The other side of Reincarnation

In Roshan, the widow’s shop had grown busier than it had ever been — Horizoncrest’s new production lines demanding more hands than her existing staff could properly manage, and Himari and Yuki had settled into the work with quiet, steady competence over the preceding weeks.

”It seems Lord Kai’s in need of more hands,” the widow said, reviewing a fresh shipment order with obvious satisfaction.

”Who’s Lord Kai?” Himari asked, genuinely curious.

　Yuki glanced over, surprised.

”Since when have you not been hearing that name? It’s all anyone talks about lately.”

One of the other staff members, overhearing, looked equally baffled.

”You don’t know who Lord Kai is?”

”No,” Himari admitted. ”We don’t.”

”He’s the one who saved us,” the staff member said. ”That night we were all locked in those cells. You don’t remember?”

”Oh,” Yuki said, something clicking into place. ”You mean that kid.”

”I don’t think you should be calling him a kid,” the widow said, mild but pointed.

Her own daughter, passing through with a delivery, added,

”He’s the head of the Kobayashi family.”

Himari went very still at that.

Kobayashi. That’s — that’s my name. My family’s name. Are there others from home, here in this world?

”Wait,” Yuki said, working through her own memory. ”Wasn’t he the one who destroyed an entire kingdom?”

　One of the staff laughed.

”No, that wasn’t him. That was another member of the family — Enzo, an Elder Dragon.”

”Wait, there are dragons in this world?” Yuki asked, genuinely startled.

”Of course,” the widow’s daughter said. ”Extremely powerful. We’re fortunate one’s actually part of the Kobayashi family.”

”Why fortunate?” Himari asked.

”Because anyone under the Kobayashi family’s protection is genuinely protected,” the girl said. ”The whole family looks out for its own.”

”So you’re telling me all of Roshan is under this family’s protection?” Yuki asked.

”Not technically all of it,” the widow clarified. ”Just everyone connected to the Horizoncrest trade business. Which, admittedly, is becoming most of us.”

”Himari,” the widow said, turning to her directly, ”you’ll be heading to Horizoncrest to assist Lord Kai’s people. They need someone with your calculation skills.”

”Understood,” Himari said, careful to keep her voice steady, even as something quiet and hopeful stirred beneath the surface.

Maybe this is my chance to finally learn more about this family. About this Kai, specifically.

”Oh, one more thing,” the widow added, almost as an afterthought. ”Lord Kai recently became a Demon Lord. Try not to embarrass yourself in front of him.”

　Himari blinked.

”I’m sorry — what?”

Back at Horizoncrest, Kai had already thrown himself fully into the next major project — one considerably more ambitious than anything he’d attempted so far.

”Genesis Energy isn’t ordinary mana,” he explained to a small gathered group, Elaine and Null-Subconsciousness both present. ”It’s the energy of creation itself — restoration, growth, reconstruction. Elaine’s Authority of Genesis gives her the natural ability to manipulate that fundamental principle. But there’s a distinction worth understanding properly: Elaine creates Genesis Energy. What I’m building is the technology that makes it usable at scale.”

He laid out the five-stage process carefully, the same patient documentation style he’d brought to every product line before this one.

”Stage one — Mana Collection. Massive Astral Mana Collectors gather ambient mana from the environment, storing it inside enormous Astral Crystals.”

”Stage two — Purification. The collected mana passes through layered formations of Astral Crystal, Worldwood, and Celestial Glass, stripping out elemental impurities until what remains is Pure Null Mana.”

”Stage three — the crucial one. Genesis Conversion. Elaine activates Authority of Genesis and imposes a single command: let this energy become the power of creation. The Pure Null Mana’s fundamental properties rewrite themselves entirely, becoming genuine Genesis Energy.”

”Stage four — Stabilization. Raw Genesis Energy is dangerously unstable on its own, so it circulates through a chamber combining Genesis Stone, Astral Crystal, and a Worldwood core — each material stabilizing a different aspect. The crystal stores it. The Worldwood gives it structure. The Genesis Stone preserves its creative property.”

”Stage five — Storage. The finished energy is held inside what I’m calling Genesis Cores. These become the actual energy source for everything we’re building going forward.”

”There’s an important limitation, though,” Kai continued. ”The first generation of Genesis Cores requires Elaine’s own Authority of Genesis directly. That makes her genuinely irreplaceable for the highest-quality output. But I’m also developing Genesis Conversion Engines — machines that can reproduce the conversion process automatically, using a small quantity of already-stabilized Genesis Energy as a catalyst. So if Elaine’s ever unavailable, production continues, just at a reduced scale. Origin-quality Genesis Energy stays hers alone.”

”You built in redundancy,” Elaine said, something warm in the observation. ”So the whole system doesn’t collapse if I’m not here.”

”You matter too much to this place for me to build anything that depends entirely on you being present every single day,” Kai said, simple.

With the theory settled and production already beginning, Kai turned to the next practical matter — space. Horizoncrest’s growth had outpaced its usable land considerably, and there was really only one place left to look.

Time to actually open that dimensional barrier properly.

He walked toward it that same afternoon, Vance, Enzo, and Ace accompanying him, the rest of the household occupied with their own ongoing work.

Standing before the barrier, Null-Subconsciousness released two percent of his Null mana, granting access to the mechanism itself — spellwork appearing before him like an elaborate lock sequence, ancient and dense.

”Will you be able to crack this?” Kai asked.

”Alright,” Kai said. ”Go ahead.”

His eyes bled red, and Null-Subconsciousness took over entirely, working the spell apart piece by piece, rearranging its complex structure with a precision that made Vance’s own scholarly eyes widen in open, delighted amazement.

It took roughly ten minutes to disable the barrier fully. Kai’s consciousness returned the moment it finished — the barrier still standing, but no longer sealed. Anything could move freely through it now, in either direction.

　Everywhere went suddenly, dangerously still.
