Chapter 1726: Chapter 592: Hands Up! (Double-Length)

Chen Shuangshuang bowed her head, silently sitting back beside her mother, her shoulders twitching as she wiped her tears.

Chen Yao walked straight up to Zhang Yan, looking down at her, ”I just contacted my brother. He’s currently in need of money for the dowry, banquet, and renovations. He really can’t spare any money.”

She paused, seemingly realizing her words were too cold, worried she might provoke the other person.

She added, ”Of course, we’re not ignoring you. Once my brother gets married smoothly, after this period, we’ll find a way to gather some money for you.

You’ve been working for nearly three years, surely you’ve saved a lot, so take it out first to cover the costs.

You should know, for your mother’s initial chemotherapy, the family has exhausted all savings, and even incurred considerable debt.”

Zhang Yan pressed her lips together, not responding to Chen Yao’s words.

She simply endured silently.

Her job had never been smooth, from the Imperial City to Yang City, constantly losing jobs due to various issues.

At this point, all her savings amounted to only seventeen thousand.

While the initial hospitalization costs for her mother required around thirty to forty thousand.

She stayed silent for a moment, taking out her phone from her pocket.

That’s when she saw two missed calls on the screen.

One was from Lulu, and the other... from Tang Song.

Because her phone’s vibration was weak and she was earlier distracted, she hadn’t noticed them at all.

Looking at the name ”Tang Song.”

Zhang Yan felt her heart being squeezed.

A surge of indescribable emotion instantly overwhelmed her.

Uncontrollable images flashed through her mind.

She was being driven forward by the tide of life, passively advancing.

At that moment, she felt most thankful for gathering the greatest courage of her life to write Tang Song a letter on Friday night.

Otherwise, she might never have had the chance in this lifetime.

Just then.

”Buzz buzz buzz—” Her phone suddenly vibrated again.

[Director-Bai Rui]

Zhang Yan immediately stood up and walked to a corner.

Taking a deep breath, she pressed the answer button.

”Zhang Yan, what’s going on?!” As soon as the call connected, Bai Rui’s voice, restrained with anger, came through, ”Today is Monday! You didn’t call to inform me about your leave, just didn’t show up at work. This is absenteeism, do you understand?!”

”I...” Zhang Yan’s voice was low, with a slight hoarseness, ”Brother Bai, I’m sorry. I’m at the hospital now; my mom is sick.”

Bai Rui’s voice paused for a moment, ”I don’t care if it’s true or not. I’m calling to notify you that since your mind is no longer on work, resign early. Hand over your work these two days and stop causing trouble here.”

Zhang Yan slightly tightened her grip on the phone, her breathing becoming somewhat rapid.

Shu Cheng Technology had been the company where she worked the longest since graduation, over a year now.

It was also her foundation for difficult survival in the unfamiliar city of Yang City.

Although she was mentally prepared, when the words ”resign” were casually spoken, she still felt an uncontrollable surge of panic and confusion.

She glanced back at her mother seated in the corner, someone who needed her support.

All her fears and hesitations were replaced by immense pressure.

Putting aside her pride and self-respect, she pleaded anxiously, ”Brother Bai... Could the company just lay me off? I... I just need the severance of one month’s salary.”

”Heh.” Bai Rui interrupted directly, ”So, you already found another job, didn’t you? Got an offer today? No wonder you dared to be so firm last Friday! Forget about the severance; it’s impossible.”

”I didn’t...” Zhang Yan tried to explain but ultimately gritted her teeth, abandoning useless arguments, her voice becoming resolute, ”Brother Bai, then the company owes me three months’ performance bonuses and previous travel expenses, it must be fully paid when I leave.”

Bai Rui paused briefly, his tone becoming extremely dismissive, ”This... we’ll discuss it later. The company’s finances are under review and cannot be approved for now. Not just you, everyone’s performance bonuses haven’t been issued. You can start the resignation process first.”

”No, you must give me the money.” Zhang Yan’s tone was more serious than ever.

The last three months she worked overtime, writing two blockbuster articles, plus other scattered achievements, her bonus on the assessment sheet should be over ten thousand.

Plus the travel expenses previously held back, totaling nearly twenty thousand.

Although the company indeed had problems recently and the money hadn’t been paid, it was rightfully hers.

Once she secured this money, her mother’s initial hospitalization deposit and preliminary examination costs would be covered.

For someone deeply mired, aimless, currently, it wasn’t just money.

It was also the only hope she could grasp.

Bai Rui seemed to be angered by her firm stance and shouted loudly, ”Zhang Yan, what kind of attitude is this?! I didn’t say I wouldn’t give it to you, just said it would be delayed for a while!”

”Then I’ll apply for labor arbitration!”

”Fine!” Bai Rui laughed out of anger, ”Go ahead then! I’ll be waiting!”

The call was abruptly hung up.

Listening to the busy signal ”beep beep beep” in the receiver, Zhang Yan’s arm holding the phone hung weakly.

Her mind was blank, yet filled with many thoughts.
