Chapter 1020: Chapter 1019: Advance by Retreat! (5 updates)

In the blink of an eye, three days had passed since their return from the Sub-Thunder Element Dimension Realm, and Zhu Qingshuang and Zhu Tian should have already been released from the Xuanmen Inspection Team.

Coincidentally, Zhao Bingqian had to deal with company matters today, Chen Yushan was on field duty, so Ye Haochuan made his way early to the Inspection Group to pick up Zhu Qingshuang and Zhu Tian.

After their trip to the Sub-Thunder Element Dimension Realm, the relationship between Ye Haochuan and Zhu Qingshuang was nearly solidified, just on the precipice of taking that final step. Ye Haochuan, heading to see Zhu Qingshuang this time, felt a surge of excitement.

”What terrible luck! Risking my life to save those two fools, only to be falsely accused and locked up for days for nothing!” Zhu Qingshuang grumbled persistently as soon as she walked out the door.

”Junior Sister Zhu, don’t take it too hard. Big families care about saving face; it’s normal for them not to want blemishes on the reputations of their geniuses as they grow. Fortunately, they still have a bit of conscience—they only locked us up for a few days!” Zhu Tian explained.

”What else could they have done? Silence us permanently?” Zhu Qingshuang retorted unkindly.

Zhu Tian didn’t reply, but his expression made it clear that such a possibility hadn’t been entirely off the table.

Damn, were these two locked up together and ended up bonding?

Ye Haochuan’s face darkened abruptly, and he quickly stepped forward to greet them.

Though Zhu Qingshuang had already learned from Chen Yushan that Ye Haochuan had safely returned, the moment she saw him, an inexplicable glimmer of joy lit up her eyes.

But as if reminded of something, her expression suddenly sank, and she gave Ye Haochuan a lukewarm look.

What the hell? Was my guess right—did they really develop feelings?

Seeing Zhu Qingshuang’s indifference to him, Ye Haochuan’s heart tightened. Grabbing Zhu Tian’s sleeve, he asked seriously, ”Senior Brother Zhu, you’re not trying to steal my girl, are you?”

Zhu Tian burst into laughter at these words, ”What kind of nonsense is that? At my age, I don’t have the energy to think about such things!”

”If it’s not you, then could it be someone else?” Ye Haochuan wasn’t relieved at all; instead, he became even more suspicious of Zhu Qingshuang.

”Idiot! What are you thinking? Do you think I’m some kind of shallow woman?” Zhu Qingshuang’s face darkened as she snapped back. Then, as if suddenly changing her mind, she retorted, ”Actually, even if I did get involved with someone else, what does that have to do with you?”

What the hell? She flipped her stance faster than turning pages! Is she really that unpredictable?

Ye Haochuan vividly remembered how worried Zhu Qingshuang had been when he set out to lure away the Hellfire Cultivators. But after just a few days apart, why was she acting so cold now?

”My dear wife Qingshuang, after everything we’ve been through and with our bet as proof, you can’t ignore that, can you?”

”Who’s your wife? Just because we’ve been through storms together doesn’t mean we have to be together. Senior Brother Zhu has also faced life and death with you—are you going to marry him too?” Zhu Qingshuang shot back icily.

Oh, hell no! I wouldn’t dare have such thoughts!

Ye Haochuan glanced at the scruffy-bearded Zhu Tian and couldn’t help imagining some seriously unpleasant scenarios. That image—damn, it was painfully hard on the eyes!

”Why are you dragging me into you and your little lover’s quarrel?” Seeing the situation turning awkward, Zhu Tian quickly backed away, saying, ”Alright, you two chat—I’ll go ahead and pave the way for you!”

With that, he sped up and walked ahead.

Ye Haochuan couldn’t help but laugh. This was the mortal world, not the dangerous Sub-Thunder Element Dimension Realm; what was there to pave the way for?

With Zhu Tian tactfully stepping away, Ye Haochuan wasted no time. He casually put his arm around Zhu Qingshuang’s shoulder and teased, ”Haven’t seen you in a few days, and now you’ve gotten so sharp-tongued? If you keep this up, I might stop loving you!”

”Scoundrel! Who said I needed your love?” Zhu Qingshuang gave a furious shove to break free from Ye Haochuan’s arm and snapped, ”You’ve got so many other women—go find one of them to love you! I don’t have time for this!”

Damn, is she jealous?

Ye Haochuan instantly realized what was going on and grinned, ”I may have many close female friends, but you’re my one and only. My love for you is also one of a kind.”

”You shameless rogue—you must say the same thing to every woman, don’t you?”

Ye Haochuan’s guess was spot-on—Zhu Qingshuang was indeed jealous. But besides jealousy, she was also angry with Ye Haochuan for being such a player.

She had long known that Ye Haochuan had other women, but it hadn’t bothered her much at first. It wasn’t until Chen Yushan visited her a few days ago and the two chatted that she realized just how many women Ye Haochuan was involved with.

Zhu Qingshuang had spent the first half of her life detesting men partly because she hated their fickle nature. Now, knowing about the extent of Ye Haochuan’s playboy tendencies, how could she not be upset?

The more she thought about it, the more aggrieved she felt. The first man to open her heart, the first man she fell for—why couldn’t he be entirely devoted to her?

Seeing the tears welling up in Zhu Qingshuang’s eyes, Ye Haochuan also felt a pang of guilt in his heart.

Fine, if she can’t accept it, what’s the point in forcing it?

Thinking this, a shadow of sorrow crossed Ye Haochuan’s face. He stopped talking and quietly walked away.

All of a sudden, Zhu Qingshuang felt as though something vital in her heart had been pulled away. Seeing Ye Haochuan ignore her, she felt an inexplicable sense of loss.

”This jerk—doesn’t he know how to comfort someone?” Zhu Qingshuang muttered in her heart.

She was angry, yes, but hadn’t made up her mind about leaving Ye Haochuan. Deep down, she had already etched his shadow firmly into her soul.

As she helplessly watched Ye Haochuan’s retreating figure, she suddenly heard him speak, his voice full of melancholy.

”I haven’t thought too much about it. All I know is that I like you. I want you to be my woman so I can protect you for a lifetime. I feel the same toward them too! I may not be completely devoted, but I love each one deeply and sincerely!”

What a shameless jerk, so brazen about his infidelity—he actually believes he’s in the right?

Zhu Qingshuang cursed him in her heart indignantly. Yet, strangely, after hearing his words, the knot in her heart loosened considerably.

At least he truly likes me, doesn’t he?

With this thought, the unhappiness on Zhu Qingshuang’s face completely dissipated. She quickened her pace, silently walking half a step behind Ye Haochuan.

Seeing Zhu Qingshuang’s usual cheerful demeanor return, Ye Haochuan felt a sudden wave of delight.

Unexpectedly, his unintentional move of retreating to advance had worked wonders. Judging by Zhu Qingshuang’s demeanor, it wouldn’t be long until... heh-heh!

Just as Ye Haochuan indulged in an endless stream of fantasies, his phone suddenly vibrated with a message notification. Glancing at the screen, the few short words there made his brows knit tightly.

”Be careful, someone is tailing you!”
