TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

Joe’s strength continued increasing.

Slowly.

That was the important part.

Two weeks after Muscle Great Completion, seven hundred and forty kilograms no longer produced the same warning through his wrists and knees.

He tested seven hundred and fifty.

Held it.

Lowered it.

Waited.

No pain.

No strange pressure afterward.

Joe stopped there.

His muscles could still produce considerably more.

His frame remained the limit.

But the limit itself was adjusting.

Perfect Body was integrating the completed muscular structure into the rest of him, improving coordination and distributing force through joints and bones more efficiently. It could not turn ordinary bone into tempered bone.

It could make ordinary bones use what it had more intelligently.

That explained the gradual increase.

Useful.

Temporary.

Joe did not intend to discover the exact point where temporary became broken.

Bone remained the answer.

So, he began collecting fragments.

------------

The first came from Theodere.

Not techniques.

Principles.

The distinction appeared in nearly every conversation they had.

”Bone cannot be treated like Muscle,” Theodere said.

They stood in one of the Hall’s smaller training rooms after evening lessons. An old wooden skeleton used for teaching posture leaned against the wall.

Joe nodded. ”Because damage accumulates differently.”

”That too.”

Theodere tapped his own forearm.

”Muscle recovers quickly. You overwork it, you usually know. Bones can tolerate stupidity longer.”

”Until it doesn’t.”

”Exactly.”

That matched medicine.

Repeated stress could strengthen structure within limits.

Beyond those limits, small damage accumulated before obvious failure.

Joe listened carefully.

Theodere was permitted to explain preparation, broad circulation principles and common errors. He was not permitted to teach the actual inherited sequence he had given Alex.

Joe did not push.

Every time Theodere reached the edge of what he could legally reveal, Joe changed the question.

Not:

Where does the method move next?

Instead:

”Why do most methods temper load-bearing bones before smaller structures?”

Or:

”Why do some practitioners fail at the joints?”

Those questions produced answers.

Partial ones.

Still useful.

By the fourth evening, Joe had learned something important.

Bone methods differed in route.

They did not differ randomly.

Certain principles appeared repeatedly.

Progress from structures accustomed to load toward more delicate regions.

Do not force circulation through a joint merely because neighboring bones tolerate it.

Allow time for the body to reorganize between major sections.

And most importantly—

Bone Tempering was not simply Blood Energy pushed into bone.

The surrounding tissues mattered.

Muscle.

Tendon.

Ligament.

Marrow circulation.

A bone existed inside a system.

Joe had suspected that already.

Suspicion was not knowledge.

Now it had independent support.

One fragment.

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

------------

The second came from Edwin.

Joe found it accidentally while reviewing older treatment records.

A patient from twelve years earlier had suffered chronic leg pain after attempting Bone Tempering under an incomplete roadside method.

Joe read the notes twice.

Then took them to Edwin.

”You treated this?”

Edwin glanced at the page.

”Unfortunately.”

”What happened?”

”Young caravan guard bought a copied manual.”

”Bad manual?”

”Not entirely.”

That interested Joe.

Edwin leaned back.

”The first sections were genuine. Probably copied from a real method. The rest had gaps.”

”And he filled them himself?”

”He followed what was written.”

”Which was worse.”

Edwin smiled.

”Yes.”

The guard had successfully tempered portions of both legs.

Then one route directed Blood Energy through an area without adequate preparation of the surrounding structure.

The result had not been spectacular.

No shattered bones.

No dramatic collapse.

Just pain.

Persistent weakness.

A slight change in gait.

Years of treatment afterward.

Joe studied the clinical notes.

”Did he lose the tempering he completed?”

”No.”

No Regression would have prevented that for Joe regardless, but the answer mattered.

The successful portions remained successful.

The damaged integration remained damaged.

Edwin watched him.

”You are thinking about Bone.”

”Obviously.”

”Do not reconstruct a cultivation method from medical failures.”

”I wasn’t planning to.”

Edwin looked unconvinced.

Joe added, ”I’m using failures to eliminate bad ideas.”

”That sentence did not improve my confidence.”

Joe smiled.

Second fragment.

-----------

The third came from the guard archive.

Not a manual.

Incident reports.

Joe discovered that Bone failures were recorded more often than successful advancement because failures interrupted service.

The reports were dry.

Extended medical leave.

Reduced field readiness.

Unable to maintain stance under impact.

Transferred to administrative duty.

Several included physician notes.

Others contained short statements from instructors.

Joe compared them.

Different methods.

Different practitioners.

Different decades.

Patterns appeared.

Rushing joint regions caused disproportionate trouble.

Attempting to temper large sections continuously produced more problems than dividing the process into stages.

Poor Muscle Completion made Bone advancement less stable.

Bad Foundations amplified everything.

That last part made Joe pause.

It appeared in report after report.

A practitioner could possess enough Blood Energy and still suffer because the structure beneath the method was wrong.

Joe’s Static and Dynamic Foundations were both at Perfection.

For the first time, he understood how enormous that advantage might become.

Foundations had never been merely beginner exercises.

They were the geometry through which every later layer had to work.

Third fragment.

-----------

The fourth came from Alex.

That one required patience.

Alex had changed after reaching Bone.

Not completely.

He still helped organize Mutual Help.

Still arranged rooms for new guards.

Still connected village recruits to cheaper suppliers.

But his confidence had thickened.

People waited when he spoke now.

Alex had noticed.

Joe approached him after one evening meeting.

”I want to watch your Bone training.”

Alex laughed.

”No.”

”Not the method.”

Alex stopped.

Joe continued.

”Normal conditioning. Striking. Load work. Anything not restricted.”

”Why?”

”Because you’re Bone.”

”You know other Bone practitioners.”

”They don’t like me enough to let me stare at them for an hour.”

Alex considered this.

”Fair.”

He agreed.

For the next week Joe watched three sessions.

Alex never exposed Blood Energy circulation.

He did not need to.

The physical differences told Joe plenty.

Impact traveled through him more cleanly.

Heavy resistance that would force a Muscle practitioner to brace in stages could be accepted through the whole frame.

But something else stood out.

Alex was still adapting.

His Bone breakthrough had occurred recently, and his body had not finished learning how to exploit it.

That resembled Joe’s post-Great-Completion integration.

Different layer.

Same broad principle.

Advancement changed capacity first.

Efficient use followed.

On the last day, Alex caught him looking at his stance.

”Figure it out?”

”Partly.”

Alex smiled.

”You think too much.”

”Usually.”

”You know, if you stayed closer to Mutual Help, I could probably speak to Theo again.”

Joe looked at him.

Alex continued casually.

”People are more willing to open doors for someone clearly committed to the group.”

There it was.

Not a demand.

Not quite.

An offer wrapped around an expectation.

Joe smiled.

”I’ll keep it in mind.”

Alex seemed satisfied.

Joe was not offended.

Information was useful even when it revealed the person giving it.

Fourth fragment.

-----------

The fifth came from someone who had failed.

His name was Oran Pell.

Retired guard.

Sixty-three.

Former Bone practitioner.

Joe found him through one of Edwin’s suppliers after asking about old martial injuries.

Oran ran a small rope-and-leather shop near the southern wall and walked with a slight stiffness on his left side.

”You want to know how I ruined my Bone road?”

He sounded amused.

Joe sat opposite him.

”Yes.”

”At least you’re direct.”

Oran had reached Bone in his thirties through a purchased method assembled from three copied manuscripts.

That sounded familiar enough to make Joe pay closer attention.

”The method worked,” Oran said.

”For a while?”

”Years.”

That was more interesting.

”Then what failed?”

”I thought because each part worked, all the parts belonged together.”

Joe became still.

Oran tapped his left hip.

”They didn’t.”

There.

That was the danger Joe had been looking for.

A collection of individually valid instructions could still form an invalid whole.

Fragments were not enough.

Consistency mattered between them.

Sequence mattered.

Assumptions mattered.

A method written for one preparatory system might become dangerous when attached to another.

Joe asked questions for almost two hours.

When he left, he paid Oran more than the man requested.

Fifth fragment.

And perhaps the most important.

----------

That same evening, Simon came home carrying the assignment sheet.

He did not joke.

Joe noticed immediately.

”What?”

Simon placed it on the table.

Western Fifth Line.

Two-Day Boundary Survey.

Overnight Timber Camp Seven.

Six guards.

Simon’s team plus two additions.

Joe read it again.

They had never been assigned that far west overnight.

”Still official territory,” Simon said.

”Yes.”

”Still maintained.”

”Mostly.”

Simon sat.

”Bret’s name isn’t on it.”

Joe looked at him.

”Why would it be?”

Simon gave him a flat stare.

”Optimism.”

Joe almost smiled.

The assignment was not suicidal.

It was the next step.

Exactly what Garrick had been doing all year.

Move them outward slowly enough that every individual assignment remained defensible.

Joe folded the sheet.

”When?”

”Three days.”

Enough time.

-----------

That night Joe laid everything out in his head.

Not on paper.

Never on paper.

Theodere’s principles.

Medical failures.

Guard reports.

Alex’s movement.

Oran’s warning.

His own anatomical knowledge.

Perfected Foundations.

Years of Blood Energy practice.

Past Life Memory let him compare every detail without distortion.

He rejected routes that depended on assumptions he could not verify.

Rejected sequences contradicted by anatomy.

Rejected anything that forced joint regions before surrounding structures were prepared.

Rejected steps that only appeared in one questionable source.

What remained was smaller.

Much smaller.

But coherent.

Joe spent the next two nights doing nothing more than tracing the proposed circulation without entering the bone layer.

Muscle.

Connective tissue.

Periosteal region.

Return.

Reset.

No tempering.

No forcing.

Again.

Every Hard Work Pays Off responded because the exercise was legitimate preparation.

Understanding accumulated.

One Effort Equals a Hundred magnified that learning brutally.

Joe adjusted one transition.

Then another.

On the third night, something settled.

Not in his bones.

In his understanding.

He opened the panel.

A new line had appeared.

Bone Tempering — Lv1

Joe stared at it.

No progress into Bone.

No Minor stage.

No miraculous advancement.

The panel had not invented anything.

It had simply recognized that what Joe had assembled now qualified as a coherent method.

That was enough.

Joe closed the panel.

Three days from now, Simon’s team would spend a night beyond the routes they usually walked.

And for the first time, Joe possessed a Bone method he trusted enough to begin testing.

He would not begin before the mission.

Starting a new realm immediately before entering deeper forest would be stupid.

Joe had spent too much time studying other people’s mistakes to create such an obvious one himself.

Bone could wait.

The forest would not.
