Beating Instances through Words Left by the Dead

Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Russian Roulette

The accusation against Ginton for cheating threw the recreation room into chaos. Before the other patients, armed with chairs and tables, could surround Ginton, Wu Chang slipped out of the room ahead of time.

As he left, he didn’t forget to make a gesture of blessing.

Hope nothing bad happens to him.

Julie escorted him back to his room. She stood at the doorway, pulling out a bunch of keys from her waist and began to select them.

”For safety’s sake, you shouldn’t go out today. I’ll bring you lunch and dinner.”

During the moment Julie was selecting the keys, Wu Chang noticed that two keys, one black and one red, were strapped to the inside of the slit in Julie’s nurse uniform.

Seeing no one else around, Wu Chang took off his shirt, revealing his well-built physique that earned full marks from Julie. Seizing the moment when Julie’s gaze was drawn to him, he pressed her against the door and brushed his hand up her thigh, approaching the two keys from below.

”How about staying a bit longer?”

Julie grabbed his hand on her thigh, her strong grip making it impossible for him to move further up.

”You can’t touch those. In this sanatorium, the basement and the fourth floor are off-limits to patients. Approaching them without permission is a serious violation.”

Wu Chang raised an eyebrow, his palm, which was held in place, slightly squeezing.

”If I can’t touch those, does that mean I can touch here?”

Julie leaned in close to Wu Chang and whispered, ”That depends on your performance.”

Watching Julie’s departing figure, Wu Chang raised an eyebrow.

He had made the right bet. This woman was indeed on his side.

Without Julie’s shelter, Ginton would definitely not have let him leave the recreation room easily.

The uniform of medical personnel was more useful than he imagined. With such a convenient guardian deity, no matter what misunderstandings she had about his identity, such misunderstandings had to continue.

After seeing Julie off, Wu Chang immediately checked the spoils from the Blood-Colored Will.

Player Nickname: Doesn’t Eat Beef.

Player Level: 1 (0/100)

Life: 8 (5)

Power: 9 (5)

Agility: 9 (5)

Endurance: 7 (5)

Energy: 0 (0)

Inspiration: 52 (5)

Will: 31 (5)

(The numbers in parentheses are the average attributes for an adult male aged 20-40.)

Skills: Mamba Iron Elbow, Firearms Use (Proficient).

Item: Silver Dawn, Favor of the Goddess of Fortune.

Talent: Exorcism.

Compared to the previous attribute panel, after completing the Gambler’s Blood-Colored Will, his Agility and Will each increased by one, and his Inspiration increased by two.

Four attribute points don’t seem like much, but according to the game panel’s prompts, you only get five free attribute points per level up.

The attribute reward from completing a Blood-Colored Will is nearly equivalent to leveling up, making the benefits quite substantial.

Moreover, besides the attribute rewards, he also acquired a new game item.

He opened his personal space and took out three 24-sided dice, each engraved with numbers from 1 to 24.

”Item Name: Favor of the Goddess of Fortune.”

”Artifact Level: D.”

”Item Skill: Strong Luck.”

”Throw three dice. If they all land on 1, you gain the Strong Luck status, improving the success rate of the next luck-related choice. The enhancement depends on the Inspiration value.”

”Item Skill: Lead-Filled Dice.”

”The Goddess of Fortune gives extra care to those under her favor, filling the dice with a little lead, ensuring they roll a 1 when activated. This skill can be activated once per instance plane.”

Well, seems like the Goddess of Fortune is cheating too.

He earned four attribute points and a D-Level item for completing the Gambler’s Blood-Colored Will. Even though he didn’t know the market in the Abyssal Game, he could guess that the reward’s value was phenomenal.

No wonder the skill description for his talent speculated that he was cheating.

What, the Goddess of Fortune fills dice with lead, and he’s not allowed a little helper plugin?

Alone in the room, time felt especially slow. With no computer or phone, to pass the time, he began rolling the three dice he had just obtained.

The Strong Luck skill doesn’t have usage limits or cooldown periods—it’s purely about luck. If he managed to roll three 1s, he’d save the activation of Lead-Filled Dice.

Can’t manage it even once in a day?

Two hours later, Wu Chang lay dejectedly on the bed, muttering softly:

”Right, the probability of rolling three 1s on a 24-sided die is less than one in ten thousand. A 1.6% chance and you still need to hit the guaranteed bottom line, as if every waking moment is low blood sugar, so stop daydreaming.”

As time passed, night quickly fell, and the nurses shook their bells, heralding the evening’s arrival.

Wu Chang got off the bed and lit the oil lamp on the table.

By the lamp’s light, he once again took out the three dice and activated the Lead-Filled Dice.

Three dice were tossed out, and after a brief spin, they stopped simultaneously, neatly showing three ones.

Cheating really works.

He put away the dice, moved the table to the center of the room, and sat on one side.

After an unknown amount of time, just as he was about to fall asleep, footsteps sounded in the quiet corridor.

As the footsteps approached, estimating the time was right, he prepared to get up and open the door, only to find the door, locked from the inside, had opened by itself.

Kinton pushed the door open and entered, sat across from him, and smiled, saying: ”Encountered a little trouble, got delayed for a bit.”

Judging by Kinton’s state, the trouble he encountered wasn’t little.

The nurses of Moonlight Sanatorium were each unusually fierce, and the patients they guarded were, of course, not trouble-free either.

Kinton’s hospital gown was stained almost entirely with blood, and he had at least dozens of wounds on him — cuts, blunt force injuries, burns, everything.

Apart from these minor wounds, his round head had acquired a deep dent since yesterday, likely caused by a heavy blow with a blunt weapon.

A square table leg was stabbed into his abdomen, not yet removed, and still bleeding.

The reason it hadn’t been pulled out was probably because it’s not convenient to bandage with one hand, as his left arm had been forcibly torn off below the shoulder.

If Kinton were to lie down and play dead now, forensic experts would need a few days just to judge which wound was fatal.

Yet another heavily injured person.

Wu Chang tried hard to keep his lips from curling, and asked with a concerned tone, ”Brother Kinton, is your body okay, do you need to seek treatment first?”

Kinton grinned widely, showing blood-stained white teeth.

”Just some minor wounds, don’t mind them. Brother Sean, what do you want to gamble with me?”

Wu Chang pretended to reach below the pillow, pulled out Silver Dawn from his personal space, and placed it on the table.

”Brother Kinton, do you recognize this?”

Kinton caressed Silver Dawn with his remaining right hand, and marveled: ”Such a delicate flintlock gun!”

Wu Chang raised an eyebrow, realizing the technological progress of this dungeon plane included firearms, saving him much explanation.

”Brother Kinton, have you seen guns before?”

Kinton said: ”I used them during service before. I can guarantee, the flintlock guns used by royalty and great nobles don’t compare to this! Are you planning to use it as a stake? I’m afraid I can’t offer matching stakes.”

Wu Chang shook his head, and explained:

”No, it’s an apparatus for the gambling game, not the stake. Where I come from, there’s a traditional gambling game called Russian Roulette.”

Kinton showed curiosity, ”What does it mean?”

Wu Chang briefly demonstrated the firing principle of a revolver, opened the bullet chamber, placed a bullet inside, spun it, and closed the chamber.

”The rules are simple, six chambers, at this moment only one chamber has a bullet. You and I take turns aiming the gun at our heads and pulling the trigger. Whoever gets shot loses.”

He looked at the deep crimson resentment behind Kinton, ”If I lose, this gun is yours. If you lose, I want the key to that white door in the underground area.”

Such simple and brutal rules fit Kinton’s taste perfectly, he licked his lips and said:

”No problem, the key you want is in my room. If you win, you can fetch it yourself. But I have one condition, the spinning of the cylinder and the first shot must be done by me.”

”Alright.” Wu Chang agreed readily.

Kinton slapped a piece of paper on the table, dipped his thumb into his wound to collect blood, pressed a thumbprint on it, and then pushed it towards Wu Chang.

”To prevent reneging after losing, we need to sign an agreement before starting, okay?”

The paper only had a simple sentence.

”Winner takes all, loser takes none.”

Wu Chang had seen this agreement in the resentment. It possessed a certain coercive power, once signed, the loser would die instantly, even a player couldn’t resist.

The power of the agreement came from the huge crescent moon occupying half of the paper, its outline composed of countless intricate curves, exquisite and magnificent, seemingly representing some powerful existence.

Wu Chang cut his thumb with a dagger, and pressed down a fingerprint.

”Of course, no problem. If you’re still worried, I can even pinky swear with you.”

Kinton said: ”Hope you’ll remain optimistic afterward.”

Kinton picked up the gun, carefully checked the bullet chamber, confirmed no abnormalities, spun the chamber single-handedly, inserted the bullet into the spinning chamber, and closed the cylinder.

He pressed the muzzle against his forehead, the smile on his face growing brighter.

This gambling game called Russian Roulette seemed random, but for a top-level gambler like him, controlling which chamber the bullet appears in based on sight and technique couldn’t be easier.

Random? Not random at all!

He took the first shot, so Wu Chang would take the final shot.

He seemed to already see the final result of the game, five consecutive empty shots later, Wu Chang trembling while holding the gun, unable to pull the trigger that was destined to pierce through his skull.

The despair of pushing oneself into the abyss by one’s own hands would make Wu Chang terrified, struggle, go mad, beg...

Finally lose the game by forfeiting, only to be pinched to death like a bug by him.

Watching an opponent at the gambling table step by step towards the cliff is never tiresome, this pleasure is enough to overshadow the physical pain he’s enduring.

”Let the games begin!” Kinton exclaimed excitedly, his finger pulling the trigger.

As Kinton pulled the trigger, Wu Chang picked up a pre-prepared wooden board to block the spraying liquid.

Lowering the wooden board, Wu Chang picked up Silver Dawn expressionlessly, and wiped off the bloodstains on it.

The setting of silver bullets being ready to load at any time was very convenient indeed.
