Facing an Ancient God for a Year

Chapter 672: Chapter 670: Laxik’s Endless Nightmare_1 Chapter 672: Chapter 670: Laxik’s Endless Nightmare_1 “Morning, Laxik, you’re looking much better—are you having fun these past couple of days?”

Even though the morning had just begun, the air was already hinting at scorching heat. Mrs. Mary held her hand above her forehead to shade her eyes as she watched the convertible slowly halt by the roadside.

“Quite nice! I’ve relaxed completely.”

The well-maintained car with a woman sporting thick, brown hair inside, adjusted her wide-brimmed hat and greeted Mrs. Mary.

This woman, who looked no more than about thirty, had an appearance that could be described as mature and attractive. However, at that moment, she appeared languid and was without makeup, giving off the vibe of someone on vacation.

“The only problem is, after relaxing, I seem to have lost interest in the plans I made before.”

“At least you achieved what you came here for, didn’t you?”

Mrs. Mary seemed very understanding and said with a smile.

“Would you like to come in for a glass of iced lemonade?”

Uh—

Laxik tilted her head, pondering for a while, and then happily agreed.

The next moment, she got out of the car and walked into Mrs. Mary’s yard, casually greeting Jones, who was about to climb into the car.

“Chief Jones, aren’t you a bit late at this hour?”

“I’m older, so for me, this is the standard time.”

Jones said with quite a bit of self-righteousness, greeted briefly, and drove off.

It was obvious that Mrs. Mary had come out to send her husband to work, and during their conversation, Jones had patiently stood there, seemingly waiting especially to greet Laxik as she entered.

“Did you have breakfast yet?”

Watching Chief Jones’s car disappear into the distance, Mrs. Mary led Laxik into the house while asking warmly.

“No.”

Laxik also didn’t hold back, hanging up her hat with a smile.

“Then it seems this place really is your lucky spot, I happen to have an extra breakfast today.”

Mrs. Mary had an I-knew-it tone as she quickly brought over a plate and set it on the table.

“You made an extra one?”

Leaning down to smell the fried eggs in front of her, Laxik’s eyebrows imperceptibly furrowed.

“If you’d told me in advance.”

Mrs. Mary chuckled.

“Jones’s appetite was poor today, this is his portion.”

“I really couldn’t tell.”

Upon hearing Mrs. Mary say that, Laxik seemed reassured, naturally taking the cutlery she handed over.

“Jones doesn’t look like the kind of man who’d lose his appetite over anything.”

“It is indeed rare for him.”

Mrs. Mary sighed softly, and then with a slight hesitation as if remembering something, her expression wavered.

“Speaking of which, you should be a bit more cautious lately, don’t go to overly secluded places alone.”

Oh?

Laxik, who was in the process of putting fried eggs into her mouth, looked up at her upon hearing this.

“Did something happen?”

“Strictly speaking, I shouldn’t be telling you this, but it doesn’t seem like you’d have anywhere to leak information.”

Mrs. Mary smiled and continued her busywork.

“Yes, a resident of the town has gone missing.”

“Ah! When?”

Laxik appeared somewhat incredulous, her surprised tone plainly humoring Mrs. Mary.

“The night you arrived here.”

“That was two days ago… and not a word I’ve heard?”

Laxik finally took on a more serious demeanor.

“That’s because not long after, the victim’s family member also disappeared.”

Mrs. Mary shook her head with a sigh.

“Less than a day after Mrs. Harold went missing, her husband also vanished without a trace.”

“That does sound strange.”

“But just two disappearances aren’t enough to put off a police chief from his food, are they?”

Laxik’s mind was exceptionally keen.

“That’s because…”

Mrs. Mary pondered, lowering her voice.

“They found Mrs. Harrold, just last night.”

“…Shouldn’t that be good news?”

“She’s already dead.”

“Well.”

Laxik seemed at a loss for words for a moment, focusing on stuffing the fried eggs into her mouth.

“So her husband is now the prime suspect?”

“I understand you’re not feeling too well-disposed toward men right now.”

Mrs. Mary’s smile was somewhat helpless.

“Even if Harold’s suspicion is very strong, you shouldn’t ignore it.”

“Hm?”

“The scene of Mrs. Harold’s death was extremely brutal.”

“Brutal?”

Laxik frowned as she inquired, her expression suggesting that emphasizing this point wasn’t necessary since the person was already dead.

“…They say it was comparable to a slaughterhouse, not only was the person’s belly sliced open, but the body was also arranged in a bizarre pose.”

Mrs. Mary’s tone sounded as if she was trying to frighten a child.

“It’s hard to imagine what kind of hatred would drive someone to do such a thing.”

“Isn’t that a bit exaggerated? Did you see it with your own eyes?”

“Chief Jones told me himself,”

Mrs. Mary sighed.

“He never tells me these things, but this time, he mentioned it to me twice.”

“It’s apparent that even he needed someone to help shoulder the memory.”

“Really now … But regardless, it should have nothing to do with me, an outsider, right?”

“Why take everything for granted like that!”

When Laxik said that, Mrs. Mary felt a surge of indignation for a moment.

“One of my nephews is the same, telling him it’s safer here, and he wouldn’t listen, insistent on living in the mountains with his classmates.”

“Do you realize, the corpse was said to have had its head cracked open, the inside scooped out to emptiness, as if the killer was looking for something?”

“Is that so? Could it be—”

Laxik finally looked serious, stopping mid-sentence to glance at the wall clock overhead.

“The killer was indeed looking for something?”

“What do you mean?”

As she brought the hot corn porridge to Laxik, Mrs. Mary didn’t quite grasp what she meant.

However, the next moment, accompanied by a whooshing sound, a heavy ashtray struck her temple, and she collapsed to the ground without a murmur.

Ha ha … hahaha!

After gently placing down the ashtray, Laxik looked at the drop of blood that had spattered into the corn porridge and unexpectedly let out a laugh.

The next moment, she picked up the scalding bowl as if she couldn’t feel the heat, and downed its contents in one gulp.

Gently placing the bowl down, she looked at Mrs. Mary on the ground and finally spoke in a hoarse voice.

“Sorry …”

…

“Why? Why don’t you have it either!”

Shortly after, in the living room akin to a battlefield, Laxik faced the bloody carnage, looking as if driven to madness.

“Impossible! You are the last of that family in this town! The key must be with you!”

“I have searched everywhere, eliminated all suspicious items, so there must be something wrong with the person, it has to be related to lineage! I can’t be wrong!”

“So how could there possibly be nothing inside your body—”

Tearing frantically at the split-open skull, after a long while, Laxik turned to the wall clock, covering her face in agony.

“I’m sorry—”
