Warlock Apprentice

Chapter 1496: Section 1497 She Chapter 1496: Section 1497 She With Berenʼs narration, even more secrets were unveiled.

The so-called space of the undead, just as Angel had previously speculated, was actually another distinct space that exists within the cage.

This space overlapped with Gust Town, somewhat akin to the Inner World of the Fairy Tale World.

Within the space of the undead, not only were the mountains, wildlands, and forests of the cage replicated, but the houses and buildings of Gust Town were also exactly reproduced. However, there were no living humans in the space of the undead; its masters were the undead.

“All those she has killed are in the space of the undead. Itʼs a place where the living shall not enter, the true world of the undead!”

Having said this, Beren finally began to speak of the “she” he had been repeatedly mentioning.

Before talking about “her,” Beren once again brought up the memories that were not his own.

These memories not only told Beren his mission but also briefly mentioned some truths about the cage, as well as the person assisting him within it.

And this person, was “her.”

Beren did not mention her name, but continued to refer to her in the third person: “My mission was set from the very beginning, to kill you, Alex.”

“And her mission, was to eliminate those who knew the truth of the cage. Moreover, once you entered the cage, she was to transform this place into a battlefield.” Beren paused, “Those who tried to leave Gust Town were all killed by the undead under her control.”

“Memory tells me that she was supposed to assist me, but after careful observation, I found that she was more like a substitute, or perhaps a supervising officer.”

If one were to still use the metaphor of a stage play, although Beren and she served the same superior, they in fact played two different roles. Beren was responsible for killing Alex, while she was to assist Beren in his work.

How to assist? Essentially, by turning a tranquil script into a bizarre and bloody unfolding.

However, by now, it was clear that Beren had neglected his duty. He had not killed Alex and had even allowed him to stay.

This caused her plans for a terrifying conclusion to stumble midway, even though she was determined to push the script to a horrific ending.

“Because she didnʼt control the same authority, she couldnʼt overstep her bounds, so sheʼs had to endure all these years.” Beren said, “It was only after Lady Connie escaped the assassination attempt that she found an opportunity.”

As per her responsibilities, she was tasked with killing any escapee at all costs, to prevent the truth of the cage from being known to its inhabitants.

Originally, she could only kill those who came in contact with the truth. But due to Lady Connieʼs disappearance, she found a pretext to extend her reach into Gust Town, brazenly bringing the undead with her.

“Her actions are essentially an experiment. Within the rules that belong to her alone, how can she push this cage towards the world she desires to shape. The initial deaths of Anthony and Martin are actually her experiments. She attempted to actively make these two see the undead, then use the revelation of the truth to kill them.”

“The results proved her method successful.”

“Having tasted success, she began to kill indiscriminately. Her ultimate goal, to turn Gust Town into a domain of Ghost Phantoms, to transform all humans into the undead.”

Listening to this might be somewhat perplexing. The people living in Gust Town were obviously caged birds, all eventually destined to be killed by her. So why maintain the secrecy of the cageʼs truth from others, adhering to such an inexplicable rule? Berenʼs explanation was vague, merely saying it was established by the creator of the cage.

While the reason is incomprehensible, such acts of shrouding bloodshed with a veil of pretense are not uncommon in reality.

Beren continued, “The reason I say she is experimenting, is not just because sheʼs testing the limits of her own rules, but also probing mine.”

“Just as I understand her, she also knows me well. Sheʼs aware that without a special reason, I would not likely kill you.”

“Thus, she began by targeting what I most hoped to maintain–the ʼbalance.ʼ She disrupted the peaceful life of Gust Town, causing fear and panic, conjuring an uprising of the undead, turning this place into the realm of Ghost Phantoms, in order to force me to take action against you.”

“I thought this was her plan, but the recent event made me realize, sheʼs not just trying to force my hand; in fact, she would prefer to kill me. After killing me, even though she still couldnʼt overstep her boundaries, she would be entirely free of my constraints. Then, turning Gust Town into a battlefield would be just a matter of time.”

Of course, Alex certainly wouldnʼt escape either.

After Beren Lang finished speaking, Alex fell silent for a moment before asking, “Was it she who took away those peopleʼs limbs?”

Beren Lang nodded and whispered softly, “Only distorted life can nourish the new.”

A realization flickered in Alexʼs eyes, “I understand now, the truth is indeed somewhat surprising to me. However, when I realized that this world is a cage, I had already prepared for the worst.”

“Thank you,” Alex said, bending his body halfway in a gesture of respect toward Beren Lang.

His gratitude was not only for Beren Lang revealing the truth, but also for Beren Langʼs decision to give him refuge at the outset.

He remembered when he drifted into Gust Town on the tumultuous river currents, Beren Lang had been the first to find him. He was nearly drowning in the water when Beren Lang reached out a hand and pulled him ashore. Subsequently, Alex fell into unconsciousness and did not wake up until two days later.

Beren Langʼs mission had been to kill Alex. One could only imagine the degree of internal struggle Beren Lang faced during the two days Alex was unconscious.

If Alex had been in Beren Langʼs position, he might not have resisted the mission within his heart and would have killed himself on the spot, even though he knew that particular memory wasnʼt his.

But Alex had held firm, or perhaps it could be said that, at that moment, religious faith had overcome the impulse in his heart.

Alex had already been very grateful for Beren Lang saving his life, but now looking back, he realized that Beren Lang had not only saved him, the grace behind that act was even more profound.

After expressing his heartfelt thanks, Alex looked up and said, “If your hope is to maintain the balance of this cage, I will find a way to do it for you.”

Beren Lang had more to say but was interrupted when the Sheriff and the Viscountʼs Butler approached.

“The Viscount invites Father Beren Lang over,” the Butler said.

Beren Lang nodded, “I understand.”

The group walked out of the garden, with Beren Lang starting a conversation with Viscount Bega. Alex stood under the shade of a distant tree, looking back in the direction of Gust Town.

Although Gust Town seemed enshrouded by dark clouds, with everyone living in anxious dread, the balance hadnʼt collapsed completely thanks to Beren Langʼs efforts.

Since all Father Beren Lang wanted was such balance, even if it was false, Alex decided to give it a try as well.

“Do you plan to release Lady Connie?” Angel asked softly.

Alex shook his head, “Lady Connie is just an excuse; even if we forced a return to the previous balance, it would ultimately be a major risk.”

“Then how do you plan to maintain the balance?”

“Kill her,” Alex said without hesitation. “Only by killing her will everything come to an end.”

To kill her was a choice to eliminate future troubles. It wasnʼt hard to understand why Alex would make such a decision.

Angel didnʼt inquire how Alex planned to kill her but was more curious, “Do you know who she is?”

Beren Lang had not mentioned her name until now, and Angel still didnʼt understand who she was. However, from Alexʼs manner, it seemed he had already identified his target?

“Mr. Pat, do you know why the flowers in the cemetery always bloom so lavishly?” Although Alex was asking a question, he didnʼt allow Angel a chance to respond; he whispered the answer immediately after posing the question, “Because only a distorted life can nourish the most resplendent new beginnings.”

Angel still didnʼt understand what Alex was trying to convey.

At that moment, Alex suddenly said, “The iris flower, in the doctrine of the Heavenly Father, is a bloom that guides the undead into the Kingdom of Sky. Many iris flowers are planted in the garden of the Kruya Church. They are visible from the balcony of my room.”

“Donʼt you think, Mr. Pat, that those irises are extremely beautiful?”
