The other side of Reincarnation

The leadership circle gathered within the hour, same table, same faces, though the mood settled considerably heavier once I’d laid out everything Ivy had found.

”Belial,” Enzo repeated, something dark crossing his usually composed features. ”That explains a great deal. He was always the most ambitious of the six, even by demon lord standards.”

　”You know him?” I asked.

”Not personally,” Enzo said. ”By reputation. An elf, once, before whatever broke him turned him into something else entirely. Greed given shape, more or less. He’s never been satisfied with what he already holds.”

An elf. That’s — that’s a strange, unsettling detail to sit with, given everything Elaine’s own people have taught me about their race.

”We need to tell Nyxara,” Eris said, practical as ever. ”She made a direct claim over Kai at that meeting. If Belial’s been actively working around that claim, she deserves to know her own authority’s being tested.”

”Agreed,” I said. ”Though I want to be careful how we handle her reaction, whatever it turns out to be.”

I didn’t have to wait long to find out.

Nyxara arrived within the hour of my sending word — no fog-gate, no ceremony, simply present, the same way she always was, except this time her usual easy warmth had gone somewhere considerably colder.

”Tell me everything,” she said, no preamble at all.

I laid it out the same way Ivy had given it to me — the assassins, the poisoned shipment, the trail leading through Myrath’s manipulated faction straight back to Belial’s own directed funding.

Nyxara listened in total, unnerving silence, and by the time I’d finished, the air around her had thickened into something that made even Enzo, Elder Dragon or not, visibly tense beside me.

”He heard my warning,” she said, quiet, each word landing with the specific weight of something that had already decided its own conclusion. ”He sat at that table. He agreed, same as the rest of them. And he did this anyway.”

This is the fury Ignivar warned me about, back before he had a name of his own. I understand now why even ten of him wouldn’t stand a chance against her.

”I’m going to kill him,” she said, simple, absolute, already turning as though the decision required nothing further than the saying of it.

”Wait,” Ivy said, stepping forward, careful but firm despite the obvious risk of interrupting someone in Nyxara’s current state. ”You can’t. Not directly.”

Nyxara turned, something dangerous flickering behind her otherwise calm expression.

　”Explain.”

”Demon Lords cannot engage each other in direct combat,” Ivy said, steady despite the pressure clearly bearing down on her. ”Not without explicit sanction from Vaelith specifically. It’s one of the few rules that actually binds all six of you equally. You know this.”

Right. The rule from the Hollow Table. No fighting between demon lords without Vaelith’s permission.

Nyxara’s jaw tightened, the reality of the restriction clearly warring against everything her fury wanted to do instead.

”Then I’ll go to Vaelith,” she said, finally. ”Get his sanction. This is exactly the kind of violation that rule exists to address.”

”Wait,” I said, before she could actually leave. ”Let me handle it instead.”

She turned to me, disbelief clear on her features.

”You want to face Belial yourself? He’s a Demon Lord, Kai. Whatever growth you’ve managed, whatever Enzo’s taught you, you are not remotely ready for that fight.”

”Maybe not,” I admitted. ”But I’m not bound by the same rule you are. I’m not a Demon Lord. There’s no restriction on me facing him directly.”

That’s actually true, and actually useful, for once, that I don’t fit neatly into any of this world’s established categories.

”And if you lose,” Nyxara said, quiet, something almost protective underneath the question. ”If he actually manages to do what he’s apparently been trying to arrange this whole time — weaken you, isolate you, absorb whatever you actually are?”

”Then that’s a risk I’m choosing to take,” I said. ”Rather than watch you break your own rule and start a war between demon lords that has nothing to do with the actual problem.”

She studied me a long while, something complicated behind her expression — frustration, genuine concern, and underneath it, something that looked almost like respect.

　”You’re stubborn,” she said, finally.

　”I’ve been told,” I said.

”Fine,” she said, though the word came out reluctant, weighted with clear unease. ”I won’t fight him myself. But I’m not letting you walk into his domain alone either. I’ll accompany you. Watch. Intervene only if it becomes genuinely necessary.”

That’s more concession than I expected, honestly, given how thoroughly this decision seemed to go against everything she wanted to do a few minutes ago.

Enzo stepped forward next, something firm and settled in his own posture.

”Let me go in your place, then. Or alongside you, at minimum. I’ve faced Demon Lord-adjacent threats before, in my old life. My experience could matter.”

”No,” I said, gentle but firm. ”I need you here.”

　”Kai—”

”Myrath’s still out there,” I said. ”Manipulated or not, their military faction is still a genuine threat, and they deal in explosive magic specifically — the kind of warfare Horizoncrest’s current defenses aren’t fully built to counter. If Belial’s actually planning something coordinated, distracting me on one front while Myrath strikes on another, I need someone here capable of handling that specific threat.”

Enzo considered that, clearly torn, before finally nodding, accepting the logic even through obvious reluctance.

”I’ll hold Horizoncrest,” he said. ”Whatever comes from Myrath’s direction, it won’t get past me.”

”Ivy,” I said, turning to her next. ”Ace. You’re with me.”

”Understood, Ivy said, immediate, no hesitation at all.

Good, Ace added, through the link. I was going to insist regardless.

”Eris,” I said, last, the hardest conversation of the group. ”I need you here too. Same reasoning as Enzo. If something happens on two fronts at once, Horizoncrest needs its best fighters properly split between them.”

She didn’t argue, though I could see how much the concession actually cost her.

”Come back,” she said, simple, echoing words she’d given me once before, on a night that already felt like a lifetime ago.

”I intend to,” I said, meaning it fully.

Alright. Belial made his choice, hiding behind other people’s desperation instead of coming himself.

Time to make sure that choice actually costs him something.
