Facing an Ancient God for a Year

Chapter 2280: Chapter 2275: Unbearable Wheel

”The Sun, or what is called the Unbearable Wheel, has been an indispensable symbol since humans became conscious, and naturally, it was no exception before the Long Night.”

Shangjing, afternoon, a small shop by the street.

Chief Yuan Shan of the Night Watchman, occupying a seat of a private proprietor, examined the flares streaming through the window from this perspective.

Though not impassioned, her voice at this moment was unprecedentedly solemn, solemnly recounting the secrets of history.

The Unbearable Wheel? That’s indeed quite an apt description,

For this, Fu Qian naturally listened quietly, nodding slightly.

Even due to the phrasing, for a moment, he couldn’t help but recall an item he possessed called the ”Pseudo-Divine Being,” which had a note upon acquisition—Divine Beings are not the only ones who can perceive Divine Beings.

”Then the name you asked me about seems tightly bound to this concept.

”Eckhart... Pure Gold, Ancient Man, even his appellations are not just one. It’s said that at the end of the Mythic Era, he was a highly reputable Sun Apostle and extremely devout.”

Facts proved Chief Yuan was reliable when she got serious, even remembering the epithet clearly, as she quickly recited several appellations.

Ancient Man...

Among them, Fu Qian remembered one more clearly.

In that mission in Paradise, the warehouse directly referred to the target this way.

This one word alone powerfully confirmed the accuracy of Chief Yuan’s intelligence.

”Thank you, the efficiency was much higher than I expected.”

However, Fu Qian did not immediately bring it up but first praised this capability.

Perhaps the wording sounded a bit sardonic at first glance, but having wrought havoc in Shangjing together for so long, Fu Qian believed Chief Yuan would not misunderstand so easily.

...

”Higher than I expected.”

Indeed, it proved Chief Yuan’s composure was also tried and tested; she merely sighed deeply at the impermanence of life, with no intention to claim credit.

”I initially thought it would take the teacher some time to reply.”

And indeed, the strange phrasing was not just Fu Qian overthinking it.

It seemed Chief Yuan had once again mentioned Teacher Henry.

”Ashamed, I disturbed the old master in his retreat again. How’s he doing now?”

With a deep sigh, Fu Qian couldn’t help but recall the last time he saw the retired Night Watchman during the Second Phase.

”He has already started going to church, no need to worry.”

Yuan Shan obviously remembered the same, as her teacher and the person opposite her had once met amid a chaotic scene, only to end up with some magical recollections.

”The teacher actually inquired about your situation a few times since then, but I didn’t tell him much...

”Including this instance, I merely said that due to the recent series of incidents, I was looking into some ancient tales and happened upon a name.”

And in the next moment, she even emphasized that even to her teacher, the confidentiality level was adhered to this time.

”Thanks for the courtesy, I’ll visit again when I have time.”

Fu Qian nodded, recalling the experience in the Night Holy City last time—though he didn’t excessively beat the old master, Old Master Henry’s condition was somewhat serious in the end.

Given his character, he probably wouldn’t hold a grudge over it, but a little curiosity is only human.

Let’s not forget, at the first meeting in any real sense, that old master was curious about Fu Qian’s business plans and whether he could drive.

...

”There’s really no need to forcedly...”

Unfortunately, even if Fu Qian spoke politely, Yuan Shan’s brow visibly furrowed.

Maybe there had been friction, but she wasn’t worried about the two fighting upon meeting.

Quite the opposite, considering they both had somewhat unreliable minds, the prospect of meeting without fighting seemed even more troubling.

”In short, the teacher responded to my information above quite quickly, and particularly emphasized that the ’Sun’ of the Mythic Era had indeed long fallen, so Eckhart sacrificing himself for faith was actually not that foolish compared to that.”

Clearly unwilling to delve further into that notion, Yuan Shan forcefully steered the topic back with a steadfast posture, quickly briefing the intelligence gathering process.

”So what would be a more foolish act? Sacrificing oneself only to find the worshipped hasn’t died?”

And a certain saying she repeated clearly piqued Fu Qian’s interest.

”Yes, before death, God and men are far from equal. They can be mad, can slumber, but they often don’t entirely vanish.”

Yuan Shan’s response was quite straightforward.

”But the Unbearable Wheel fell extremely thoroughly, with no risk of revival?”

The Sun, as a symbol of the Superior Being, regardless of the specific reverence, is indeed a classic concept.

Even during the Nightmare Corridor venture, encountering the most beautifully spirited prisoner ”Inner Diplomat,” one of their lines left a deep impression on Fu Qian—the moon is not just the moon; ignorance is real ignorance.

Aside from the philosophical reflection, the meaning represented by the disappearance of ”Sun” and ”Moon” in the Long Night indeed stirred deeper thoughts in Fu Qian.

Theoretically, the sun and moon are just two stars, but due to the limitation of human perspective, they were elevated to an exaggerated status.

So why does the Long Night keep the Stars Association flashing, yet missing those two still symbolizes Doomsday?

Simple, the ”Moon” has long exceeded the concept of a lunar body.

Consider the Witch’s crafted darkness lacking light.

At that time, the on-site evaluation was a direct manifestation of the Dark Side of the cosmos, beyond the unknowable horizon.

And such an attack, the Witch nonchalantly conjured three times, deterring a certain Superior Being from going berserk again.

From this perspective, the name ”Sun” behind what it represents seems to far exceed a mere ball of light and heat.

”Absolutely not, the teacher said he is very certain of this, and even for the Council’s upper echelon, this is an undisputed opinion.”

Yuan Shan nodded firmly.

”Eckhart’s greatest fortune also lies in this, being among the most devout in the Sect. He chose to end himself because he received no response... and the Superior Being he worshiped also did not ignore him, but simply could not.”

This latter sentiment, Fu Qian felt, seemed to echo someone’s tone, again sensing the old master’s firm view on this.

”What, do you think there might still be doubt?”

However, Yuan Shan took this silence as dissent, couldn’t help but ask.

No, in fact, I am equally firm in this—because the Lord of Heaven is no more.

To this, Fu Qian thought silently, but indeed he raised the question.

”But at the time, Ariel, we seemed to have witnessed the Sun descending upon him?”
