TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

At the Montclair annex, Internal Organ instruction began with an anatomical chart. Joe stood before it while his assigned instructor finished speaking with a physician near the far wall. The room occupied one corner of the annex clinic, with medicine cabinets lining one side and a padded examination table beneath the electric lamps. Morning light entered through the high windows, but the white lamps left few shadows around the training area. Five organs had been marked clearly on the chart before him: heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and spleen. The sequence was already familiar from the Montclair inheritance he had found in Greyspine. What interested Joe was seeing how people with generations of practical experience taught the same material.

The instructor joined him beside the chart.

”You’ve studied Internal Organ cultivation before?”

”The basic sequence.”

”How much?”

”I know the order and what counts as a complete tempering. I haven’t had anyone supervise me through it.”

That seemed to be the answer the man wanted.

”Good. Then I don’t need to teach you something you’ve already read. I only need to make sure we’re using the same terms.”

He indicated the chart.

”Heart first, followed by lungs, liver, kidneys, and spleen. Completing one organ means exactly that. One organ. The first Internal Organ tempering isn’t complete until all five have stabilized.”

Joe nodded. ”And the second begins again from the heart.”

”Correct.”

The distinction was simple, but the annex took it seriously. Progress records, medical examinations, recovery medicine, and later training decisions were all organized around which organ was being refined and which complete cycle the practitioner had reached. Joe looked toward another chart hanging beside the first. It contained old measurements and several columns of handwritten ranges.

”How long does the first cycle usually take?”

The instructor considered the question for a moment.

”That depends on who is attempting it. Someone can reach Bone Completion and still spend years there because his Foundation techniques haven’t caught up. You don’t have that problem.”

His eyes briefly moved to Joe’s assessment sheet. Static and Dynamic Foundation had both been verified at Perfection before the annex cleared him for Internal Organ cultivation. The instructor moved on without making anything of it.

”For someone young, properly prepared, and supported by decent medicine, completing all five organs within a year would be considered excellent.”

That was more useful to Joe than the reminder about Foundation. A first public cycle near that pace would attract attention without becoming difficult to explain.

”The later temperings take longer?”

”Usually. The first cycle changes organs that have never been tempered before. Once you repeat the process, you’re trying to draw further improvement from tissue that has already adapted. Recovery becomes more important with every cycle.”

He led Joe to the second chart. The recorded gains were averages rather than promises. During the first cycle, a successfully refined organ could add roughly five hundred kilograms to whole-body output once the change had fully integrated. The gains declined during later temperings, while the difficulty and recovery burden increased. Joe studied the numbers. Five organs made even the first complete cycle an enormous physical transformation. It explained the gulf between a developed Internal Organ practitioner and most people at Bone. Skin, Muscle, and Bone strengthened the structures that produced and transferred force, but the organs sustained the body using that force. Once those systems began changing as well, the entire body could operate at a different level.

The instructor pointed farther along the records.

”Don’t build your plans around the later figures. We have enough first- and second-cycle records for the averages to mean something. Fourth tempering is already uncommon. Beyond that, there aren’t enough comparable cases for me to trust a number.”

”Because fewer people attempt it?”

”Partly. Most have little reason to keep repeating the realm indefinitely, and every additional cycle becomes more expensive and more dangerous.”

He tapped the heart on the anatomical chart.

”The real difference is what happens when you make a mistake. A strained muscle is unpleasant. A cracked bone can put you in bed for months. Neither is something you should seek out, but the body gives you considerably more room to recover from them than it does from serious damage here.”

Joe understood. His experience with repeated Skin, Muscle, and Bone tempering had taught him how aggressively the body could sometimes be pushed. None of that justified approaching the organs with the same willingness to discover the limit by crossing it. The instructor continued, ”Pain tolerance is almost useless as a guide. If you’re waiting for severe pain before stopping, you’ve already gone farther than I want one of my trainees to go. The question is whether the organ is adapting successfully and whether that adaptation has stabilized before you ask for more.”

The physician called him over. Joe’s first supervised session began with measurements rather than cultivation. The physician checked his resting pulse, breathing, blood pressure, and recovery after controlled exertion before having him circulate Blood Energy through several familiar routes. Some of the instruments were recognizable from ordinary medical practice, while others had been built specifically for martial examinations. The purpose was clear enough. They wanted a detailed picture of Joe before Internal Organ cultivation began changing anything important. While reviewing the results, the physician stopped briefly at his Foundation assessment.

”Perfection in both at eighteen. When did you begin training Foundation?”

”Seven.”

The physician made another notation.

”That explains some of the control. Good blood-simulation herbs when you were young?”

Joe recognized the assumption immediately. Families with money did not always wait for a child to develop enough Blood Energy sensitivity naturally. Specialized medicines could reproduce enough of the relevant changes to make early Foundation practice more effective. They did not create mastery, but they gave a child years of additional feedback under proper instruction. Joe had never used them.

”Not through the Talent Hall.”

The physician interpreted the answer without difficulty.

”Private preparation, then.”

He returned to his notes. Joe let him. The exchange lasted only a few seconds, and the physician showed no interest in turning it into a discussion of Joe’s childhood. To him, early medicine was simply the most familiar explanation for an eighteen-year-old arriving with both Foundation methods already at Perfection. Only after the baseline examination did the instructor begin working through the Heart route. Most of the early practice involved circulation. Joe guided Blood Energy toward the deeper pathway, stopped when instructed, withdrew it cleanly, and began again. The room remained quiet except for the instructor’s occasional corrections and the faint movement of the physician preparing instruments nearby.

”Again, but ease the pressure before the final turn.”

Joe repeated the route. The instructor stopped him before the Blood Energy reached the deeper branch.

”You’re still carrying too much force. Bone work teaches people bad habits here. You don’t need to drive energy into an organ.”

Joe considered the correction before trying again. This time he reduced the pressure earlier and let the circulation settle into the route instead of forcing it forward.

”Better.”

The difference was immediately noticeable. The pathway had not changed, but the transition into it felt cleaner.

”Use the control you’ve already built,” the instructor said. ”If you have to wrestle the Blood Energy into place every time your posture changes, you aren’t ready for organ tempering.”

Joe repeated the sequence several more times. The instructor made smaller corrections to his breathing and the timing of one transition, but none needed to be explained twice. Eventually he glanced toward the physician.

”Let him cross the threshold once.”

The physician came closer.

”Once. Then I want another set of measurements.”

Joe began again. Blood Energy circulated through the familiar route and approached the Heart. At the final transition, he reduced the pressure as instructed and allowed a narrow thread to enter the first genuine refinement pathway. The instructor watched for several seconds.

”Enough. Withdraw.”

Joe obeyed immediately. The actual cultivation had lasted only moments, but once the effort became valid, One Effort Equals a Hundred multiplied the resulting adaptation far beyond what those few seconds should have produced. Joe kept his breathing steady while the physician returned to him.

”Any discomfort?”

”Pressure. Nothing sharp.”

”Where?”

Joe indicated the location. The physician checked his pulse, then repeated two of the earlier measurements.

”Stable.”

The instructor waited until he finished.

”How did the final section feel?”

”Much easier once I stopped forcing the circulation.”

”That’s what I wanted you to notice. Control matters more than force at this stage.”

He checked one of the measurements himself before returning the sheet to the physician.

”Whoever handled your early Foundation work did it properly.”

Joe offered no correction. The explanation they had chosen was convenient, and nothing about the session required him to replace it with a more complicated one. More importantly, the brief cultivation had shown Joe exactly what problem Montclair’s supervision created. He did not need to pretend that he learned slowly. His age, Foundation mastery, and previous performance already gave the annex every reason to expect good control. Deliberately repeating mistakes would only make his cultivation history less believable. The problem was volume. An ordinary practitioner might need many valid refinement attempts to produce a substantial change; Joe could not copy that schedule without advancing far too quickly.

His public progress therefore had to be controlled by limiting how often he performed genuine tempering rather than by pretending to be incompetent. He could practice circulation as often as necessary. He could accept corrections quickly and allow the instructors to see that he understood the method. What he could not do was turn every practice session into productive cultivation. The instructor scheduled the next supervised session before releasing him.

”You picked up the route quickly today. That’s useful, but don’t confuse understanding a technique with being ready to repeat it.”

”I won’t.”

”Good. The physician will decide when we increase the load.”

Joe collected his things and left the clinic.

By the time he returned to Edwin’s house, the morning had clarified more than the basic Heart route. Montclair expected him to be talented. That gave him room to display good control. What they did not expect was the effect a small amount of valid cultivation had on him. Joe did not begin serious private refinement immediately. Instead, he reviewed every correction from the annex and spent the rest of the day circulating Blood Energy only to the edge of the Heart pathway. There was little reason to rush into the first private attempt when he had just gained access to people who had supervised the same realm hundreds of times.

The following day, he locked the guest-room door, placed the Greyspine inheritance beside him, and began. Without an instructor telling him to withdraw after a few moments, Joe allowed the circulation to continue into a meaningful Heart-refinement session. The same multiplication appeared immediately: enormous improvement from very little active work, accompanied by equally real strain. Joe ended the session rather than beginning again. He remained seated beside the bed while his pulse settled, paying closer attention to the Heart than to the satisfaction of having progressed.

Perfect Health was already repairing the minor damage while Perfect Body helped the surrounding structures settle around the change, but neither made the Heart ready for another attempt. Productive work had become brief; recovery had not. Joe could probably force another refinement before the first had fully integrated. His body was strong enough to tolerate more, and Perfect Health would repair much of the resulting strain. That did not make the effort worthwhile.

Internal Organ cultivation was not simply about surviving damage. The organs had to adapt successfully while continuing to perform their normal functions. Repeatedly interrupting that adaptation because he could heal afterward would turn an enormous advantage into an unnecessary risk. Joe waited.

The next morning, the Heart no longer felt injured. When he tested the route without beginning another refinement, however, the deeper response had not completely stabilized. That distinction changed his understanding of the realm. For years, more correct work had usually been the answer to slow advancement. Internal Organs imposed a different limit: One Effort Equals a Hundred could multiply valid cultivation, but not the days of biological adaptation that had to follow it.

Perfect Health shortened recovery enormously, yet healing and integration were not the same thing. Medicine, nutrition, and rest could shorten or support the process; none made time irrelevant. Joe adjusted his schedule accordingly.

At the annex, his public training continued normally. His circulation improved rapidly, corrections rarely needed to be repeated, and the small amount of Heart refinement he performed under supervision progressed quickly enough to please the instructor without approaching anything impossible. Nobody found his control particularly mysterious. The annex regularly dealt with young martial artists whose families had begun preparing them years before they reached Bone Completion. Joe’s Foundation results and apparent early preparation already gave the staff an explanation they understood.

Privately, he cultivated only when the previous change had fully settled. Sometimes the Heart was ready sooner than he expected. At other times the discomfort had vanished while deeper signs of adaptation remained, and Joe waited another day. He also began arranging his private sessions around medical appointments. There was no reason to arrive at the annex carrying unexplained fresh strain from cultivation the physician believed he had never performed. Those examinations gradually taught Joe what the annex could actually detect. The physicians were good. They could identify abnormal stress, poor recovery, circulation problems, and damage within the organ Joe was publicly refining. Their instruments were substantially better than anything available in Blackwood.

They still could not determine an organ’s entire cultivation history from a pulse and a few measurements. As long as Joe controlled his physical output, avoided obvious fresh strain, and did not circulate Blood Energy through hidden refinement routes in front of them, the examinations revealed his current condition far more readily than the exact amount of cultivation that had produced it. That gave him room to conceal progress. It did not give him unlimited room. Enough hidden advancement would eventually alter his strength, endurance, circulation, and long-term medical measurements. The larger the difference became, the harder it would be to explain why his body behaved like that of a more advanced practitioner.

Joe kept the problem in mind without trying to solve it before it existed. For now, the gap remained manageable. The recovery periods also left him with more free time than he had expected. The Montclair annex maintained a technical library for martial practitioners, physicians, and support staff. Joe had no access to the family’s important private inheritances, but those were not the shelves that interested him. He spent one of his first recovery afternoons in the medical section. The library was quiet at that hour. Tall shelves divided the room into narrow aisles, and several long tables stood beneath electric lamps near the windows. A physician occupied one of them with a stack of case records, while two younger practitioners worked through anatomy texts farther away.

Joe began among books on pharmaceutical processing. The collection was considerably broader than Edwin’s. There were texts on food concentration, extraction, preservation, filtration, martial physiology, and the handling of medicinal materials containing spiritual energy. Much of the basic chemistry was familiar. Heat could preserve one compound while destroying another. Alcohol extracted substances that ordinary boiling left behind. Pressure and repeated filtration could concentrate useful components far beyond what smaller workshops in Blackwood regularly produced. The books concerning spiritual materials were less complete. Whenever qi became necessary to a process, explanations often ended precisely where Joe wanted them to continue. That was unsurprising. The annex served martial practitioners and medical staff, not immortal cultivators.

Several volumes still discussed damaged spiritual herbs. Plants could lose spiritual potency because of poor harvesting, improper storage, or long transport while retaining enough ordinary medicinal value to remain worth processing. Mortal pharmacists had developed methods for recovering whatever useful material survived. One passage held Joe’s attention. The author described how to salvage ordinary medicinal compounds after the higher spiritual structure had already begun to deteriorate. Joe read the section again. The writer wanted to minimize the loss. Joe became interested in what the loss itself produced. The six spirit stones hidden among his belongings contained energy his body could perceive but could not safely absorb. Direct exposure had already established that much.

Medicine, however, changed substances constantly. It separated components, concentrated some, diluted others, and deliberately destroyed unwanted structures. If the problem was not simply the presence of spiritual energy but the form in which that energy existed, degradation might change the result. Perhaps everything useful would dissipate. Perhaps something would remain. Joe did not know enough to sacrifice one of the six stones to answer the question. Instead, he began copying notes on extraction, degradation, filtration, and the treatment of damaged spiritual materials. There was nothing suspicious about the pages. A young man who had studied medicine for years had found access to a better pharmaceutical library and was taking advantage of it.

Only the reason certain passages interested him remained private.

The following weeks developed into a stable routine. Joe trained publicly at the annex, attended every scheduled medical examination, used the nutritional allocation Montclair provided, and purchased additional concentrated food when the standard amount proved insufficient. His Heart progressed steadily on the official record.

Privately, it stabilized far sooner. Joe did not move to the next organ the moment he could tolerate more cultivation. He waited until he was satisfied that the Heart’s changes had fully integrated before beginning the lungs. The difference between them appeared almost immediately. Lung refinement interacted with breathing in ways Heart refinement had not. The timing of inhalation and exhalation affected the circulation route, and the pattern of fatigue after a session was different enough that Joe abandoned the schedule he had originally imagined. The liver required another adjustment. The kidneys demanded greater caution again.

By the time Joe reached the spleen, he no longer thought of the five organs as identical tasks arranged in a sequence. The same principles governed all of them, but each organ responded differently enough that treating them mechanically would have been careless. That alone justified the time he had spent learning the realm before attempting to accelerate it.

Several weeks after his first genuine Heart refinement, Joe completed the spleen. He ended the session there and allowed the final change to settle. There was no dramatic breakthrough. Nothing in Edwin’s house shook, and no burst of Blood Energy escaped the room. Five strengthened internal systems simply finished settling into the body he had already spent years developing. The difference became clearer after recovery. The old Montclair records suggested that the first complete Internal Organ cycle could add roughly five hundred kilograms of whole-body martial output for every successfully refined organ.

Joe’s result was close enough to validate the estimate. Across the five organs, the increase approached twenty-five hundred kilograms. The number was impressive. The way the strength now felt interested him more. His Skin, Muscle, and Bone no longer seemed like increasingly powerful structures supported by ordinary internal machinery. The systems beneath them had begun catching up with the body they were expected to sustain. Internal Organ Tempering I was complete. At the Montclair annex, Joe’s official record still showed him progressing through the Heart. The size of that difference concerned him more than it excited him.

His physicians had noticed nothing because Joe controlled what strength he displayed, timed private cultivation around examinations, and circulated only through routes appropriate to his public stage while under observation. The same methods would not remain sufficient forever. A second complete cycle would deepen every change the first had made. Later refinements would push his physical performance and internal condition even farther from the stage recorded in Montclair’s files. Eventually, concealment would require another solution. Joe had no reason to solve that problem before reaching it. For now, he opened the Greyspine inheritance to the second Internal Organ tempering.

The same five organs waited for him, beginning with the Heart. The sequence had not changed. His body had, and the warnings in the inheritance became noticeably stricter now that the organs were no longer ordinary. Joe read the section carefully before closing the manual. The first cycle had answered the questions that mattered. His talents worked in the realm, recovery remained a genuine constraint, and Montclair’s assumptions about his early preparation explained the quality of his control. The private road ahead could move far faster than anyone around him expected, provided he remained disciplined enough not to rush it.

Beside the inheritance lay the pharmaceutical notes he had begun collecting from the annex library. Internal Organ Tempering II would wait until the first cycle had completely settled. Until then, Joe had other work to do.
