50 Chapter 50: The Beginning 2026-10-14

Kai stared at the note lying at his feet.

For a long moment, everything else faded into the background.

The police outside.

The intercom.

The hidden phone beneath the hallway table.

Even the livestream with more than a hundred and fifty thousand people watching his every breath.

None of it seemed real anymore.

The folded piece of paper rested on the hardwood floor only a few feet away, as harmless as a grocery receipt that had slipped out of someone’s pocket.

It shouldn’t have been there.

Nothing should have been able to come through that wall.

His flashlight trembled as he slowly crouched, never taking his eyes off the narrow gap that had opened behind the bookshelf.

Nothing emerged.

No hand.

No face.

No movement.

Only darkness.

The apartment intercom crackled again.

”Mr. Mercer?”

The officers sounded more urgent now.

”We need you to respond.”

Kai swallowed. His throat felt painfully dry.

”I’m... I’m here.”

Relief slipped into the officer’s voice.

”Good. Can you unlock the door for us?”

Kai opened his mouth.

Then closed it again.

His gaze drifted back to the note.

Don’t let them in.

The handwriting was unnervingly neat.

Every letter perfectly spaced.

It looked less like a warning scribbled in desperation and more like someone had carefully taken their time, making sure he could read every word.

”Luna.”

”I’m here.”

”What do I do?”

The question escaped before he could stop it.

It was the first time all night he’d asked for help without hiding behind sarcasm.

For a second, only the soft hiss of static filled the silence.

Then Luna spoke.

”Do you trust the officers outside?”

Kai frowned.

”I...”

His thoughts raced.

The badge numbers.

The color of the door.

The scrape near the bottom corner.

”They know things they shouldn’t.”

”So does whoever wrote that note.”

His stomach tightened.

She was right.

Everyone tonight seemed to know things they shouldn’t.

His apartment.

His schedule.

His private conversations.

The building’s layout.

Even details he’d never shared with anyone.

It was as if every secret in his life had quietly stopped being secret.

A chill crawled beneath his skin.

The chat continued racing by too quickly to follow, but a few messages managed to catch his eye.

SleepyCoffeeBean:

THIS IS A TRUST EXERCISE FROM HELL

GrandmaWithWiFi:

PLEASE OPEN THE DOOR FOR THE POLICE

CorporateGremlin:

WHY IS THERE A SECRET WALL??

ToasterEnjoyer:

I CAME FOR A GAMING STREAM

Despite everything, the last message almost made him laugh.

Almost.

Instead, he reached down and carefully picked up the note.

It felt ordinary.

Cheap printer paper.

Folded twice with clean, precise creases.

Nothing about it felt supernatural.

That somehow made it worse.

He unfolded it slowly.

The back was blank.

Inside...

Only one sentence had been written.

If they enter before you find it, everyone loses.

Kai read it once.

Then again.

A third time.

The words didn’t change.

”...What?”

His voice was barely audible.

”Luna.”

”Mhm?”

”It says I have to find something.”

She was quiet for a moment.

”What?”

”It doesn’t say.”

His eyes drifted back toward the opening behind the bookshelf.

A thin strip of darkness waited there.

Silent.

Patient.

Something was hidden inside.

He could feel it.

And that certainty terrified him.

Because curiosity had been weaponized against him all night.

Every impossible message.

Every mysterious photograph.

Every strange sound.

Every single one had dragged his attention exactly where someone wanted it.

How was this any different?

His phone buzzed.

Another unknown number.

It’s lying.

Before he could even lock the screen, another message arrived.

The note is real.

A third appeared almost instantly.

The police aren’t here for you.

Kai squeezed his eyes shut.

His temples throbbed.

”I think I’m getting a migraine.”

”You’ve earned one.”

”...Thanks?”

”It wasn’t a compliment.”

A weak smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Even now, Luna somehow knew exactly when to interrupt the spiral forming inside his head.

She wasn’t trying to cheer him up.

She was keeping him grounded.

The distinction mattered.

The intercom crackled once more.

”Mr. Mercer.”

Officer Hernandez’s voice was firmer now.

”If you can hear me, we need you to unlock the door immediately.”

Kai looked toward the entrance.

Then back at the bookshelf.

Then toward the hidden phone still lying beneath the hallway table.

His apartment had become a maze of impossible choices.

Trust the police.

Trust the note.

Trust Luna.

Trust himself.

Every option felt manipulated.

Every path seemed to have been chosen for him long before tonight.

He hated not knowing which fear belonged to reality.

A sudden metallic bang echoed somewhere deeper inside the building.

Loud enough to make him flinch.

The officers reacted instantly.

Their voices became muffled through the apartment door.

”Stairwell!”

”Go! Go!”

Heavy footsteps thundered away down the hallway.

Fast.

Purposeful.

Someone shouted in the distance.

Another voice answered.

Then...

Silence.

Kai frowned.

”...They left?”

”I heard it too.”

For the first time in several minutes, Luna sounded genuinely uncertain.

The intercom remained open.

Static hissed softly through the speaker.

No voices.

No footsteps.

No explanation.

His apartment suddenly felt isolated again.

Then...

The bookshelf moved.

Not violently.

Not enough to topple over.

Just another inch.

A slow, deliberate push from the other side.

Dust drifted lazily through the flashlight beam.

The gap widened.

Kai’s heartbeat quickened.

He took one cautious step forward.

Just enough to peer inside.

There wasn’t another room.

There wasn’t a hidden hallway.

Only a narrow maintenance shaft running between the apartments.

Concrete walls disappeared into darkness.

Electrical cables stretched overhead in bundled lines.

Old copper water pipes ran vertically through the cramped space, disappearing into the ceiling.

It smelled of dust.

Rust.

And stale air that hadn’t been disturbed in years.

Then his flashlight settled on something resting across one of the pipes.

A small white envelope.

Perfectly clean.

As though someone had placed it there only moments ago.

His name was written across the front.

Not simply Kai.

Not Mercer.

His full name.

Written in careful handwriting he’d never seen before.

He stared at it, unable to move.

Behind him, his computer speakers crackled.

The sound cut through the apartment like a knife.

Kai spun around.

His stream hadn’t ended.

The monitors were still on.

The chat was still racing by.

But the audio...

Had muted itself.

Every alert.

Every donation.

Every message.

Gone.

Only the faint buzz of his speakers remained.

Then a calm, unfamiliar voice echoed through every speaker in the apartment.

Not through Discord.

Not from the abandoned phone.

Not from the television.

From his streaming PC.

Clear.

Steady.

Almost conversational.

”Hello, Kai.”

The voice paused.

Then, without hesitation...

It spoke Luna’s real name.
