perfect movement meant never becoming structurally useless on the way there.

He crossed a wet root, shortened the next step because the ground dipped, shifted around one forestry worker and stepped onto a stone without breaking pace.

The movements required almost no conscious correction anymore.

Every Hard Work Pays Off had made years of valid movement accumulate instead of becoming meaningless repetition. One Effort Equals a Hundred accelerated the process after sixteen, but the foundation beneath it remained all the work Joe had already done.

Dynamic Foundation was close.

He could feel it.

-----------

They found the first missing signal flag less than an hour later.

The pole had been broken.

Not cut.

Broken.

One forestry worker crouched beside the mud.

“Tracks.”

Daren joined him.

Joe already saw them.

Hooves.

Enormous ones.

Simon frowned. “Greyhorn?”

The worker nodded.

“Probably a mature stag.”

Joe stopped.

Something old surfaced in memory.

A river beneath summer light.

Ben insisting the animal crossing it was a deer.

Another child saying it was too large.

Joe had seen only part of the creature through branches and water.

For years, the memory had remained filed beneath unknown.

He looked at the tracks.

“Could it cross a river?”

The forestry worker gave him a strange look.

“Of course.”

Joe smiled faintly.

Ben had been right.

Mostly.

------------

They found the stag near the second signal marker.

Joe saw the antlers first.

They moved between the trees at nearly the height of a man’s head before the body appeared beneath them.

The animal was enormous.

Not horse-sized exactly, but close enough that Joe understood why a child beside the river had struggled to call it a deer. Gray-brown hide covered a deep chest and long muscular legs, while the antlers spread outward in a heavy crown marked by old scratches.

Cole whispered, “That is ridiculous.”

Daren raised one hand.

Nobody advanced.

The animal watched them.

Joe studied it.

The broken marker suddenly made sense.

It had probably rubbed or struck the pole while moving through the area.

No monster.

No supernatural horror.

Just an animal large enough that ordinary assumptions about deer became dangerous.

One forestry worker whispered, “Back away.”

Simon nodded.

Correct decision.

The patrol did not exist to kill wildlife unnecessarily.

They began withdrawing.

Then Cole stepped on a branch.

The crack was small.

The stag reacted instantly.

Its head lowered.

“Move!” Simon shouted.

Everything happened at once.

The animal charged.

Daren pulled one worker aside.

Cole threw himself behind a tree.

Simon moved toward the second worker instead of away from the stag.

Stupid.

Predictable.

Joe moved too.

The stag crossed the distance with terrifying speed.

Simon shoved the worker clear.

The antlers missed him.

The shoulder did not.

Simon was thrown sideways and struck the ground hard.

Joe reached him almost at the same moment.

The stag continued several paces, turned and faced them again.

Simon tried to rise.

Failed.

“Stay down.”

“I’m—”

“Stay down.”

Something in Joe’s voice ended the argument.

The stag lowered its head again.

Joe watched its front legs.

Its weight.

The turn.

The uneven ground between them.

Part of his mind still observed automatically.

How quickly it accelerated.

How the shoulders transferred force.

How much weight those legs carried without collapse.

Then Joe looked once at Simon.

Blood at the corner of his mouth.

One arm held tight against his ribs.

Conscious.

Breathing.

Probably nothing immediately fatal.

The stag started forward again.

Joe stopped studying it.

The change inside him was surprisingly quiet.

The animal had become a problem.

Problems did not require anger.

They required solutions.

Daren shouted something.

Joe was already moving.

The stag charged.

Joe stepped toward it.

For one instant that looked insane.

Then the animal adjusted to where he had been.

Joe was no longer there.

His foot landed beside a root, weight transferred across the uneven ground, hips turned and the entire body arrived in the next position without a settling step.

No correction.

No wasted pause.

Static structure existed inside motion.

Dynamic Foundation clicked into place.

Joe did not think about the breakthrough.

He took the guard spear from the forestry worker as he passed and moved once more.

The encounter ended almost immediately.

One decisive strike.

The stag stumbled past him, crossed several more paces and collapsed among the wet leaves.

Silence returned to the forest.

Joe was already turning away.

----------

Simon was conscious.

That mattered more.

Joe knelt beside him.

“Breathe normally.”

“I am.”

“You are trying to sound impressive.”

Simon stopped talking.

Better.

Joe checked him carefully.

Heavy bruising.

Likely cracked ribs, perhaps one fracture.

Shoulder badly struck but still aligned.

No obvious internal emergency.

Perfect.

Not good.

Perfectly survivable.

Daren crouched beside them.

“That was fast.”

Joe did not look up.

“Adrenaline.”

The explanation was weak.

Not impossible.

Joe had publicly been cultivating Muscle for months. Everyone already considered him unusually talented.

Still, Daren had seen enough to remember.

Joe filed that problem for later.

Simon opened one eye.

“Did you kill it?”

“Yes.”

“You like studying animals.”

Joe tightened a wrap around his ribs.

“It hit you.”

Simon stared at him.

Joe continued working.

No explanation was necessary.

-------------

The return took nearly twice as long.

They built a rough litter for Simon because Joe refused to let him walk more than necessary.

Simon objected for the first half mile.

Then movement hurt enough that pride lost the argument.

Near Blackwood, Daren looked toward Joe.

“You moved strangely back there.”

Joe knew what he meant.

“So did the deer.”

Daren almost smiled.

“That was not an answer.”

“No.”

Daren let it go.

For now.

------------

That night, after Simon had been transferred from Joe’s care to the guard physician and Mira had arrived pale-faced enough that even Simon stopped joking for several minutes, Joe returned to his room.

He opened the panel.

Age: 17

Static Foundation — Lv5 — Perfection

Dynamic Foundation — Lv5 — Perfection

Joe stared at the second line.

He understood the breakthrough physically before the panel confirmed it.

Stillness and motion no longer felt like separate conditions.

Static Foundation gave him correct structure whenever the body settled.

Dynamic Foundation preserved useful structure while that body changed from one position into another.

No gap.

No wasted reset.

He looked lower, though the panel did not tell him everything he cared about.

The fifth Muscle tempering was nearly complete.

He could feel that without a number.

Joe dismissed the panel.

His thoughts returned instead to the forest.

He had been curious about the stag right until Simon hit the ground.

Then curiosity disappeared completely.

No anger.

No shouting.

No desire to punish an animal for behaving like an animal.

Only a rapid change in priority.

Joe found that worth remembering.

He liked understanding things.

Medicine.

Cultivation.

People.

Animals.

Systems.

But understanding was valuable only while there was time to understand.

Once something became an immediate threat to someone Joe intended to protect, study came second.

The conclusion felt colder than the boy Green Hollow had known.

Joe did not dislike it.

Outside, Blackwood’s western bell marked the late watch.

Tomorrow there will be questions about the patrol.

About the broken signal poles.

About why a four-man team had been assigned so far west.

And perhaps about how Joe had killed a mature greyhorn stag quickly enough that Daren was still thinking about it.

Those problems could wait until morning.

Tonight, Simon was alive.

That was enough.
