The other side of Reincarnation

The letter arrived three days after the Chaos Dragon’s heartbeat first rippled across the world, carried by a formal envoy from the Dynasty of Eternal Verdance.

Kai read it standing outside the underground facility, Himari beside him.

Elaria Sylvarenne. Personally written.

She’d heard of Horizoncrest’s destruction. She’d learned, too, that a significant number of elves had died in the attack—and buried within that report was a detail that had clearly shaken her considerably: the elf elder who’d died had once been her own son, estranged from the Elven Empire for reasons the letter didn’t elaborate on.

　She offered an alliance.

The reasoning was plain and pragmatic—the Elven Empire sat in the west, Horizoncrest in the south, Ashford, Myrath, and Roshan all within reach of whatever Shimizu intended next. Demon Lord territories clustered nearby too.

If Shimizu took the west, everything Kai had spent years building, and everything considerably older than him besides, fell with it.

She’s not wrong. This was never going to stay contained to just me.

What the letter didn’t say—what Kai only pieced together properly later, through Vados and Senna’s own careful intelligence gathering—was the true shape of Nao Shimizu’s motives.

　She hadn’t been controlled.

Jiro’s Domination had pushed her toward action, certainly, but Greed had found no purchase on her at all, because Nao didn’t consider herself greedy.

In her own mind, the western territories already belonged to Shimizu by right—she simply hadn’t moved yet, patient, wary of the powerful demons scattered across the region and the old, unconfirmed rumors of a Dragon of the West still watching from somewhere unseen.

Her alliance with Vorath and Skorne had changed that calculation entirely.

Now she had the military weight to actually act on ambitions she’d carried, unhurried, for considerably longer than anyone realized.

Jiro didn’t create this, Kai thought, turning it over. He just found a button that was already wired to something she already wanted.

That makes her considerably more dangerous than a puppet ever could have been.

Kai accepted Elaria’s proposed non-aggression arrangement without hesitation, extending it to the Dwarven Kingdom the same day.

The western nations, for the first time in living memory, found themselves united by simple, practical necessity rather than shared trust.

The council convened the following day at the Dynasty of Eternal Verdance’s own hall.

Kai brought Chloe and Seli. Himari stayed behind to watch over his mother.

He arrived to find representatives from the Elven Empire, Ashford, Myrath, the Dwarven Kingdom, and Fiorano already gathered, every one of them waiting on him specifically.

Elaria opened the meeting with something Kai hadn’t expected—a personal apology, offered without hesitation.

”For Horizoncrest,” she said, ”and for everything it cost you. I should have reached out sooner.”

She laid out the report plainly: Shimizu’s forces had attacked Horizoncrest under the pretense of retrieving weapons they claimed already belonged to them, and were now openly preparing to expand into the west entirely.

”These weapons,” Elaria asked, turning to Kai directly. ”Were they genuinely Shimizu’s? How dangerous are they, actually?”

”I don’t know their full destructive potential,” Kai admitted. ”I never tested them properly. Elaine specifically kept me from demonstrating or displaying them at all—she was worried it would make other kingdoms assume I was preparing an invasion of my own.”

”Elaine,” Elaria said. ”Tell me about her.”

”An elf,” Kai said. ”She managed Horizoncrest’s trade and business. She died in the attack.”

　The room went entirely silent.

”Who else did you lose?” Elaria asked, quieter now.

”Eris. Elaine. The elf elder and his family—his wife, his daughter.”

　Elaria went very still.

”His name,” she said carefully. ”What was it?”

　Kai told her.

Elaria’s composure cracked, just slightly, grief flooding in beneath her royal bearing.

”That was my son,” she said quietly. ”He left the Empire many years ago. I hadn’t seen him since.”

　A pause.

”I’m sorry, Kai. For your loss, and for having no idea it was also mine.”

The weight of the room settled entirely differently after that—grief shared, rather than merely reported.

”Do you intend to join this war against Shimizu?” Elaria asked, once the silence had properly passed.

”Not the way you’re thinking,” Kai said. ”I’m not interested in fighting their armies. My targets are Vorath, Skorne, and Nao Shimizu herself.”

The council erupted immediately—disbelief, alarm, several voices questioning whether facing two True Dragons and an empress simultaneously was even survivable.

　Elaria cut through it cleanly.

”If Kai’s fighting those three specifically, then his interests are already aligned with ours entirely. Let him handle them. Our combined forces handle the armies invading from the east and north.”

　Kai accepted.

Before the plan could properly settle, thought communication from Vados cut through everything.

They’re moving. Both fronts. Now.

Almost simultaneously, soldiers burst into the council hall, confirming the same—Shimizu’s eastern and northern forces had begun their advance.

　Elaria was already moving, decisive.

”Mobilize everything. Every ruler present, every allied force—we defend now.”

　Agreement came instantly, unanimous.

She turned to address Kai directly.

　He was already gone.
