The other side of Reincarnation

Something had shifted in Kai’s own mind during that week inside the cocoon.

　Quiet.

　But unmistakable.

Pieces of his old life he’d genuinely believed lost forever had resurfaced—whole and clear, as though the evolution itself had simply reached back and returned what had always technically still been there.

Trading models. Supply chains. Production theory I hadn’t thought about since before I died as Haruto.

He sat with it for a full morning before mentioning it to anyone, turning the possibilities over with the same quiet focus he’d once brought to studying market patterns, back in a life that felt, most days now, like it belonged to someone else entirely.

I’ve spent this whole time thinking about survival, about protection, about grief.

I haven’t once properly thought about what Horizoncrest could actually become, economically, if I applied everything I actually know.

He gathered Elaine and Ivy first, laying out the shape of an idea that had been quietly assembling itself since the moment he’d woken.

”I want to completely restructure how we approach production,” he told them. ”Not just meeting our own needs. Building something the rest of the world genuinely can’t get anywhere else.”

Elaine studied him with careful interest.

　”Go on.”

”Construction materials, first,” Kai said. ”Dragonsteel—forged with actual True Dragon energy, considerably more durable than anything conventional. Voidstone, for absorbing magical energy in defensive walls. Astral Crystal, for storing mana at scale. Anti-Mana Ore—rare enough that most kingdoms have probably never even encountered a sample. Worldwood, that regenerates and survives for millennia. Celestial Glass. Genesis Stone, for accelerating repairs on damaged structures.”

”You want to sell all of this?” Ivy asked, already calculating the implications.

　”Selectively,” Kai said. ”Carefully.”

　His expression hardened slightly.

”There’s a rule I want established from the start—anything capable of threatening an entire kingdom on its own never reaches the open market. I’m not interested in flooding the world with weapons that could level cities. I’m interested in becoming valuable enough that peace is simply the more profitable choice.”

By the time he’d finished laying out the full scope, Elaine’s expression had shifted into something genuinely excited.

Weapons and military supplies, carefully graded to avoid arming anyone with world-ending capability.

Potions and medicines, including things like curse-removal treatments and soul-recovery elixirs that simply didn’t exist anywhere else.

Agricultural supplies capable of transforming barren farmland.

Magical luxury goods nobles would kill for.

Transportation and communication solutions that could bind allied kingdoms together through proper infrastructure rather than mere treaty.

”And services too,” Kai added. ”Reconstruction. Curse removal. Dungeon clearing. Emergency disaster relief. Things kingdoms need but can’t produce themselves, regardless of how wealthy they are.”

”You want to become indispensable,” Ivy said, slow understanding settling into place.

”I want peace to be the obviously correct choice,” Kai said. ”Not because anyone’s afraid of us. Because working with us is simply better than working against us.”

He designated seven products as entirely exclusive to Horizoncrest.

　Genesis Crystal.

　Voidstone.

　Dragonsteel.

　Genesis Seeds.

　Soul Elixir.

　Spatial Rings.

　And World Tree Sap.

Each valuable enough to draw serious interest.

None individually catastrophic in the wrong hands.

”This works,” Elaine said, already sketching implementation plans with visible enthusiasm. ”This works considerably better than I expected, honestly.”

It should.

I spent years of my old life doing exactly this kind of thinking, even if it was numbers on a screen instead of magic ore in the ground.

　Production began almost immediately.

Borga’s dwarves turned their considerable craft toward Dragonsteel forging.

Elaine’s Authority of Genesis proved unexpectedly suited to potion refinement.

Vance contributed scholarly precision to the more delicate magical items.

Within weeks, word had already started spreading.

　Merchants.

　Then nobles.

　Then entire kingdoms.

All suddenly, urgently interested in whatever Horizoncrest was now producing.

Not everyone reacted with the same enthusiasm, though.

Kai understood quickly that becoming valuable didn’t automatically make him trusted.

A kingdom built on human supremacy refused outright to sign any trade agreement, their own king declaring publicly:

”A Demon Lord wearing the face of civilization is still a Demon Lord.”

A holy kingdom—devout and suspicious of anything demon-adjacent by doctrine alone—spread quieter propaganda, warning that ”every gift has a price,” even while privately and carefully watching Horizoncrest’s growth with obvious unease.

A rival economic power grew hostile for reasons that had nothing to do with Kai’s own nature at all.

Simple, ordinary fear that their own merchants would lose everything the moment Horizoncrest’s goods reached the wider market.

　And Teorema—

The ancient kingdom whose hero, Valt Horax, had spent his entire life hunting Demon Lords.

A kingdom convinced beyond argument that peace and Demon Lords could never coexist.

They treated Kai’s very existence as confirmation of a threat they’d fought for generations.

”We’ve heard that promise before,” their own reports apparently said whenever Kai’s supposed harmlessness came up.

Kai found himself, more than once, simply stating the truth plainly rather than trying to argue his way past that kind of entrenched suspicion.

”I never asked you to trust me,” he told one particularly hostile envoy, quiet and unbothered. ”Judge me by what I actually do, not by the race you’ve already decided I belong to.”

The room went silent every time he said some version of that.

It never fully won anyone over immediately.

　But it planted something.

A seed of doubt in whatever certainty they’d arrived with.

And over time, doubt had a way of eventually becoming reconsideration.

I don’t need the world to believe I’m human.

I don’t need them to believe I’m some misunderstood monster either.

I’m just Kai.

Demon Lord.

Neither human nor monster.

As long as nobody threatens my people, none of us have any reason to be enemies.

　Slowly.

　Unevenly.

That message began working its way outward.

Merchants spoke well of Horizoncrest’s fair dealing.

Travelers reported genuine safety passing through its territory.

Kingdoms gradually noticed that Kai never invaded anyone.

　Never demanded worship.

Punished his own people harshly for harming outsiders.

And gave freely during famines, even to kingdoms that hadn’t earned it.

”He may be a Demon Lord,” the reports eventually started saying, ”but he has never treated us as enemies.”

Then one invitation arrived that genuinely surprised him.

Queen Mirabel Aurelith of the Tearmoon Kingdom had requested a formal, mutually beneficial friendship.

Something about a specific product had caught her particular attention.

Interesting.

A queen, reaching out directly rather than sending a cautious envoy first.

　He accepted.

Meanwhile, in Roshan, the widow found herself increasingly shorthanded as demand for Horizoncrest’s new goods climbed.

Enough that Kai sent word requesting she spare a few staff members to help Elaine directly with the growing calculations.

Two of her people were selected.

　One of them—

Without either of them fully knowing it yet—

　Was his own sister.
