[Gray’s POV]

After finishing our juice, I leaned back in my chair and let out a satisfied sigh.

The cold drink had washed away most of the fatigue from training.

”So...” I turned toward Amy. ”What are we going to do now? Do you have any plans?”

Amy rested her chin on one hand as she thought for a moment.

Then her eyes brightened.

”Let’s take it easy for a while.”

She smiled mischievously.

”After lunch, we can play on my new game console.”

”...Game console?”

The words immediately caught my attention.

For a brief moment, memories from my previous life surfaced.

Consoles.

Video games.

Countless hours people spent exploring virtual worlds.

I blinked in surprise.

”Wait...”

”We have something like that?”

Amy looked at me strangely.

”Of course we do.”

”I only got it recently.”

She stood up excitedly.

”I haven’t played it much yet.”

”So let’s learn together.”

My curiosity instantly replaced my exhaustion.

In my previous life, gaming technology had been fairly advanced.

But this world...

This world possessed mana technology.

Even though people couldn’t fully use it before awakening, the technology itself had developed in fascinating ways.

”I want to see it.”

Amy laughed.

”I thought you’d say that.”

”Come on.”

⸻

She led me toward the recreation room inside the mansion.

The moment we entered, I noticed a sleek device resting in the center of the room.

It wasn’t connected to a television like the consoles from my previous life.

Instead, a circular projector above it created a large floating holographic display.

”...That’s impressive.”

Amy folded her arms proudly.

”Right?”

”I knew you’d like it.”

She walked over and activated it.

The holographic screen flickered to life.

A long list of games appeared before us.

Strategy.

Puzzle.

Adventure.

Survival.

Simulation.

Combat.

There were dozens of options.

I slowly browsed through them.

Although the technology was different, the concepts felt surprisingly familiar.

Eventually, one title caught my eye.

A cooperative survival adventure.

Players explored ruins, gathered resources, crafted equipment, and fought monsters together.

I pointed toward it.

”Let’s try this one.”

Amy looked at it for a few seconds before nodding.

”Good choice.”

She selected it.

The screen shifted, asking us to create our characters.

I finished mine rather quickly.

A simple male avatar.

Black clothes.

A plain mask covering half my face.

Done.

Meanwhile...

Amy was still adjusting tiny details.

Hair.

Eyes.

Accessories.

Clothes.

Then she started changing colors.

Again.

And again.

I stared at her for nearly five minutes.

”...Amy.”

”Hm?”

”This is a survival game.”

She didn’t even look at me.

”I know.”

”Not a fashion contest.”

She finally turned toward me with complete seriousness.

”Presentation matters.”

I blinked.

”...We’re going to fight monsters.”

”And?”

She puffed out her chest proudly.

”If I’m saving the world, I’m going to look cute doing it.”

I could only sigh.

”I’ve underestimated your priorities.”

⸻

A few minutes later, we finally entered the game.

The world loaded around us.

A vast green forest stretched endlessly before us.

Ancient stone ruins peeked through the trees.

Birds flew overhead.

Wind rustled through the leaves.

The environment looked incredibly realistic.

”So...”

Amy stretched her virtual arms.

”What do we do first?”

I looked around.

”We should gather resources.”

She immediately nodded.

”Sounds reasonable.”

For the next several minutes, we explored together.

Neither of us really understood the controls, so we spent most of our time pressing random buttons and accidentally discovering new mechanics.

Eventually...

We became a little too competitive.

”I found iron!”

Amy proudly announced.

Before she could collect it...

I picked it up first.

”...Gray.”

I looked at her innocently.

”What?”

”Give it back.”

”I found it first.”

”You absolutely did not.”

”I absolutely did.”

She narrowed her eyes.

”You’re impossible.”

I grinned.

”It was on the ground.”

”Possession is nine-tenths of the law.”

Amy huffed.

”Fine.”

”I’ll find something better.”

⸻

A few minutes later...

”I found treasure!”

Amy happily opened a chest.

Before she could grab the reward...

I walked over.

”Thank you.”

”...Gray.”

I picked up everything.

She stared at me in disbelief.

”You...”

”...thief.”

I shrugged.

”You left it unattended.”

Amy immediately began chasing me through the forest.

”COME BACK HERE!”

”I’m going to hit you!”

”You can’t!”

”I have your sword!”

”You WHAT?!”

She somehow became even faster.

I burst into laughter while running away.

Unfortunately...

Neither of us noticed the enormous monster sleeping nearby.

Amy was too focused on chasing me.

I was too busy laughing.

The monster slowly opened one eye.

Then another.

...

We both stopped.

Very slowly...

We looked up.

The monster looked down.

”...Run.”

”RUN!”

We immediately sprinted in the opposite direction.

The monster roared and charged after us.

”What did you DO?!”

”I didn’t do anything!”

”You woke it up!”

”YOU were the one screaming!”

”I was screaming because YOU stole my loot!”

We barely escaped with our lives.

The moment we reached a safe zone...

We both collapsed onto the virtual ground.

Then...

Without warning...

We burst into laughter.

Neither of us could stop.

For several minutes, the only sound echoing through the room was our laughter.

⸻

Time passed without either of us noticing.

Eventually...

My stomach growled.

I looked toward the clock.

”...Already?”

Amy blinked.

”Oh.”

”It’s lunchtime.”

I removed the headset.

”We should stop here.”

She nodded.

”Yeah.”

”We can continue later.”

I smiled.

”Next time...”

”I’m definitely stealing your loot again.”

Amy pointed at me dramatically.

”I’ll remember that.”

”And next time...”

”I’m stealing everything before you even see it.”

⸻

We left the recreation room together and headed toward the dining hall.

Along the way, we continued arguing about who had cheated more inside the game.

”It wasn’t cheating.”

”It absolutely was.”

”You left the chest open.”

”You were waiting behind me!”

”I was being efficient.”

”You were being shameless!”

I couldn’t help laughing.

This was...

Fun.

Real fun.

Something I hadn’t experienced in a very long time.

⸻

By the time we reached the dining hall, Mother was already seated.

We greeted her before taking our usual seats.

She looked between the two of us.

”You both seem to be in a good mood.”

Amy immediately pointed at me.

”Gray stole all my loot.”

I pointed back.

”She chased me across the entire map.”

”Because you deserved it.”

Mother quietly listened to our argument.

After a few moments...

A small smile appeared on her face.

”...I see.”

”So you both enjoyed yourselves.”

Neither Amy nor I answered.

Instead...

We looked at each other.

Then...

Both of us nodded.

Mother’s smile became just a little warmer.

”I’m glad.”

⸻

Lunch was served shortly afterward.

The meal wasn’t extravagant.

Simply warm, delicious food prepared with care.

As we ate, Mother asked quietly,

”How was today’s training?”

I nodded.

”It was difficult.”

”But...”

”I think I’m beginning to understand the basics.”

”Every swing feels slightly better than the last.”

Mother looked pleased.

”Good.”

”Never rush your foundation.”

”The strongest buildings are built one brick at a time.”

I nodded seriously.

”I understand.”

She turned toward Amy.

”And you?”

Amy smiled confidently.

”I’ll continue training with Gray.”

”I still have plenty to improve.”

Mother nodded once.

”As long as neither of you pushes yourselves recklessly.”

”We won’t.”

The conversation gradually shifted to lighter topics.

Amy continued complaining about how I had ”stolen” her treasure.

I insisted everything had been legally acquired.

Mother simply listened while eating quietly.

Occasionally...

A faint smile would appear on her face.

The dining hall wasn’t noisy.

There were no grand conversations.

Just simple laughter.

Simple arguments.

Simple happiness.

Yet somehow...

Those ordinary moments felt more precious than anything else.

As I looked at Mother...

Then at Amy...

I couldn’t help smiling to myself.

This peaceful life...

This family...

No matter what happened in the future...

I would protect it.

No matter the cost.
